McNeese at BYU - Would love to see a Cowboy upset.
SHSU at Nicholls - SHSU may not be as powerful offensively, but still think this will be a win.
ACU at SFA - Was last week really a fluke for SFA? Maybe, but I think there could be more there.
SLU at Lamar - Just the better team.

McNeese at BYU. Will the Y suffer a let down coming off a huge win? I don’t see it.
SHSU at Nicholls. Coin toss goes to the home team
ACU at SFA . Worry a little about a talented underperforming team with something to prove after last week’s beat down but ACU just gets better each week.
SLU at Lamar. Easy pick here.

Sam/Nicholls is a toss up game. I'm leaning Sam, just because they know this is a must win. Plus, I'd rather them win this weak than having to play with everything on the line next week when UCA comes to town.

SFA appears to be this year's dumpster fire. Reminds me of another D1 team from Arkansas I know....

Nicholls and SLU are fizzling out. SLU already has 3 division I losses and Nicholls 2 with the SHSU game being that critical possible third. Can't see either of them running the table the rest of the year. Those were two teams I thought would make some noise but scheduling has blasted them. SFA is a trainwreck. Sam has some life in them with only 2 games played so far and the schedule they have left. McNeese appears to be rolling. ACU just has too many tough games left to make it to 8 wins.

Nicholls could very easily be 1-3, Sam is dealing with trying to replace key guys, who really knows what SLU is but the schedule does them no favors. Realized I left out UCA in talking about the upper echelon of SLC teams. Jury is still somewhat out on them as well. So who is to say who else can step up behind McNeese. Not sure this is a 3-bid league this year. Might be back to two and perhaps not even that if things don't go well.

It is only week 4 :) Long way to go before anyone is THE team this year. McNeese gets UCA at home but that did not work out too well last time. SLU in Hammond is always a battle (not to mention up and coming ACU and possibly UIW)

xlolx I understand why you forgot them. I knew we lost a ton from last year but a poster on our board put it this way:

Lost the best HC in league and several members of his staff.

Lost veteran QB who was SLC player of the year.

Lost all of OL except one who is a sophomore this year.

Lost top two receivers and top two TE’s.

Lost SLC defensive player of year who now in NFL.

Lost probably best DB we have ever had who is now in NFL.

Lost LB who got a look in NFL.

But even losing all that Tulsa still had to make 2 comebacks against us. It took a downpour to slow down our offense against Murray State. SLU at their place was tough but I really think for what we lack in experience we make up for in team chemistry and effort. I personally watched numerous players this summer running before the sun came up, lugging jugs of water all over campus in the 95 degree heat, and so much more. Yeah, we are VERY young with like only 12 seniors. But man there is a culture of winning there and recruits come in and plug right in where they are needed and they believe they have a place on that team. It's a good thing to see. So maybe not this year but watch out the next few!

So true! And though McNeese has a win streak against your Demons, Demonguy, too many of those wins were nailbiters which came down to the wire. Barring unfortunate injuries, the Demons should only continue to improve. SLU and Northwestern will be a tough stretch for the Cowboys as those contests are back-to-back on the road, following the home contest against UCA.

xlolx True. But I'm trying to digest all of it. When last season ended the way it did it was like the program was abandoned with all that left. I'm wondering what our perception will be if we lose a couple of games. Sammy in two weeks will be another good test. If they lose this weekend they will have 2 losses and need to beat us to stay viable for the playoffs. It seems there are turning point games every week in our league. xlolx

Apparently UCA had been recruiting well and has a head coach who knows the program well. Another advantage was your second and third stringers got experience in many games last year, and so even if they were not starters they had experience. Consistent programs like UCA, Sam, McNeese, etc. have that luxury to get leads and give other players experience. McNeese, when all is said and done, is a pretty young team, but even so, early in the HBU game the Cowboys were already playing backups/redshirts.

xlolx Honestly I can see more of our programs moving to the Sunbelt. I mean we play UALR and ASU in most sports anyway. Plus the Sunbelt is a VERY regional conference for us AND the in the SLC we seem to be the odd man out geographically. But finances will not allow us yet to move football to that level. I definitely think we are going to be a tough out for everyone this year. Concerned that we got up 28-0 on Lamar and then let them tie it, but this is a group of guys who are still learning how to win. And always better to learn those lessons while actually winning...

I have been looking at other threads with weekly “Power Rankings” for various conferences. I couldn’t begin to rank the SLC.

AGS for sure! But we are seeing with all the early season matchups for teams likely to go to the playoffs that that pot is thinning out quickly. I was hoping we'd get 3 to 4 teams in the playoffs this year but I just don't see that happening. If McNeese keeps on playing strong they will likely go. If Nicholls loses this weekend its highly unlikely. If Sam loses this weekend they are on the border of NOT going because of remaining schedule. SLU I believe has lost their way out of it. SFA is a mess. UCA is a big unknown. NWST is a question.

The SLC will get one: Likely McNeese.
If two then the game this weekend will determine if it CAN be UCA or SHSU at year's end. But a couple of others have a shot so I'm not saying it will be the Bears OR the Bearkats alone.

For those who say UCA's AD Teague will sway it towards UCA...um, not. He's been on the committee before when they COULD have, not should have, and didn't do it then. Now he's the leader of the picking committee he gets no vote for his team now also. Plus if its' between UCA and SHSU or UCA and ACU, the head to head will determine who goes. But knowing Teague for years he's not one to push an agenda for UCA. He's too by the book. That's why he constantly gets gigs like this. Surprised he's not working FOR the NCAA itself already.

During most years since we have joined the SLC I could look ahead at our schedule and predict with some certainty which games we were very likely to win and which we were very, very likely to lose. I can’t do that this year. I don’t see a game on our schedule we can’t win, and I don’t see anyone who can’t beat us.

I'll predict it now:

If UCA can go to SHSU next week and win, they'll run the conference table.

If they lose, most likely they'll lose to McNeese as well.

My thoughts on this are simple: UCA won in tough conditions last week, and going into Huntsville and coming out with a win will show me that the Bears can win the big games on the road. McNeese may be a tougher game than SHSU, but we've had their number the last couple of years. Having the confidence of beat SHSU at their house should translate well to playing in Lake Charles.

The reverse is true for losing: Losing in Huntsville will make me think a win on the road against another top 25 team may not happen. It will show that our team is still a bit young and may have trouble with the big stage games in the conference.

First, UCA and McNeese have picked up quality early season wins. Congratulations.

I don’t see it as simple as you present it though. Even if you get by SHSU, you stand more of a chance than in recent years of being ambushed by the “have nots” of the league. Your playoff dreams could easily be derailed by NWSU or ACU, for example.

No reason why the SLC shouldn’t have two teams in. While a loss this weekend would likely put Nicholls out, a Sam loss would leave them on the fence. I still think this is a two, possible three bid conference. Some combo of McNeese, SHSU, UCA, Nicholls, SELA.

McNeese should be the conference favorites from here on out, but a mid season stretch involving a game against UCA and a trip to Hammond will kind of make or break their SLC hopes. Every other game is winnable.

Sam needs to beat Nicholls and UCA to feel secure because a 2-0 stretch here would be huge. SELA comes to town later in the season. Should take care of the rest with no issues. A loss between one of those three mentioned games should put them on the fence.

UCA is unknown. They lost a ton of talent but don’t look too bad in the highlights I saw. Already took care of SELA. Sam and McNeese will be big, but since this is a team we don’t know much about every week will be something to keep an eye on. Can’t wait to see the Bears in Huntsville!

One more conference loss probably puts Nicholls out. If they were to lose to Sam and McNeese back to back, not sure what they could do to recover. Better get that offense going soon.

SELA needs to win out.

Its raining in North Houston as I speak, but not sure if HBU is at home. They get little media coverage.

Dont think there will be any rain for Sam Nicholls game.

I have read that there are wildfires in Utah. Smoke from the fires could be an issue and some high school events have been cancelled due to the smoke.

From what I have read they are not planning on that being an issue for the game but that could change.

So far it has just been a straight drizzly morning, but I am still about 45 minutes west of Fort Worth. Nothing that will cancel a game.

Another wave possibly coming, but maybe clear out before 6:00.

Lots of moisture coming up off the gulf

Sat in the rain for 3 hours last night watching my son's high school team win. Constant downpours all day here so I'm glad it's a bye week. xlolx

Nicholls and Sam are in a weather delay. Says game will begin at 3:50. This is the second week in a row for Nicholls to be in a delay.

Will the delay hurt one team more than the other?

I think the delay probably hurts Nicholls more. The home crowd weakens as the delay goes on. The road fans are there regardless.

Winners this week:
McNeese at BYU
SHSU at Nicholls
ACU at SFA
SLU at Lamar

Not surprised at the McNeese game. SHSU shocked me. 7 points?! ACU what happened?! SLU escapes Lamar? Ok....

About to post the next week's pickem.

Not surprised at the McNeese game.

:( Yeah, it would have been nice if we didn't hand everything to them. Not like they needed the 10 penalties, 4 turnovers and going 0-10 on 3rd time to beat the spread. I just wished for a better game. Oh well, on to the woodchoppers.
