NWST at Lamar (Lamar not playing very well)
SFA at IUW (Hard to tell since we did not play this week, but I like the leadership of Sawyer)

Home field advantage should go to the 'Kats. The Fighting Hawks lost to Washington 45-3, but the game was respectable until the end. UW scored 21 points in the 4th quarter. UND has a good quarterback and an all-purpose guy by the name of Santiago, small but speedy and strong.

Our defense is better than in the past. But our success this season will rest on our QB situation. I think Schmid will end up being the guy. I just hope Keeler can recognize that Dare may not be the best option even though he is his guy he brought in.

It has to be tough on your team to be facing another team who has two or three more games worth of experience than y'all when you are still figuring things out.
McNeese is young on defense and it is costing us in giving up some big plays. I think one of our freshman keeps tripping over his shoelaces. Hopefully, these will be corrected. HBU is much better than last year, IMO. Still the Cowboys got a big lead and played lots of bodies during the game.
ACU, I hope you get a different officiating crew. If not, watch carefully how they repeatedly will not spot the ball correctly. Also, on one of HBU's scores, our coach had been calling for a TO and they refused to grant it. A few late hits on our quarterbacks, plus Tabary having his helmet pulled off his head with no flag....I just hope you and McNeese have better officiating this week.

Ok, here I go. I am also on the page that none of these are slam dunks and it should be an interesting weekend.
ACU at HBU - I hope we learned our lesson this past weekend, because; yes, HBU has an offense this year. I didn't think much of their 1st game, but was surprised with what they did with McNeese. We will have key players back and line ups more set. IF we don't lay an egg again we should still win.
Nicholls at McNeese - Hhmmm, how banged up is Nicholls right now? Did McNeese learn some lessons against HBU? I am flipping a coin on this one....but I like ya Cowboys.
North Dakota at SHSU - Ok Sammy, we kept our promise and won to hopefully make the SLC proud, so asking you to win this one.
NWST at Lamar - NSU seems to be turning a corner as well.
SFA at IUW - Even with all the mix up, SFA just has too much talent for UIW.
UCA at SLU - UCA, can your defense step up enough?

John Santiago is picking up right where he left off, averaged almost 8 yards per carry at #9 Washington for 140 yards, also caught one for 17 yards.
The O-line is not the same as last years, with only 2 starters back and 1 who was out with injury, something they had a lot of last season.
Should be a good one and yes SHSU will be hard to beat at home, more than likely will win, just going for the upset pick, along with HBU.

My very early preliminary take on the SLC is that The middle ranks are hardest to predict right now—- Northwestern State looked impressive last weekend. ACU is 2-0 against the betting line. HBU put up a surprising number of points against McNeese. And SFA remains an unknown. The Jacks were humbled against Miss State but who among would have done better? That’s all we know about SFA at this point.
Among the top half of the conference, SLU May overtake UCA this year and Nicholls v McNeese is a coin toss. My vote goes to the home team. Sam gets a SLC pride vote from me.
Withnghat said, here goes....
ACU at HBU
Nicholls at McNeese
North Dakota at SHSU
NWST at Lamar
SFA at IUW. UIW. UIW.UIW it’s UIW. Whatever, they still lose to SFA

Looks like we have a bunch of picks already so I'll continue with what I asked in the previous weeks:
1. Are there any injuries or suspensions that may affect your next game?
2. What things have impressed/depressed you about your team's play so far?
For the first question UCA doesn't have any injuries that I know about that will affect our next game AT SLU. I'm sure there are some kids dinged up after the rain game but I don't recall anyone being stretchered off the field.
Impressed:
UCA Defense held the Racers to (-3) yards total from the 9:35 mark in the 3rd quarter to the end of the game. (Previous Racer drive ended in a touchback.)
UCA allowed the Racers 56 total yards rushing.
UCA's Lester Wells caught 9 passes for 158 yards against the Racers.
Depressed:
UCA's Oline needs to give a young QB a couple more seconds.
UCA's DBs have to relearn assignments.

If it means anything, I have been to quite a few of HBU's basketball games, and they have a bigger pep band than they do a marching band -- which didn't march, by the way. In fact, I am not sure but there might have been more band members who stayed in the stands and did not go out on the field. I was surprised that the band didn't at least have matching T-shirts.

The real noise came from a couple of students (?) with a BASEBALL BAT who drummed/pounded and made a ton of noise. Good thing for McNeese fans -- Cowbells were allowed. In fact, there were HBU fans with cowbells or dogbells. ?

I was going to try and make the trip down to Houston this weekend, but don't think I will be able to. It should be an interesting game. I don't know if we will have much of a crowd there. I was really disappointed with our home opener turn out.

I was impressed with your pass game. QB had those passes on a rope in the first half but got shaken up in the second half. Racers allowed 10 tackles for loss. Get that Oline to block and the Racers will win some good games this year. Good luck the rest of the year! xpeacex

We're relatively healthy after weeks 1 and 2, and hopefully get a couple of guys back this week.
As far as positives, we've held our own vs two undefeated FBS teams. We had a great chance to beat ULM and played LSU closer than the final score. The stats may not indicate it, but we're playing pretty well on defense, and our QB and WRs are playing at a pretty high level on offense. Chason Virgil is completing 70% of his passes vs FBS competition.
On the negative side, we haven't been able to establish a consistent running game, mainly because we've been without our top two running backs the first two weeks, and faced a couple of stingy FBS run defenses. We've had way too many self-inflicted wounds, such as false start penalties, snap count issues, and missed blocking assignments which has put us behind the chains on a number drives. If we get those corrected, we have a chance to be very explosive.

Impressed: our young secondary played well
Impressed: overall, our defense looks better than in the past
Impressed: student turnout for the game
Depressed: Bad QB play. It's likely we are spoiled but Mike Dare was brutal. We will see if Keeler pulls the trigger.

Thanks for the insight. I don't think many will pick UCA over SLU this year. We start over with only one returning olineman, new qb, lost tons of defense, and new head coach to say the least. We really should have beaten Tulsa but we made our mistakes. The Murray State game never gave fans a good view of our team because the weather got both teams WAAAY out of sync. RBs slipping on the turf, receivers dropping wide open TD passes as they slip through their wet hands, QB shaking gallons of water off his fingers before he gets the snap, and tackling reduced to bumping the guy down instead of grabbing them. xlolx Just ugly. I'll have to catch the SLU game on ESPN+ because my kids have games this weekend too. But that's alright. I'll make it to EVERY campus eventually in the next couple of years. xthumbsupx

We are not as fast paced or spread out as in the past. Keeler is trying to go with a more balanced offensive attack. This transition may work in your favor as it's new to the players. I am also looking forward to this game.

Northwestern State:
IMPRESSED: QB play and general offense. The new OC has brought a great system in and brought his QB, Shelton Eppler, with him. Eppler (and incumbent Clay Holgorsen) has played well, throwing four TDs in the first half against Grambling. It appears Eppler has distanced himself and taken the starting job, though Holgorsen hasn't done anything wrong.
IMPRESSED: Takeaways. Demons have given up some yards (especially on QB scrambles) but are +6 in turnover margin through two games. Also have 6 sacks through two games, including two at A&M. Very aggressive defense
DEPRESSED: Kicking. Demons missed two FGs at Texas A&M, then had a FG and XP blocked vs Grambling.

ACU is 2-0 against the line this year. My hunch is 3-0 after Saturday.
NW State looks like a good bet as well. Lamar looked hapless on Saturday.

This is how I see the remaining year for each team and the possibility of making the playoffs. Green = likely. Yellow = chance. Orange = border. Red=unlikely. Not sure if HBU is eligible.

Just realized something. UCA only has ONE home game the first 5 weeks of the season. xconfusedx Anyone else hate it when there isn't a home game at least once every other weekend at home?

I don’t think SHSU or Nichols are anymore likely than McNeese UCA NWST or SLU at this point. We’ll know a lot more after this week but I think there’s too much football left and haven’t seen enough to give me confidence in any SLC team yet. Someone will emerge the clear favorite to make the playoffs in the next couple weeks.

I agree. It's September 11. We don't know who will be healthy this weekend, let alone in October and November. Nine conference games to go, and anything can happen along the way.

I get the sense we're seeing the beginnings of a transition in the SLC. What that means exactly, I don't know, but the league bench is getting a little deeper.

I see shifts taking place and the SLC getting deeper. For that reason alone I don't think I could make any predictions at this point. There are just too many unknowns and too many variables. I still think the upper tier of the SLC has the best chances to make the playoffs than the middle or lower tiers. ACU has made good progress but I don't know if I would have us yellow yet over orange.

If you look at this season for example most of the bottom feeders in the conference the last few years appear to be better and not the automatic wins they have been in the past.

Man if that's the case would you make any of them up? I mean if the magical number for the playoffs is about 8 wins...how in the world are you going to get that number?! If not, the canceled game might as well be a loss. geez...

You also wonder if they could move it. Have been wondering with that low pressure in the gulf..... Rested is one thing, but I think you might also have to knock some rust off after two weeks.... plus considering enough games for playoff potential. That really sucks.

Hopefully San Antonio ends up being rain and not lightening. I wonder if our game at HBU ends up being affected. I guess we will see. Right now I hope people are getting out of the Carolinas and not trying to hunker down. Between the coastal flooding and the freshwater flooding, this is not a storm to stay home with because systems will be down for a while afterwards even if you don't get stranded.

Witnessed one of the most bonkers games I’ve ever seen. Demons got up on Lamar 28-0 in the first half. Lamar scored 28 unanswered. Demons scored to go up 35-28. Lamar tied it up. NSU scored two TDS, including an INSANE 70-yd one-handed catch by Jazz Ferguson. Demons go up 49-35. Lamar scores twice but the XP on the last TD was blocked and NSU ran out the clock on the last drive to win 49-48. Shelton Eppler set schools records with 474 yds and 6 TDs passing. And Jazz Ferguson is the best WR in the league. He’s unreal

Power Rating the SLC used to be relatively simple. Sam Houston at the top and UIW or Houston Baptist at the bottom. 2018 is a bit more of a challenge.
For this week, McNeese and UCA move to the top. Sam slipped a little but the season is still young. The bottom and middle of the conference is harder to sort out.

Yes, it's that bad.
What a mess, as we go into week 4 with a total of 1 TD, and looking at 1 winning season in now 7 years.
Ivey has his work cut out for him to bring someone into Nac and clean up this mess of a football program.
