So I am debating what road trips I am going to be able to/want to make in the upcoming season (yes I know it is over 5 months away but I craving football wicked)... and I am considering making the trip to Huntington, WV with some friends to catch the UNH v. Marshall game on Sep. 14...
Now after reading this board for a while, I know A LOT of people do not like Marshall at all and I would go as far to say that most people HATE them (my understanding is as a result of shady happenings, including some rule breaking)... but either way I figure some people would have some good advice about going to a Marshall football game, about the city of Huntington (places to stay, eat, go out etc.) and any general information at all.... anything would be greatly appreciated... THANKS in advance!!!xbowx xbowx xbowx

Beautiful town? Are you really talking about Huntington, W.V.? I've made numerous trips to Marshall over the years for football, basketball and even the SoCon track and field championships. It is an extremely dirty town with not much to do other than go to Marshall games. If you are going to a night game, make sure you catch a place to eat quickly, because the restaurants close early. I've not found any food establishments that I would recommend, though there is always the safety of the chain restaurants. Marshall fans are some of the most obnoxious and arrogant I've seen anywhere in the country. And people in Huntington can be extremely rude and inconsiderate, too. Quite simply, it is one of my two least favorite towns in America (Taft, California, an oil town at the edge of the San Joaquin Valley is the other). The game atmosphere is great, but everything else about the place is basically awful. My suggestion would be to get in and out of the place as quickly as possible. Go for the game and nothing else.

I just have to say that I love AGS, and here's one reason why. When I opened this thread and started reading it, as soon as I knew what it was about I thought "Oh-oh, wait 'til Mr. C sees this"! Two posts down...Mr. C has his say!
I love that you can really get a feel for other people!
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
But, back to topic...ahem...never been to Huntington. Wish I could help. Good luck, have fun, and if you choose this game, it may be another FCS over FBS game, just like last year! xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx
Edit - Mr. C, I hope your realize this was in no way meant in disrespect. :)

No offense taken, my man Tod. Great place to watch football. Lousy place to do anything else. And go Cats. Take the Blundering Turds apart.
P.S. Like most folks around the SoCon, I was rooting for Montana in that 1995 national championship game! Marshall was pretty much the team everyone in the SoCon hated universally.

The rest of WV is beautiful. It's the towns and the townies that F it up for everyone.

Huntington is probably the ugliest town I've seen in West Virginia (which is, for the most part, a very pretty state).

Wow... some strong feelings about the topic...was I correct in saying the animosity comes from past shady dealings by Marshall athletics when they were I-AA... or are the fans and the town just that crappy??

It has been 19 years since I have been. So things may have changed. Their feelings may not be quite as strong about UNH as it used to be about their SoCon bethren (and I use that term lightly) so maybe time and a different opponent will mellow them. If not, you won't need a bullet proof jacket, but a spit proof one might come in handyxrolleyesx
