Release the hounds

I will note that I was either perfect or 1 off on 13 of the 25. I am still disappointed in the voters for not showing Towson and Chatty enough love. Also, not sure how Sac St can drop so far when they played solid on the road at WaGriz.

This week's poll article: http://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-4-top-25-results/

My thoughts:

7(!) CAA teams in the top 25.
UC Davis at #13 is their highest rank ever in the AGS poll.
Not much to gripe about this week... just minor stuff. :)
Montana St must've been the main beneficiary of the Samford/SHSU/UND flops as they picked up over 100 points and 7 spots for beating Portland State.
Nice to see Towson crack the top 25... although I still think the spread between them and Nova doesn't make much sense.
Still not sure what Wofford has done to dictate that they be in front of those 2 CAA teams right behind them.

You could add Samford to that group of headscratchers as the 3rd highest ORV vote getter. They've got more votes than those 4 combined. At least all those bottom 4 have a D1 win.

Towson getting no love from you? They put it on Nova at Nova. 528 yds. of offense and held the ball for 35 minutes. Their Morgan State win looks better after the Bears took down NC A&T. URI also seems deserving.

Few reasons:

slot voting+name recognition+ made a small run in the playoffs and have a lot of starters returning
Played an FBS Wyoming team tough without 2 defensive starters in the high altitude
Compared to last season, played the Citadel and VMI better in every statistical way, except turnover margin with the citadel
The Citadel looks decent right now.

People's tune will change if the Citadel beats Towson this week.

Heck, the Socon itself will turn around if the Citadel, Samford, Chattanooga, and Wofford win next week. Could have 4 teams ranked.

Apparently beating a weak FBS is worth about the same as a bye week ... moved up same amount the last 2 weeks !!! xrolleyesx

Top 6 or 8 seems fair given who we've played, AND our inconsistency the past 2 seasons. I fall on the side of argument that says, 3 games into new season, you're still considering prior year and overal program history/strength when ranking teams ... same argument I had with NC A&T. But how we beat CSU was somewhat impressive, but this was a game many of us believed we should win on paper. The only question in our eyes was their pass game against our largely new defense .. we have 9 new full time starters on defense, everyone else was 2nd string and/or only started couple games last year.

Offensively, the difference this year ? Returning 4.5 OL starters (instead of losing 4.5 starters plus several injuries last year), getting OC Beathard back, our WR group is better than expected, plus a QB transfer (Brady Davis) who has provided a spark on offense. Others on our fan board disagree, but I happen to think Kolbe would have been doing just as well as new guy given all the improvements on offense across the board. But Davis is the full time starter and Kolbe is #2. But our Run game will be very hard to stop behind our now ready OL, which open things up for pass game ... plus with OC Beathard back in charge, we believe the Jeckyl & Hyde BS of last 2 years under OC Dicken is behind us.

Beathard is not just smart/experienced, he's also a QB whisperer type who never loses his cool. Former OC Dicken was wired way too tight and reactive .. Kolbe lost all confidence trying to placate him. Plus Spack had Dicken on short leash .. so that made things worse with Dicken trying to keep his job. Those who recall me making excuses for my Redbirds the last 2 years .. this was our problem in a nutshell. Just look at our ups and downs ... beat Northwestern one week, lost to EIU and InSU the next 2. Get blown out by NAU and SIU one week, man handle top 8 USD and YSU the next 2 weeks. Once teams figured us out on offense, Dicken had no plan B .. he would just lose his cool. Several games we lost our sh-t after great first half .. WIU and ISUb ... they made adjustments, we had no plan B. Hoping those days are mostly over now.

I think Elon's wins are clearly better. In my opinion beating Furman by 38 is much more impressive than beating The Citadel by 7 and I think Chuck South is actually a semi-quality win whereas VMI is just "cannon fodder". Both teams showed well against their FBS teams given the relative strength of each FBS team (USF is quite a bit better than Wyoming) so I don't give either an edge there.

It's a common misconception but it's more accurate to look at points gained vs spots gained when determining how impressed the voter pool is with a team. From week 2 to 3 ISUr picked up 179 points which was good for a 3 spot move (but an average of less than 2 spots moved up per ballot). From last week to this week they picked up 473 points which is an average of about a 5 spot move up per ballot even though they only moved up 4 spots in the overall consensus poll.

Hmm, so if we hadn't blown that WIU game, we'd probably be creeping towards the top ten, and have a very easy road to 6-0. Kind of crazy, considering how many dysfunctions this Griz team has.

edit: Wait, what am I saying? It doesn't matter how bad Poly is, we'll probably **** that up like usual.

FWIW, Furman is not that good this year. It's hard to say if they are average or bad, but they lost their OC from last year, an All American Center and a very good QB. Their offense is a shell of what they used to be. They are 0-3 again and lost to an ETSU team they pulverized last year. So I agree that Elon's win was impressive because Furman is probably average and beating average teams like that is good.

However, I'll defend Wofford's wins over VMI and The Citadel thus: Wofford's the only FCS team this year to put VMI away in the first half. VMI is measurably better on offense, and we played better on both sides of the ball (check the yardage, etc). We also played much better against the Citadel than we did last year, never losing lead and keeping the Citadel in the game by being -3 in TO margin (compared to last year where we needed a last minute comeback). And the Citadel is better this year, playing a Chattanooga team who will probably make the playoffs to OT and losing to us, but beating a strong Mercer team.

I'm not going to argue Wofford being higher (I think I rank us consistently at 10 or so), but I will make the argument that we've performed much better than last year (so far) and that if you think last year's team deserved a top 10-12 ranking, so far we deserve that + a little better.

At the beginning of the year I would have said yes, but you did see that ETSU beat Furman right? Furman is a train wreck right now. And beating us by 7 is about right since we both run the option. I think their were like 10 possessions in the game. We were not going to have a shoot out. Chuck South is an enigma still. Wish our game was not postponed. I guess I have just seen these teams play and it the parity is there. I am loath to mention that VMI almost took it to WCU on the road. Cannon fodder, yeah, but they have fight in them still. I gave the FBS wins a wash as well due to competition and point spread.

I guess I have just seen these teams play and it the parity is there. I am loath to mention that VMI almost took it to WCU on the road. Cannon fodder, yeah, but they have fight in them still. I gave the FBS wins a wash as well due to competition and point spread.
You both could be right. I did concede in my first post it's just a minor gripe. With their schedules both Wofford and Elon will have many more chances throughout the rest of the year to prove who's better.

I'm a little higher on UC-Davis and Stony Brook than some others; but overall my poll looks very similar to this one. I think I chose Colgate over Montana State; and it was a toss-up.

Some of you guys make my life really f'n miserable because you can't check your emails for some reason.

As the resident Wofford homer I will say this: We are not a top 5 team (yet?) so don't rank us there. Coach Conklin may well be the Keeler to Ayer's Raymond (few people will get that reference) but that has yet to be seen.

Towson getting no love from you? They put it on Nova at Nova. 528 yds. of offense and held the ball for 35 minutes. Their Morgan State win looks better after the Bears took down NC A&T. URI also seems deserving.

One game doesn't a season make or a poll placement earn. Towson also gave up 490 yards of offense; it was a 1-score game w/8 minutes to go in the 4th; Towson nearly coughed up a 3-TD lead.

I don't put nearly as much stock in Morgan State's win @ A&T as you do. I watched that game specifically last night and came away singularly unimpressed. The Bears are still 1-3 and A&T's offense is crap.

That said, both Towson and URI are within 5-10 spots of a place on my ballot.

I think we are right where we should be at this point. If we win the next two weeks, beating ETSU and Wofford, then we deserve to move up in the polls considerably - maybe #10-12ish. We just need to take it one game at a time and stay focused on improving every week. The SoCon has no guaranteed wins (except perhaps VMI and even they have shown life as of late).

I am not sure that McNeese deserves a rating higher than Nicholls but I will concede that I probably should have had them a little closer in my poll.

POD, the McNeese coach does not like to run up the score on people and at times just wants to play too conservatively. I disagree wholeheartedly, and it has almost cost us a couple of games in his 3-year tenure as head coach, and probably cost us one.

At UND, who is not as bad as people think, our coach was quoted as saying that he basically turned it over to the defense in the second half with a 17-0 lead. The offense went very basic, very vanilla, and it almost cost the Cowboys a victory.

Against HBU, McNeese had a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, he started playing second and third string and redshirt players.

The score of the McNeese-Nicholls game was 20-3 until the final six seconds of the game. Nicholls drove for a TD WITH THEIR STARTERS STILL IN THE GAME. That TD made the score a little more respectable.

Yes, the Cowboys lost 30-3 at BYU. Look at the game stats. Big ol' BYU didn't just trounce the smaller McNeese team. Stupid penalties and turnovers did us in. To BYU's credit, they took advantage of every bad thing McNeese did.

I do not think McNeese is Top 10. Probably in the 11-15 range, I hope. Those who dropped the Cowboys many spots this week did not look at the box score (BYU had only 291 total yards of offense) or are hypocrites because most on here say losing to an FBS team shouldn't really cost an FCS school. BYU was #25. This week they are #20 in one poll, so beating McNeese didn't hurt their ranking any.

POD, your poll was awesome last week because you said so. IMO you took a step back this week.

POD, the McNeese coach does not like to run up the score on people and at times just wants to play too conservatively. I disagree wholeheartedly, and it has almost cost us a couple of games in his 3-year tenure as head coach, and probably cost us one.

Well, you were successful with this one last week.

You notice how I didn't have that "boast" on it this week. Northern Colorado sucks but we will see how they do against the other North Dakota school, if they lose to UND, I might drop you even further, just kidding. I probably should have had you and Nicholls closer in the poll but head to head isn't always the end all be all but it does matter. Yea, I will probably concede I could have done better on this pick but I so blinded by the awesomeness of the Nicholls shellacking of SHSU that I lost my mind. There were a bunch of other guys that had Nicholls ahead of McNeese, I would be curious as to their thoughts. You have a couple cream puffs in a row, tell your coach to run the score up a little.xlolx

Over the last decade, I've seen the Jacks D play well against the triple option once. It's mind-boggling how bad we are against it regardless of how good our defense is.

Even when we do win against it, it's usually because we had to outscore it rather than slow it down/stop it.

Yeah, I mean we're all about even obviously (WIU, MSU, UM)...close games with the home team winning by a few in head-to-head matchups. I don't have a problem with people ordering the three teams pretty much however they want to, although I'd think that we should all be within a few spots of each other.

This is why I have a spreadsheet on Google sheets that tells me in one column whether a cell has a value that exists in the next column. What that does is cross off a team if I have them listed in the top 25. So if a team isn't yet crossed off I either need to find a spot for them or drop them from my top 25.

What that does is cross off a team if I have them listed in the top 25. So if a team isn't yet crossed off I either need to find a spot for them or drop them from my top 25.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O_SCFCBR5zGaDsR0fRPCC0cHxuaDBsXkVpBcNvW-rY4/edit?usp=sharing

Other than disagreeing with a few of your rankings xeyebrowx, love this sheet and will be stealing formula for my own sheet. Thanks a bunch for sharing. xsalutex

Not bad except for Sammy at 22. They have done nothing to deserve a ranking so far this season!

Can we just all appreciate Western Carolina moving up in the ORV section of the poll from #40 to #31 after beating VMI by 2 points at home. WCU, with a 7 point win over a terrible D2 team, and a 2 point win over annually one of the worst scholarship conference teams in the FCS managed to catch some attention for some reason. I guess we'll find out more about them as the season carries on. Upwards of 80-90% of the FCS would be 3-0 with their schedule so far, and probably have better wins.

Ah - those were supposed to have been changed - South Dakota State at #3, Kennesaw State at #7, and nothing wrong in ranking a team with an FBS win in the top 25

You lost to Missery State by 32 points and barely squeaked by an awful SUU...

To call UTEP an "FBS win" is pathetic. In all D1 football there are only 57 worse teams than UTEP and UTEP is the WORST FBS TEAM BY A COUNTRY MILE. So you played the: 197, 92, 134, and 209 teams, respectively, in the nation out of 255 total teams for D1 football and you think that deserves a ranking? There is no reason why NAU should be ranked and to rank them is a combination of homerism and lazy voting.

You are bragging about putting Nicholls ahead of McNeese, and you are one of the very few (if any) who have done that.

Apparently, I am not the only one who rates Villanova over Towson, and I did tell you that Towson is just out of my Top 25.

But if you wish to hang your hat on this and boast about it, it must really mean a lot to you. So congratulations.

I don't think you attacked me, you were just pointing out flaws in my poll, and I stated that head to head is important but it is not the only factor and you must agree with this given your Villanova/Towson placement in your poll. I actually think that Nicholls and McNeese are probably pretty even, we will see.

As do I. One of the strengths of the poll is that you have voters from all across the nation, from all conferences and many schools, and differing voting methods. One person's method may not be yours. But you are free to publish the Kingpin poll and proclaim it is the only acceptable one.

I like that you put McNeese above UCA and Nicholls. They have some pretty good defensive leaders in the conference and what appears to be a balanced offense. UCA has a good defense but the offense is taking the traditional slow time starting. That always bites them later in the season. Nicholls is just struggling against teams that are struggling even worse like Sam. UCA and Nicholls don't play each other but UCA and McNeese do later in the year AT McNeese. But putting McNeese above those two teams is a good choice.
