Make the seats purple and put a 3 between the # and the 1 and this is probably an accurate version of me after a quarter of this game...

We couldn't stop ISU's Robinson and that was about the only offense they had going. Stick+Anderson+Dunn...this could get ugly.

THE SERIES: This is the 10th meeting between North Dakota State and Western Illinois dating back to 2007, the only non-conference game in the series. NDSU has won five straight and leads the series 7-2 after last year's 24-12 win in Fargo. The Bison are 5-0 in Macomb, but three of those victories have been one-possession games.

LAST YEAR: NDSU shut out Western Illinois in the second half and Easton Stick (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8038) rushed for two touchdowns in the third quarter as the Bison erased a 12-10 halftime deficit to win 24-12 in Fargo. Stick averaged 6.8 yards on nine carries and finished with 61 yards on the ground while going 11 of 18 through the air for 221 yards. RJ Urzendowski (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7457) had four receptions for 100 yards and one TD, and Bruce Anderson (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7969) led all rushers with 21 carries for 93 yards. WIU quarterback Sean McGuire was 17 of 28 passing for 185 yards and Jaelon Acklin made six catches for 115 yards. NDSU's James Hendricks (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8002), Caleb Butler (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7982) and Robbie Grimsley (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7997) each made five tackles for the Bison defense, which registered five sacks, two other tackles for loss, four pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.

FOURTH QUARTER FINISH: North Dakota State scored four fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat Northern Iowa 56-31 last week in Cedar Falls. Easton Stick (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8038) passed for four touchdowns and rushed for two scores to lead NDSU back from an early 14-0 deficit, and the Bison had their first dual 100-yard rushing performances of the season from Bruce Anderson (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7969) (170) and Lance Dunn (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7991) (104). The Bison rolled up 523 yards of total offense (295 after halftime) and committed zero turnovers against UNI for just the second time in 12 meetings since 2008. It was NDSU's first turnover-free game of the season.

SCORING HISTORY: North Dakota State's 56 points scored at Northern Iowa were the most scored by an opposing team in the UNI-Dome since the facility opened in 1976, topping the previous high set in 1983 by Southern Illinois in a 52-9 win. It was the most points allowed by UNI against an FCS opponent since a 59-14 loss at Idaho in 1981. For NDSU, it was the eighth time the Bison have scored 50 on a Missouri Valley Football Conference opponent since 2008 and the most since a 59-7 home win over Western Illinois in 2015.

BACK-TO-BACK ON ROAD: North Dakota State is facing back-to-back road games in Missouri Valley Football Conference play for the ninth time in 11 years. The Bison have won both trips in five of eight previous occasions including three straight years after 2017 victories at Indiana State and Youngstown State. Illinois State in 2010 is the only team to deal NDSU a conference road loss (34-24) the week following a Bison road win (34-29 at Youngstown State). NDSU lost the front end of its two-game road stretches in 2008 and 2014 both at Northern Iowa.

NIGHT WINS: North Dakota State has won 23 of the last 25 night games (kickoff at 6 p.m. or later) back through the 2010 season. The only night game losses in that span were 16-9 at Northern Iowa in 2010 and 27-17 to James Madison in the 2016 NCAA semifinal. The Bison have won two straight night games with last year's wins at Youngstown State (27-24, OT) and over Sam Houston State (55-13).

BISON UNANIMOUS NO. 1 IN POLLS: North Dakota State is the unanimous No. 1 pick in both FCS Top 25 polls this week after previous No. 2 James Madison lost at home to Elon. NDSU captured all 26 votes in the AFCA coaches poll and all 160 votes in the STATS FCS media poll. JMU slid to sixth in the media poll and eighth in the coaches poll with its second loss of the year. South Dakota State, which hung on to beat Indiana State 54-51 in overtime, climbed to No. 2 in the media poll to give the Missouri Valley Football Conference the top two spots for the fourth time in league history. Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky held those spots twice in 2005, and the Bison and Illinois State were 1-2 in the final 2014 poll after meeting in the national championship game.

CAPITALIZING ON TURNOVERS: NDSU is fourth in the MVFC with a plus-5 turnover margin, but the Bison have scored a conference-best 49 points off nine opponent turnovers. Linebacker Jabril Cox (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7987) became the first NDSU player since safety Del Gehrett in 1967 to record an interception return for touchdown in back-to-back games against North Alabama (43 yards) and Delaware (36 yards).

RED ZONE OPPORTUNITIES: North Dakota State leads the MVFC in red zone defense this year allowing opponents inside the 20-yard line only six times with two touchdowns and two field goals. On offense, the Bison have converted 20 of 22 red zone chances with a conference-best 18 TDs.

SHEPHERD PASSES 2,000 YARDS: Senior wide receiver Darrius Shepherd (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8036) surpassed 2,000 career receiving yards in the win over South Dakota State. Shepherd had five catches for a career-high 118 yards against SDSU and currently ranks seventh in NDSU history with 2,095 receiving yards. He is 137 yards behind Warren Holloway (2008-11) for sixth place on that list.

BISON WINNING LINE OF SCRIMMAGE: NDSU leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 18 sacks and the Bison rank sixth in FCS averaging 3.60 sacks per game. Cole Karcz (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8013) and Greg Menard (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8025) lead the Bison with 4.5 sacks each. NDSU is also the league leader in sacks allowed (4), rushing offense (288.2) and rushing defense (100.0).

MENARD FOURTH IN CAREER SACKS: Defensive end Greg Menard (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8025) moved into sole possession of fourth place on NDSU's all-time sacks list with his 32nd and 33rd sacks at Northern Iowa. The school record of 41 total sacks is held by Jerry Dahl (1973-74), Phil Hansen (1987-90) and Kyle Emanuel (2011-14).

LONGEST WINNING STREAK IN FCS: North Dakota State has the longest active winning streak in the FCS with 11 straight victories dating back to last November. Colgate is second on that list with 10 straight wins. UCF (18) and Ohio State (11) have the two longest active winning streaks in FBS.

NINE FRESHMEN PLAY: NDSU has played nine true freshmen this season. Wide receiver Phoenix Sproles (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8178), safety James Kaczor (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8176) and linebacker Jasir Cox (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8189) all played in the opener against Cal Poly. Quarterback Trey Lance (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8177), wide receiver Kenneth Channelle (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8180), defensive end Tony Pierce Jr. (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8201), cornerback Destin Talbert (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8185) and linebacker Mark Stumpf (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8191) debuted against North Alabama. Running back Saybein Clark (https://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8183) played his first game against Delaware. A new NCAA football rule this year allows student-athletes to participate in up to four games and still take a redshirt year.

I've had this game picked as my "trap game alert" since the beginning of the season. NDSU is coming off of games, and hard fought wins, against their two biggest in-conference rivals, Macomb is a oddly tough place to play, and the Bison never seem to do well with late kickoffs (like at Youngstown last year).

So if the unthinkable happens I can be the "I told you so" guy and if it doesn't I can claim a successful reverse jinx! Hopefully it's the latter.

WIU's defense is not as good as in past years. Give up a lot of points.

WIU's run game is not very good also....ranked 108/124 with 94 yards/game.

Nothing fancy for NDSU. Stop the run and make them 1-dimensional.

Bison win by 2 scores or more.

The trees are turning pretty colors in Macomb and we're supposed to get the first snow of the season today (very light, probably won't even stay on the ground).
So at least I'll have something nice to look at while we're getting destroyed on the field tomorrow.

Only every game you guys have played here. While NDSU does seem to have trouble in Macomb, they haven't actually lost any games here. WIU is down a bit from the last few years...we're not a bad team, obviously, but just not quite where we were last year. Meanwhile, NDSU looks like they're in 2013 form.

LOL! I read that and clearly missed it.

Here is what POD is talking about from the article.

Illinois State is glad safety Luther Kirk is back after missing all of last season. He returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown with 4:28 left in the game to give the Redbirds a 10-point lead over Western Illinois. WIU won 33-16. The pick was Kirk's second in two Valley games and his third of the season.

I am going to have to redo my top 25 as I thought ISUr won the game.

WIU always plays the Bison tough. The 59-7 game in Fargo a few years ago was an anomaly between these two teams.

I suspect WIU will open it up with the passing game. Try to jump on the Bison early like UNI and SDSU.

Heard your coach on the local radio, he seems like a 'players coach'.

I mean, I hope so, but I feel like the potential is always there against a team like NDSU.

Coach Elliott is a pretty down-to-earth guy. He's the first coach we've had who's younger than I am, and he's younger than many of current MVFC Head Coaches' coaching careers: http://www.inforum.com/sports/football/4512256-western-illinois-elliott-bucking-trend-veteran-coaches-league

I hope the Seniors and Captains of the team, tell Coach Klieman, that THEY will handle it. Would be a good way to let the coaches know, they can trust the kids to handle their own problems and corral their own. If I was the coach, and students didn't stand up for the punishment, I'd tell him to not plan on playing for awhile. I'd tell him he will be wearing a suit and a tie to each practice and game for awhile. Knowing you are up by 3 scores and then rubbing it in to a classy team like WIU who, to the best of my memory, has ran a clean program, that is inexcuseable. Does NDSU have 2nd string in or is our backup QB actually throwing better than McGuire was?

Looks like a mixture of both. NDSU rotates, but it looks like the backup is doing solid job.

Was hoping for a closer game, but was afraid it'd be like that. Can't throw that many INTs and expect to still be in the game against NDSU.

Drive safe bison fans. Good luck the rest of the season.

Some thoughts:

Win is a win.
Tackling needs to get better.
Waegge (DE) is a beast and is only a RFR.
Passing game still inconsistent IMO.
Hopefully Bruce is OK, he is needed.
Punting (Wegner) is doing a great job.

Ah, yup...sounds about right. Macomb->Blandinsville->La Harpe->Terre Haute (pronounced like terry hut)->Lomax->Carmen->Gulfport->Burlington. It's a weird squiggly route on 2-lane roads through towns under 1k people, but it's still the fastest way to B-town. I used to drive up and back at least every other week for work. Nice thing is, La Harpe is around the halfway point...you know what La Harpe has?...not much...but it's got a Caseys ;)

And you know who's from Burlington?...former UNI/Rams/Cardinals star QB Kurt Warner.

I'm obviously a spoiled fan but I was a little frustrated the Bison didn't get a couple more INTs. It was pretty clear early on that McGuire was throwing up some prayers and a few of them were answered. That said I continue to be impressed with WIU's front 7 and specifically with Saunders... that man should be playing on Sundays next year. Lesure also sure looked like a #1 receiver today (could use him at NDSU right now - once upon a time he was an NDSU verbal) which has been lacking for WIU to this point... he's not Acklin but he sure seems like a guy that can win 1:1 battles for McGuire going forward.

Good luck to your guys as well the rest of the way as well, the schedule lightens up considerably for WIU from here on out so it's not outside the realm of possibility that they go on a run and put themselves back into the playoff picture but they have no more margin for error left.

Saw Waege play back at Watertown when he was in High School, dude was a straight up monster. Only bright spot on Watertown that year, and boy was he a bright spot. Not suprised to see him having success at NDSU, though he’d look better in Blue.

But yeah, there is no good way to to northwest out of Macomb, and GPS takes you on some pretty interesting backroads.

We lost every 50/50 ball and their were a couple of throws that seem to go right through our DB's hands.

He should try Hendricks at WR, he seems to have pretty good hands. Just kidding, sort of.

A bit of a stretch to say he’s from there.

He may have been born there but he spent his years in Cedar Rapids.

My daughter was born in Waterloo. She will never claim she’s from Waterloo. Lived in CF until we moved south further.

My son was born in Cedar Rapids. He won’t claim to being from Cedar Rapids - unless he gets sick of describing where our town is and he just goes “The Cedar Rapids metro”

Did you live in Hettinger after being born? Did your formative years happen there?

My daughter saying she’s from Waterloo is silly. She left the hotel and went “home” to Cedar Falls. Where she lived for 6 months before we moved.

I can’t imagine her even ever claiming CF as home

I didn't use the place very much. Lots of those types of bathrooms where I grew up, guys would drop smoke bombs and sit on the roof and shoot the rats when they came running out. We didn't have an shower in our house until we got the toilet put it, I started school when I was 5, they showed us the locker rooms during the tour of the school when I first started. Saw there was a shower, used to go to school early and sneak down there and use it, I wasn't the only one that did that.

Did you have to walk uphill, into the wind, through waist deep snow, both to and from school like I did? My mother would make my sister and me a hot baked potato for lunch, but we put it inside our jacket to use as heat so we didn't freeze to death on our walk to school. That's what I remember, anyways.

We used a pump well that was in the middle of my yard for water until I was 5 or 6. We weren't poor, my old man had paid for Caddy's parked in the yard, it was just a different lifestyle. But yea, we had an outdoor ****ter for a while and it was a pretty grim place. We had a dog and a cat that used to kill rats and lay the dead rats on the porch, so every once in a while, you would get up for school or something and a dead rat would be laying there.

My Grandpa was an authority on keeping a clean sanitary outhouse. He was always digging a new hole and moving the ****ter at his lake cabin. Spent a lot of summer weekends there. I told my little brother beware of the troll living underneath the outhouse. He wouldn't use it, had to take him out into the weeds!:D
