NDSU WBB loses to a hockey school, Minnesota Duluth, in an exhibition game 70-65, these games are set up against these lower division teams as sort of a practice game and then they lose it. NDSU WBB has hit rock bottom and that happened a couple years back. Woof.

Wofford is just jinxed in women’s basketball. It just doesn’t seem to matter who we hire. Wofford got a women’s basketball coach whose team consistently went very far in the D-2 playoffs just about every season he was there. But all he’s been able to do at Wofford is continue a long-standing losing tradition. Injuries have not helped his cause, but I don’t like to use that as an excuse.

North Alabama went into Nashville and knocked off the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Lions jumped out to a 21 point lead which they held till late in the game when the Dores made a run that brought them even with UNA. Behind the Wallen twins, the Lions regrouped and held off the traditional SEC power for a 74-71 win in their first game in Division 1!

Last night I was having flashbacks to 1980 and 81. men jumped out quick on Vandy both seasons and then the "slightly partisan" SEC refs took charge. They did the same last night but Emma and Ivy Wallen were just two much for them.

When the men played Vandy, we had a slender, finesse team. Vandy was the second team to follow Joe B. Hall's lead at Kentucky. Both schools bulked up and looked and played like a couple of football teams. They were knocking our guys down, into the seats and into press row and NOTHING was called. When our guys tried to stand our ground... FOUL! In 81 we had a 6-11 center who was very mobile. He was scoring and swatting away shot after shot. Well, I guess you can guess what happened to him. I'm not saying we would have beaten them because they had several NBA players on those teams but we could have made it a lot closer if we had been allowed to make contact the way muscle-bound guys like Jeff Turner, Charles Davis, Ted Young, etc. It was still fun to see the Lions play in front of more than 15,000 two years in a row.

USD is the second Summit at-large, not the first. Summit press release says Northern Illinois in 1994 was the first. (You could be super-technical and say NIU isn't part of the Summit anymore or that it was called the Mid-Continent back then, but I think it should be counted.)

#2 seed/8th ranked Iowa was VERY fortunate to squeak by 15th seeded & unranked Mercer, 66-61, on the Hawkeyes’ home court. Iowa clearly had the best Player, 6-3 NCAA scoring leader & ESPN wPlayer-of-the Year, Megan Gustafson; but Mercer, just as clearly, had the better Team.

Some home cookin’ down the stretch surely helped Iowa’s cause, along with 2 very-late-game shots by Mercer that sat motionless on the rim forever, like Tiger Woods’ famous putt at The Masters, but both Bears’ shots, sadly, rolled off & outside the cup...er...basket.

By the way, Mercer was perfect from the FT line for the entire game...ZERO for ZERO. Meanwhile Mercer’s 2nd best threat on Offense fouled out with 3 minutes to play...on a horrendous call made by the same Official who QUICKLY called the ball ‘last touched by Mercer’ (it wasn’t) on a 2nd consecutive missed Iowa FT with 17 seconds to play and Mercer down by only 3. No way was she going to allow the Bears to have the ball with the shot clock off, with a chance to tie, and send it to OT. Tell you anything?

SDSU & MO ST fall in the games to Elite 8, ending the mids’ run. There is a big line in abilities between top 8 teams and the rest this year. This Rabbit fan sends a big thanks to Maci Miller and Madi Guebert who collectively hold Summit League and SDSU GOAT in most points or 3 pointers made. Great years watching these ladies!

I’ll be shocked if any team comes close to knocking off Baylor. I mean, they did lose once this year so it could happen but the lady Bears have looked invincible thus far in the tournament

If I was Miss State I wouldn't want to have gone to Portland being the #1 seed and then losing for a second time to Oregon.

I'll be real interested in the Iowa game tonight. Megan Gustafson has been on a real roll. I saw her play in person against the Gophers. She is pretty tough.

I would hazard a guess that the issues are similar to the ones that were cited in the recent termination of Georgia Tech's long-tenured Women's Basketball Coach - https://www.11alive.com/article/sports/georgia-tech-fires-womens-hoops-coach-for-fostering-toxic-and-hostile-atmosphere/85-054d714c-7f72-4c50-8d65-8581fd630453

"Mules" is bad?

Athletics Teams at the United States Military Academy, the University of Central Missouri, Muhlenberg College, Colby College, and Southern Arkansas University all use Mules as their mascots. Well, SAU is actually the Muleriders.

I sure hope "Dogs" never makes the bad list.

Mules is racist? Since when?

Sounds like a bunch of jackasses instead.

82-81 final- Baylor. Notre Dame had two free throws with three seconds to go. Missed the first- tried to miss the second- made that one!

I have mixed thoughts about this...

First, Harvard is still having difficulties winning the Ivy and the tournament. The Quackers and sometimes Yale get in the way. xsmhx

Second, do the Tarholes have reduced scholarships and the like?

I certainly haven't heard anything on that line. The longtime coach was fired but not for breaking NCAA rules, unless player treatment is one.

Many women's basketball teams, including the WNBA, use male players to practice against to get better.

I've know Brenda Frese, Maryland head basketball coach, for over twenty years. She won a national title. When i was coaching girls I would occasionally talk the B team into practicing against my varsity.
