Hall of Famer Larry Brown has agreed to become the next head coach of the New York Knicks, according to a published report.

New York Newsday reports negotiations were continuing on a five-year contract worth between $50 million to $60 million. A formal announcement could come as early as Wednesday.

Brown met with Knicks president of basketball operations, Isiah Thomas, last Thursday and then met with interim head coach Herb Williams on Monday.

It was last week that Brown was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Pistons, as he was two years into a five-year, $25 million contract with Detroit.

The 64-year-old Brown would return to his roots to coach. Brown, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, was born in Brooklyn on September 14, 1940.

The Pistons and Brown worked out their contract squabble last week, freeing him to get another head coaching job without limitations. He guided Detroit to the NBA Championship in 2004 and lost the Finals in seven games to San Antonio this past season.

Brown had insisted that if he is healthy enough to keep coaching, he would remain on the sidelines with the Pistons. Following the NBA Finals defeat, Brown checked himself into a hospital for two days because of complications from November hip surgery. ...

I like Larry a lot. But the Knicks will not be good next year. They might pull out 8th in the Eastern Conference, but that roster is NOT good. They also have a multitude of financial problems because of the many players who are being way overpaid, and they can't do anything about it for cap room.

Larry was a rollin' stone,
Wherever he laid his hat was his home,
And when he quit
All he left us was alone!

I agree that this is how they should be, blur, but have you taken a look at what Brown has done EVERYPLACE he has gone? It's pretty amazing - he took the Clippers for God's sake to the playoffs a couple of times.

This is gonna be interesting.

As a Pistons fan, I was excited to see Larry come and I'm glad he was with us for the past two years; but I'm glad he's gone. Our #2 draft pick--Darko Milivic (sp)--would never see the floor with Larry at the healm. Of course the Pistons front court is pretty loaded as well, but after two years of riding the pine, it's time he gets a shot.
