Rationale behind dropping Jimmy Moreland off the Buchanan list or did I miss something during the open date?

2 weeks ago ISUr RB James Robinson wasn't even on the 25+ Payton watch list, despite being a returning 1st team all MVFC RB a year ago. Yesterday against NDSU, he had 20 carries for 128 yards .. slow start with 6 yards in Q1 and slow finish with 13 yards on Q4 as we had to take the pass game down 3 TDs .. so in 2nd and 3rd quarters alone, he got 109 yards against top defense in FCS.

Good to see him now as top 5 contender. I see Christion, Flacco, and Robinson as strongest of the 5 listed for Payton watch .. lot of games left to play though.

you might want to add the "Int" in this one:

CB Isiah Swann, Dartmouth, Jr.- 22 TKL, 7 INT/returned one for a TD, 7 PBU in 6 games.

I did this late last night and I'm on the road today but just corrected it. Thank you!

Rationale behind dropping Jimmy Moreland off the Buchanan list or did I miss something during the open date?

Dropped off top 5 for the award but not off the list. He is on for sure unless he does nothing the rest of the year. I'm not sure if Moreland will make more than a practice squad but I believe all 5 I have on the top 5 for Buck Buchanan Award will not just make a practice squad but make a 53 man roster. They all have a serious shot to do so. Those juniors have work to do but the potential is there. This is a loaded defensive group.

Pioneer League players have to put up gaudy number to have any shot. Flacco is for sure in top 5 now as long as he has a couple more good games and keeps winning.

I'm new to these National Watch threads ... are these solely your opinions, or are you getting this from something STATS or someone else is doing ??? I though you were getting this from STATS .. if not, and it's all your's, I'd like to reframe my "complaints" as "suggestions" .. and compliment you work and effort. Was I confused ??

Not a major point, but when you have time, you might want to add the passing efficiency figure on this QB:

QB Jake Maier, UC Davis, Jr.- 193-308, 2160 yards, 21 TD, 3 INT, 62.7%, 308.6ypg, 16 carries, -45 yards in 7 games.

noted .. great work on this !! I like when people try to raise awareness of FCS on national landscape for the best teams and best players. Forums that allow debate with public scrutiny and transparency can only raise the bar on things like rankings of teams and players, and all american lists. AGS already has the best subjective poll, bar none, for this reason. The player watch lists could have similar impact on all american lists and player awards, etc.

Appreciate the work you put into this .. this is good for FCS football !!

Great to see Troy Reeder on your watch list,

he wins the CAA Defensive player of the week again, 2 in a row, recovers a fumble and blocks a punt

and Adderley returns a KO for a TD, he is not the KO returner but apparently was on the "hands team

you can see the return, where he knocks a defender down and kind of stops to stare, and then scoots it all the way....

Go to the section that says "Buck Buchanan candidates" and count down 12 names. He is there. I just took him off the "top 5" section" since some others did some things to catch up and he will need more than 4 picks to have any shot.

My bad; looked at the list a bunch of times. He will have a hard time getting picks when they don't even throw at him now. Villanova did not target a single receiver with Moreland in M2M coverage when they played. So he made up for it with a blocked punt (got it before the punter even got his foot on the ball) and a forced fumble.

DE Chris Terrell, Central Arkansas, Jr.- 28 TKL, 9.5 TFL, 5 SACKS, 1 PBU, 5 QBH, 1 FR, 1 FF in 7 games.

Glad you added him. He reminds me so much if Jonathan Woodard or Jacob Ford. I can't tell you how many times he was inches away from a sack or TFL. He just has that second motor, I'm gonna cut you off and destroy you at any angle I can get! His spin move is nasty and his catchup speed just disrupts everything. 6'3" and 270 might be short for an NFL DE but man he's a QBs worst nightmare.

He is a good one. Sometimes I go ahead and move a guy who I like but they just aren't getting the numbers. Sadly the voters put a huge focus on turnovers, TFL, and sacks or gaudy total tackle numbers for awards.

What do you think about Greg Menard from NDSU? He doesn't have NFL size for a DE but I'm wondering if he can take the Kyle Emanuel route and transition to NFL LB?

Also, I've heard NDSU RB Bruce Anderson's name come up (maybe even by you - don't remember) as a pro prospect. I can't imagine he's done much to slow that talk with his performance so far and has shown good pass catching ability as well which I know the NFL likes. Thoughts on him?

Menard is one I doubt would test well enough for LB but he should get a shot.

Anderson is really good. I almost put him on the expanded list of possible NFL combine invites. I have him as a PFA. Your WR Darrius Shepherd is one who is also worth a look. I think Easton, Volson, Shepherd, Anderson, and Dunn all get in a NFL camp unless they tank pro day. Easton Stick may get drafted in 5-7. He has been pretty good the last 2 years. I had him as a PFA previously but have bumped him up into the 6-7 range, tentatively.

Any FCS juniors that should leave college early?

I don't think so. Nobody that is just blowing it up enough yet to go in the top 3-4 rounds this early. Some of the top names I have marked while on school visits or from just tape are:

LB Dante Olson, Montana- All over the place, going to be next after Buss in that long list of NFL prospects
DE Nasir Player, ETSU- Really good performance against Tennessee- he would benefit from a transfer up to UT, Vanderbilt, App State, Clemson, Wake Forest, etc type schools where he could get in a good weight room and do what he needs to on his body to boost his stock
S Marlon Bridges, Jacksonville State- Down year so far though
RB James Robinson, Illinois St- Real good vision and pretty good speed. Draftable for sure
DE Darryl Johnson, NCAT- Same comment as for Player above
TE Charlie Taumoepeau, Portland St- TD machine when healthy
CB Rashad Robinson, JMU- coming off turf toe injury next year
LB Cameron Gill, Wagner- Flashed in 2017 and really showing draftable ability for next year
WR Jequez Ezzard, Howard- Really small but can fly and has good hands
WR Josh Pearson, Jacksonville St- Size guy with numbers
DE Chris Terrell, UCA- High motor
CB Isiah Swann, Dartmouth- Very good ball skills
WR Jazz Ferguson, NW State- Keep an eye on him. FBS transfer with size and speed
DE Ron'dell Carter, JMU- good against run and pass
LB Christian Rozeboom, SDSU- A little down this year but can run and is productive

Probably more info than you asked for but as you can see unless I find a new name or someone else breaks out super late nobody that looks ready to go early. If they can help it they all need to stay.

Some thought Doss could go early and I felt like one of the higher ones around (other than media who does not count) who had him as a 5th round guy last year. Most had him as a 6-7. He stayed and these guys should as well.

And usually 3-5 that don't should have been and 5 or so who do shouldn't have been. Why would you be amazed? The FCS now doesn't have a ton of talent. Always going to be a few but with so many teams moving up to FBS there have been less and less. I remember years when 30 or more got drafted. Now it is usually between 17-19 right now. 20 is actually the high over the last 5 years.

SmallCollege,

I've mentioned this before but not sure you saw post .. the thing about ISUr RB Robinson is that he is still getting better. He came to ISU from small HS and pretty out of shape, yet played as a true FR. He was probably 10-15 lbs overweight and just not well conditioned or trained. He broke so many records at a 4A HS (out 8A in IL) .. but he didn't need to train or be shape. Then as true FR getting reps, he got hurt early in 2016 and was rushed back for our UCA playoff game .. clearly out of shape and nowhere near 100%. So he spends most of winter get 100% healthy and slowly getting into college shape. I know kids who saw him around campus .. he did not look the part of an elite RB at all. So he was burning off the baby fat and putting on muscle, getting ready for SO season and wound up 1st team all MVFC and top 3 in rushing in MVFC, despite playing behind a weak OL and in a very hot/cold offense. Now a JR, he is sharing reps 67/33 with Markel Smith and playing even better than last year .. granted our OL is better too. But now we're seeing stuff from him we never saw last year .. more speed, more agility, better vision/decisions, and still more power .. he is both evading and punishing tacklers even more than last year. Not sure, but it still feels like he is getting stronger and better conditioned ... and learning to run with his newfound physical abilities. My point .. i think there is more upside left in him .. more than I thought was possible just last year. And while comparable to marshaunu Coprich who was smaller a bit faster, I think Coprich peaked as a JR and his NFL chances were slim to none .. but I can see Robinson becoming better than Coprich .. more power and comparable speed.

Interesting notes of FCS players drafted last year:

1. Only 2 of them did not have an invite to an all-star game last year (Senior, Shrine, NFLPA, CGS, Dream Bowl)
2. No K, P, or LS drafted.
3. All of them were either graded by the NFL scouting services in the spring or added in the fall.
4. Only 1 of them was not graded in the spring and had to be added in the fall.
5. Only 5 of the 19 saw their grades from scouts in the spring stay the same and not change during their senior years.

Conference breakdown (2018 draft only)
Big Sky- 1
CAA- 3
Ivy League- 2 (although 1 of them should not have been drafted IMO and he has been awful this year)
MEAC- 2
MVFC- 3
NEC- 1
OVC- 2
Patriot League- 1
SoCon- 1
Southland- 3

SoCon has taken the biggest hit of draft picks over the last 5-6 years of any FCS league.

Robinson is better than Coprich. He certainly did peak and was not as good as a senior. Hopefully Robinson keeps getting better. He certainly appears to be!
Some insight on SR Coprich .... I would say Coprich was just as good SR year as his JR year, it was the team around him that was not as good .. so he had to carry us more in 2015. And we did not deserve the #2 seed that year .. they should have flipped our #5 in 2014 and #2 in 2015. Anyway, QB Roberson broke his right hand in practice right before 2015 MVFC opener against UNI .. so he played entire MVFC reg season with a soft cast on his throwing hand .. so Roberson's passing numbers were way down in 2015. Plus we lost lot of studs off that 2014 offense ... 3 are still in NFL (WR Meredith, TE Oshaughnessy, OL Liedtke), plus several other from OL and WR groups. So in my view, Coprich carried our offense in 2015 while Roberson was playing thru fracture in throwing hand, and a so so OL group.

Not sure Robinson has Coprich's speed or endurance yet, but he is much more powerful and has more juke than Coprich. Coprich wasn't great at juking people .. he had this sort of upper body wiggle that threw defenders off balance so his legs didn't have to do as much. But Coprich carried the ball a lot more (per game) than Robinson is asked to. But do agree, Coprich peaked as JR, Robinson is still getting better.

He will need 2 more monster games for me to consider. Even with this game just averaging 80 per game. I really want to add their QB to the top 20-25 list but they don't have very good receiver play.
