The University was founded in 1939 as John McNeese Junior College, part of LSU. In 1940, it fielded a football team for the first time, but the program was dormant during WWII. In 1950, it was split off from LSU and renamed McNeese State College. In 1970, it was granted Univeristy Status and changed the color scheme from LSU Purple and Gold to McNeese Blue and Gold.
500 wins in 75 years of playing football's not too shabby. They played abbreviated schedules during the first few years. It's not NDSU successful, but who is????
Congrats to my Cowboys! It was also pretty cool that the win came on the night that the University honored 75 Seasons of McNeese football and unveiled the 75th Anniversary Team, with the best players at each position.
And, no, I wasn't on that list, which isn't in the least bit surprising! ;)
