Not gonna wait for 02 to start one...:D
Big game in the Valley: https://gobison.com/news/2018/10/15/football-mvfcs-top-two-defenses-meet-saturday-when-bison-host-illinois-state.aspx
Team stats for these two teams:
Scoring offense:
Ill State: #12 - 39.3/game
NDSU: #11 - 39.3/game
Total offense:
Ill State: #28 - 444.5/game
NDSU: #33 - 432.5/game
Scoring defense:
Ill State: #5 - 12/game
NDSU: #7 - 12.5/game
Total defense:
Ill State: #11 - 275/game
NDSU: #13 - 281/game
The 2 best defenses in the Valley will go at it.
Ill State ran all over SIU for over 400 yards last weekend...xrolleyesx...not too much of a surprise. NDSU needs to stop the run or really slow it up or it will be a long day. Both teams will want to run the ball.
Robinson (RB) will be a load to stop. Ran for over 200 yards versus SIU and Davis looks like a good QB for them.
More than likely a 4 quarter game that will be a slugfest.

Illinois St is most likely the best rushing attack NDSU will this year in the regular season but if there's an offense that I think the Bison defense matches up well against it's a run heavy offense with a QB who isn't a threat to run and that's looks like what ISUr is with Davis under center.
That said the Bison have been a bit susceptible to giving up yards through the air and it looks like Davis is plenty proficient at slinging it. I'm sure that'll be the NDSU gameplan though; try to limit Robinson and the run game and make Davis throw it.
The philosophy will likely be similar for Illinois St in that they'll want to make Stick have to throw it. 3rd downs will be key as whoever gets the most efficient play out of their QB will likely win on 3rd down.
In the end I think Stick's running ability will be the X-factor. xhomerx

Here we go .. big game for us obviously. So while our stats are very similar, Bison SOS has been a bit tougher.
- NDSU has played Massey #'s 75, 100, 117, 139, 179, 250 .. and won by an average of 27 ppg
- ISUr has played Massey #'s 108 (CSU), 124, 139, 176, 249, 406 (NAIA game .. ugh !!) .. and also won by average of 27 ppg, though dampened by 3 point loss to MoST. Main difference being, we have that stupid NAIA game.
In any case, 2 teams with very similar strenghts and stats .. but a lot less hardware in our trophe cabinet.xnonono2x We're built a lot like NDSU on offense and feature 2 very good RBs ... big and can run with Robinson (#25) at 220 lbs and Smith (#21) at 230 lbs ... both can move for their size and like to punish tacklers, with Robinson getting 2/3rd of carries and Smith getting 1/3rd .. both averaging around 6.7 ypc. OL is much improved from a year ago, WR group is improved and good enough to keep defenses honest. QB Davis (Memphis transfer) has show some big play potential but has had some ups than downs .. so we're hoping he is ready to settle in now. It took Roberson until game 9 before he truly settled down for us in 2014.
OL play has improved a lot from last year, but we were expecting this .. especially with OC Beathard back. Our defense is the surprising story this year .. officially moved to 3-4 aligment; lost 9 fullest time starters from last year, so we were expecting a slow choppy start. But we just haven't missed a beat this year. We are pretty big and deep on defense
- DTs are 6'6" 325 lb and 6'4" 295 lb
- DEs are all 6'5" to 6"7" and 250 to 270 lbs
- LBers are NFL size ... starters are 240, 250, 250, 245 .. we can tap 2 deep for speed with guys that are 235, 240, 225
- DBs are all in 190-200 range, so decent size for this level.
We're not going to be the fastest but we move well enough and have shown very good gap discipine. On offense, our RBs are hard to bring down. We struggle to pass sometimes ... so our chances of win improve a lot if we get anything going in our pass game.
We'll see if were ready to take on NDSU .. our first real challenge this year. Should be a fun game to watch unfold. Win or lose ... Here's hoping it is a good game for fans !!

Last team with the ball wins. QB with most total yards running/passing wins.
I’m sure the phrase 1:49 seconds will be brought up, and the need to play for 60 minutes.
I think we can pull off an upset, but we have to be turnover free and Brady has to use his legs as much as his arm.
Welcome to the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

Spack is punking us all .. clearly those are 2 different people. I think he hired an actor or maybe sent one of his Grad Assistants out for press conference .. the dude on left looks like he's 30 years old. xnodx
But I'll play along for arguments sake xsmiley_wix ... let's assume it is him. The story was actually about how the team counter-challenged Spack. We had rough 2 weeks against MoST (whole team) and WIU (offense). Not to mention we still haven't gotten the nasty taste out of our mouth from last years mid-season collapse at NAU and SIU (lost 42-7 at SIU) .. for first time since 2010, Spack had lost his team after NAU and going into SIU last year. So Spack was riding his team about importance of "showing up to play" in games we should win. So the team, apparently led by now back-up QB Kolbe decided to counter-challenge Spack with the pledge to shave the stache if we put SIU away .. and they decided on 5 TD margin would be needed for Spack to shave it. So this was the team's idea not Spack's.
At first, I didn't like the idea .. not sure you want statement games coming against lower tier teams. But knowing our Jeckyl & Hyde recent history and that team initiated this, I decided it was worth all the distraction because the team got the point of it all and stepped up. Our offense did what most teams do to SIU. But our young defense really stepped up .. SIU had been averaging 475 yards per game with Straub at helm, and we held them to 200 total yards ... Straub only got 100 passing yards and their RB (was getting 125 ypg) only got 25 yards.
Anyway, if it is Spack .. that is what (I heard) really happened. xdrunkyx

This should be a heck of game. ISUr seems to have the linemen that can beat NDSU on both sides of the ball. Coach Spack is one of my favorites. I don't agree with some of his player discipline issues but he's a hell of good coach and class act on the field. Plus how can you not like the stache? It'll be back soon I'm sure. We'll see if both teams are top 5 worthy or not on Saturday.

Seems both teams like to pound the rock in the running game. Who sticks with the run and gets a big play or two? Which team abandons the run first and tries to win through the air? If it becomes an aerial assault which receivers step up? Who has the better DEF?
I think either ISUr comes out with the playbook wide and goes more balanced OFF. How are the NDSU wideouts this year? Haven’t seen or heard much about the passing attack, but curious if you guys had to throw it around can the WR make plays?
Hoping for a clean, injury free football game. May the best team win.

We have one consistent WR and a bunch of guys who are out there running around. Not sure why we are not utilizing our TE's and RB's more in the passing game. We saw what we are capable of in the UNI game but that's about the only game we have really seen a decent passing attack. I guess the Delaware game early but we went ultra conservative in that one too. Hopefully we are just waiting to break it out when needed. Stick has been rather inconsistent this season but might have something to do with the WR's too.

So what is the deal with Illinois St's starting lineup? Across the board, you guys are huge- noticeably bigger than most FCS, a good portion of G5s and arguably bigger than P5 NC State who we played. At our level you get your choice of big, fast or talented-pick any TWO. The P5s get the guys with all 3 attributes. Since it's obvious that your team is huge, would you say that team speed is lacking? Or are you all fine tuning several diamonds in the rough?

I don’t think any of them will be on the sprint team. Big YES, but a lot of the damage they do has to do with the zone blocking scheme. Our RB for all their talent get sprung for some big runs due to their patience in letting the big guys up front do their job.
So far we’ve seen glimpses of them being solid in the passing game, as they’ve only given up like 2 sacks on the year. It helps to have a duo of RB that teams focus on, as the play action has been a thing of beauty when Davis is accurate.
I think late in the SIU game we wanted to run the clock out, but it seemed we threw it more than I would like to get some timing down between the QB and WR’s and TE’s. Especially in the Red Zone. Hope it was a sign that we wont be so one dimensional on Saturday. I’d love to see more throws on First/Second down to set up some 3rd and Short opportunities. (no pun 4th). If we can keep NDSU off balance and don’t commit stupid penalties and TO we have a chance.

agree with realbird for most part .. I think he focused on OL though .. which has always been big under Spack. What's change is Spack now seems to recruit bigger body types who played multiple sports. Best example is SO LT Himmelman ... so many FBS schools passed on him because he was too thin in HS at 6'10". Spack saw a multi-sport athlete (football and basketball) with long arms and could move his feet, and whose frame could carry a lot more weight .. we're pretty sure he will be drafted .. I'm not sure he got a single FBS offer, yet he was all conference as RS FR.
But I think you're also noticing our defense we've got close to an NFL sized defense at all 3 levels. It seems like Spack has evolved over the years with what player profile fits his defensiv schemes. So he recruits body types he can work with. So we're big/tall and fast enough, but mostly focus on being very good at gap discipline .. then just gets our Strength Coach to build them in weight room until theyre ready. Several good example .. but best one ins our RS FR Nose Guard John Ridgeway .. he was 6'6" 285 lbs when he signed, now he is up to 325 lbs ... he played both sides of ball in HS, plus state champ in wrestling, then did some field events in track & field.
Anyway, he recruits all around athletes with size potential, then builds them up and hopes they work out like they projected. Lot of times, they change positions as they realize their physical potential after couple years. Best thing about this years roster .. 85-90% of our 2 deep wll be back next year ... I think Spack has very high hopes for next year. This year is just going better than expected .. defense came on much faster than most of us expected after losing 9 starters from last year .. if we are good this year, that will be why.
Not sure we're ready for this game or not, but we match up almost perfectly in terms of strengths .. difference will probably be QB play and special team play .. everywhere else feels like a draw.
edit: RB James Robinson came to us from a small HS where he set almost every Illinois HS rushing record. Incredibly talented for his HS level, he was not in good shape .. but Spack knew how good he was and thought he could get him in better shape. He was actually played overweight by 15 lbs as a true FR, then got injured late in season .. so that slowed his progression. But he has burned off lot of fat, and replaced it with muscle. At 220 lbs, he is very hard to tackle and can move. Anyway, that was why we got him and he bought in.

yeesh .. or even a billboard.
Our OOC scheduling is currently pretty restricted, we try to get an FBS and Patsy game, plus we have our home/home rivalry game with Eastern Illinois ... thats been running about 110 games and counting. I would love a JMU game in any year we can't get an FBS game .. or if we start cutting back on doing EIU game every year.
I say that knowing we got stuck with a useless NAIA game this year for our Patsy game because our AD is a bean counter who demanded a home patsy game this year. Probably because we blew the budget last year when Big 10 started banning FCS games .. so instead of a payday road game we could take a bus to, we had to fly to NAU instead .. plus had just 5 home games. If we're sitting 7-4 after this season, which is 6-4 in eyes of committee .. all eyes will turn to our bean counting AD .. he will pounded if this is why we don't make playoffs.

Bison GameDay!
It will be fun to watch Menard (DE) go against the 6-10 OT from Ill State. Menard is quick and elusive and has a low center of gravity.
Personally, I think this is a good match up for the Bison defensively. Power run game is more straight up in front of you. Both run power but do it a little differently.
For the Bison, it will come down to Stick and his ability to move the chains with his arm. IMO, I would let him run more today also.
More than likely a 4 quarter game like the SDSU game. How will Davis handle the noise?
NDSU averages 6.2 yards/rush. Ill State load the box?
These are the kind of games that as a fan, I love to go to! The game last year in Normal was awesome to be at. Rain, sleet, snow all together in one game...xthumbsupx Now 70 degrees and no wind!:)

http://www.inforum.com/sports/football/4515574-cofield-may-be-next-running-back-if-anderson-cant-go
Maybe this could be a game where true FR RB Saybien Clark gets some reps? The 4 game rule for freshman is nice for these young guys.
so wasn't Dunn considered #1 before his injury ? he at least had better YPC numbers than Anderson before he went down.
As I said in my MVFC pick em ... I think this game will come down to things like QB play and special teams ... everything else feels like a draw:
- QB play ... mainly ISUr Davis QBR efficiency versus Stick running; though he burned us on couple deep balls to pull away last time. But if Davis gets our pass game going enough to keep Bison defense honest in the box, I like our chances. Robinson doesn't need much room, and both he and Smith are very hard to bring down .. they out weigh most of your LBers. So if they get any add'l room at all from our pass game, they will take fiull advantage ... I know that's a big IF and an obvious one. But our WIU game showed us the importance of being able to keep defense honest, and the SIU run game plan won't work at all against Bison. Run-pass balance is critical ... said Coach Obvious.
- Big plays on special team .. big plays or mistakes ... like any game, but it just feels like we are playing lot of strengths against strengths, so this could easily be deciding factor.
As for crowd noise impact on our offense/QB Davis audibling at line of scrimmage, Spack teams have never had a problem playing in Fargodome because of that. But Davis just got here this summer, so crowd noise and his lack of familiarity could cause problem here and there. But OC Beathard is a QB whisperer type .. he knows how to manage offenses and keep QBs head on straight.
Looking forward to a serious scrum of a game today ... the trenches will especially fun to watch. Then we see what the QBs can do to spread things out.

Dunn and Anderson split most of the carries. Cofield will fill in adequately if BA cannot go today. Plus Brooks is the change of pace guy.
1A and 1B for Dunn/Anderson

So here's how stupid I am .. when Dunn went down, I thought NDSU would have some difficulties because on the surface, I thought Anderson was more of a good system RB who wasn't really going to get his own yards ... that he just did well oin your system. Might have been slight miscalculation on my part xnodx . And I know Brooks is great change of pace guy, and now Cofield is next up in the pecking order.
By the way, I hate the 4 game RS rule. It is not enough that football players get 5 years to play 4 ... now they get 4 1/3rd ... why exactly ?? It makes zero sense to me.

Myself, I like the new rule. Let true FR get their feet wet in the college game and still keep that redshirt year.
Anderson is more of a power back that wants to run you over. Dunn is smaller and more shifty IMO.
Clark the true FR and Coefield will be the 2 main power guys next year. Wilson has had hamstring issues all year and I bet he gets redshirted this year....played as a true FR last year. He's a very good pass catcher out of the backfield.

Looking forward to watching this game as I think ISU has a much better chance to win this year vs NDSU as opposed to the past couple of seasons. ISU running game seems to be really good and is very fun to watch so I like to see, be it good or bad, how well they perform against a premier defense. Robinson seems to be an elite FCS back and is capable of breaking the big ones which could lead to an ISU win IF it happens.. His running mate Smith is also very good and tends to hit the secondary players very hard.
Obviously if I was betting money it would be on NDSU but again i like ISU's chances. Regardless I hope to see a good game like the championship game played back in 2015....as painful as that ending was I have to admit it was one of the better championship games I have ever watched and was thankful to have watched it live.

I'm a bit surprised how easily NDSU is owning the LOS. Redbirds are big but not as athletic or skilled. Should be 17-0 or 21-0 if not for the int.

On behalf of Redbird Nation let me apologize for our lackluster performance today. Anyone expecting a CLOSE game was probably like me cutting their lawn for the last time due to this shinolafest.
I was worried that the Homecoming letdown was going to occur, and all the hoopla over a flipping Stache and getting revenge on SIU was false confidence.
Great job of kicking us in the balls today and reminding us champions play hard every week.
Good grief! I need a drink and I don’t even drink.

Not the point, Stick ended up taking every snap at QB, why is that, because the freaking game was never really over. Get up on these guys, pile up the score and then get the back-ups some reps. ISU had the ball in a two possession game and that never should have happened.
All in all, great win by the Bison, ****ty second half but we should be used to those by now in the games where we get up early.

Coach K is really conservative. But I agree....go for the throat more often.
One thing is that Spencer Waege needs to be on the field more. For a RFR this kid is a beast as a pass rusher.
