By DAVE CARPENTER, AP Business Writer

CHICAGO (AP) -- Tribune Co. said it plans to sell the Chicago Cubs at the end of the 2007 baseball season, putting one of its most valuable assets on the block as it simultaneously announced Monday that real estate magnate Sam Zell was acquiring the media conglomerate.

Step right up folks and buy yourself a cash cow! You don't have to do anything except field a team and maintain the stadium. Win or lose, Cubs fans show up like sheep at the turnstiles! Our merchandise flies off of the shelves! Yessiree boy, this is the easiest sports franchise to manage!
In all seriousness, hopefully Cubs fans will get an ownership group that actually gives a damn.

I couldn't agree more. I would buy them, but I spent all my money on brand new hat the other day. xbangx

They haven't had an ownership group that has cared about anything other than profits for about 100 years now. Why do you think that is going to change now?

Paging Mark Cuban...?
As a Cardinals fan I wouldn't want that to happen, because I think he could do some great things with his passion and checkbook!xtwocentsx

I also think Cuban would turn the organization into a sideshow. I think the guy is another Vince Mcmahon.

I never said I thought it would change. I said hopefully it will change.
Interesting thing though, from what I've read, only the team is for sale, not Wrigley Field. If that's the case, then I wouldn't buy them. A big part of their marketability is the stadium. Without full control of both, that's going to eat into profits!

Do you think he'll get drafted (NFL)?
I'm thinking someone will in the 7th, just to have his rights incase he changes his mind.

yea someone will use there 7th rounder to draft him for the rights likely a good team who would likely have cut the 7th round pick in training camp anyway because there so talent rich
playing under Charlie Weiss for 2 seasons i would put New England in that category and Belichick if anyone could talk Samadja into playing.

I think they were just that... rumors. Unless I missed something, I didn't see anything on it in the Boston news media, which is a big media market and they'd have been all over it.

Could make for an interesting reality show on ESPN, as Trump auditions potential managers for his baseball team, or gives players like Mark Prior and Kerry Wood their unconditional releases.
