He's likely working towards a full-on holiday food coma right now. I'm sure when the big guy awakes he'll be as pissy as usual. At least Weis was somewhat of a happy portly fellow. Mangino treated everyone like they stole his piece of the pie. He could definitely coach though. Brought a version of the run 'n shoot to Oklahoma in 1999 and won a title with it in 2000. That style of offense was unheard of in the Big 12 outside of Lubbock. Nebraska was still a top 5 program running the option. At Texas, Ricky Williams had just broke the rushing record.

Have a strong feeling Georgia Tech is going to be sorry for passing over Scott Satterfield and Jeff Monken to take on Collins.

December 7th, 2018, 09:57 AM
Curt Cignetti's resume is actually very strong. In addition to being the head coach at Elon and previously D2 IUP, he was also an assistant coach at Pitt, NC State, and Alabama (and before that, Temple), and was the recruiting coordinator at both NC State and Alabama. At NC State, he coached Phillip Rivers and successfully recruited Russell Wilson (before Wilson eventually transferred to Wisconsin). At Alabama, he was an assistant on one national championship team (2009) and his recruits played major roles on two others (2011, 2012). IMO, he should be a serious candidate at Temple.

The favorite probably should be former Temple assistant and current Baylor associate head coach Fran Brown, IF Temple is interested in Brown (who is in his mid-30s) and former Temple head coach and current Baylor head coach Matt Rhule, who also coached Brown as an assistant when Brown played at Western Carolina, thinks Brown is ready to be a head coach.

If we do better than Collins we'll be looking for another new coach after next year. The whole situation is a joke and why I really don't go "all in" supporting the football program because it's impossible to truly build anything. The Sun Belt might very well have surpassed Conference USA.

Coastal Carolina beat their champ by 4 touchdowns, and App State has a 45-13 lead over the runner up early in the 4th quarter.

That's what happens when you expand based on media markets rather than bringing in good programs.

CUSA is terrible. Marshall was brought in by a struggling Virginia Tech in an attempt to keep their bowl streak alive. The 8 win Herd lost 41-20 in front of a half-hearted crowd.

Utah State completely clowned North Texas, App State is destroying MTSU. Just a bunch of junk....

Lol might have passed? The Sunbelt has been ahead of both the MAC and CUSA since 2015, coincidentally the same year that App and GaSouthern were eligible to participate in bowls. If Troy wins their bowl game, then it almost guarantees that the trend continues. It would also give the Sunbelt East 3 teams with multi-digit wins this year.

If there were 3k people there I would be shocked. UAB brought a chunk of fans that filled up one section and half of another. Rest looked empty.

The chance of UAB and App State playing was there to be had. Once App State won the SBC champ game they were locked into the New Orleans Bowl to play a CUSA team. The CUSA champ always gets to pick their bowl game. UAB picked Boca Raton over New Orleans because it still was a Champ vs Champ game and it was in FAU's backdoor.

I'd had much rather watched App State vs. Fresno State or Utah State than AppSt vs. UAB, though.

Lots of mismatches this year. Also a lot of teams that generally have no fan bases, let alone traveling ones. It always amuses me why teams choose to go to destination bowls farther away than their fans will travel. UABs CUSA championship game was near empty...they knew they weren’t going to travel far...should have gone to New Orleans. I don’t care though because GaSoutherns crowd looked great on TV. Our fans always travel well. Sold most Camellia bowl tickets ever (not an old bowl).

I'm watching BYU lead WMU 7-0 in the 1st in an old fashion slugfest. Although, BYU's offense has been putrid all year. I'm actually surprised their coaching is keeping his job.

I think it was a major mistake for BYU to go independent. They thought that they would be the next Notre Dame. They have become irrelevant while Utah and Utah State move the needle more than they do.

Their bball program has taken a hit too since moving to the WCC. They can't recruit with Gonzaga and one would argue St. Mary's has consistently had more talent the last 5-10 years. The rest of the programs in the WCC really don't stir the masses. Although, most if not all have history of national success.

Well, maybe BYU would cause some issues. The Cougars dominated the 2nd half on their way to a 49-18 win. The final 30 minutes was definitely the best I saw the BYU "O" all season....

So, the second-best team in the AAC lost to 6-6 Wake Forest in an especially bad ACC, and also got bulldozed by Mizzou. And that's why UCF doesn't deserve to be in the CFP.

The AAC might be the best G5 league without question but it's closer to the rest of the G5 than the P5 without a doubt.

Saying Memphis was the second best team in the AAC is like saying Northwestern is the second best team in the Big 10 or ULL is the second best team in the SBC. Memphis was without their OC who took the NAU job. Their "O" was not the same today. Credit to a very well coached Wake Forest team for battling back. Just an observation: I've noticed the AAC likes to toot their own whenever they get a big bowl win (like Florida State in 2015 or Auburn last season) but when they take losses it's always "we just couldn't get up for the game, the bowls are exhibition matches anyways, one of our coaches left", blah blah blah.

The way I see it, if teams like UCF want to be in the conversation they need to schedule fewer of the Pitts and Marylads and play more UGAs and Alabamas, even if it means you have to take a paycheck to do it. Really, the entire AAC needs to overcome their delusions of grandeur and do more of that.

The BCS/NY6 bowl wins if nothing else show the league's ceiling in a one off situation. It buys at least some credibility against the top teams from the P5 conferences. That's about the best you're going to do unless you catch a break in non-conference scheduling. These minor bowl games really don't mean anything. It's great filler for ESPN during the holidays. Some of these bowls have been especially awful this season. No conference is immune to the bowl game checkout.

UCF and the rest of the G5 are in an impossible situation. Schedules are made years advance so you have to make sure you're at an elite level and so is your P5 opponent when the stars align. Given how coaching staffs constantly turnover there will never be a G5 program that can generate enough momentum for inclusion into a 4 team playoff.

TCU isn’t the type of school to be a national powerhouse in a P5. They’ve had some dang good years with players like Trevone Boykin etc. But they were a better fit for G5. Notre Dame is the only private Christian school who competes for national titles. Teams like TCU and BYU will never reach that level.

They were 4th in the penultimate CFB playoff poll in 2014 before Ohio State jumped them with their Big 10 romp over Wisconsin. So they've been in the "hunt" while in the Big 12. TCU getting left out got the wheels really turning for the return of the Big 12 title game.

I've always wondered how the Cotton Bowl itself survives. I know they've managed to convince Oklahoma and Texas to keep their game as part of the state fair. Outside of that, what else does the stadium host?

This was originally the Ticket City Bowl iirc. It came into existence when the Cotton Bowl game moved to Jerry's World....

The NCAA doesn't really have much say in any of this.
The NCAA needs the P5 schools. The P5 schools would do just fine without the NCAA.
Without the P5, March Madness would lose a lot of its luster (and $$$) and March Madness is essentially the NCAA's main revenue source.
If the P5 schools ever leave, the NCAA would likely create a G5 championship.

The Sun Belt definitely got a boost by losing several of those teams and CUSA shot itself in the foot by adding UNCC. ODU at least has a bowl win against a MAC team. But what helped the Sun Belt the most was actually adding teams that have a football history. AppSt, GaSo, and CCU. GaSt has even been two two bowls, winning one against former Sun Belt member WKU in the Cure Bowl. It's almost wild to think that the Sun Belt isn't the most embarrassing FBS conference any longer.

SMU is ranked #24 this week, making the poll for the first time since 1986, before they got the death penalty. I got this on another site. I got this from another site:

Some things that were going on the week of October 21st, 1986, the last time SMU was ranked in the AP Poll:

1) It was the AP top 20 poll, not top 25. SMU was #18. Miami was #1. Other teams that were in the top 20 that week that are also in the top 25 this week:

#2 Alabama, #4 Michigan, #5 Oklahoma, #6 Penn State (eventual champion), #7 Auburn, #8 Washington, #10 Texas AM, #11 Iowa, #12 LSU, and #16 Clemson. The only teams that were in that week's top 10 that are not ranked right now were #3 Nebraska and #9 Arizona State. The more things change ....

2) Ronald Reagan was President, and would be for another 2 1/2 years. The USSR still existed and nobody had any inkling it would ever not exist.

3) I was 22, a senior at USF. USF wouldn't have a football team for 11 more years, so my dorm hall was filled with Miami, Florida, and FSU banners.

4) The #1 movie was "Crocodlle Dundee", the #1 album was "Fore" by Huey Lewis and the News, and the #1 song was "When I Think of You" by Janet Jackson.

5) October 21st, 1986 was 12,032 days ago, or 1.039 Billion seconds ago.

My Owls got run out of Dallas by #19 SMU 45-21. They're legit and we don't play well on the road. Next week we get UCF in Philly....

Temple's loss to SMU can be summed up by three factors:

1) The Owls did a terrible job defending the deep pass. SMU had at least 3-5 completed deep passes where the receiver had at least 2-3 steps on the Temple defender.
2) Temple's receivers dropped a high number of passes. Most of those passes, had they been caught, would have been big plays (potential touchdowns in a couple cases) and/or first downs.
3) The Owls' offensive line did not do a good job in run blocking, which is usually one of Temple's strengths.

Incidentally, I plan to attend the Central Florida/Temple game next week. (It will probably be the only Temple game I attend this season unfortunately; their schedule and various other teams' schedules have made it difficult for me to attend my typical minimum two Temple games per season unless I want to have my weekends occupied every single weekend for 2+ months.)

App State has a great G5 team, but that one loss to Georgia Southern will keep them out of any decent bowl. Unfortunately for them, they are trapped in the Sun Belt for the time being and C-USA isn't any better. Unless the Big XII expands and opens up a spot in the AAC, they are stuck where they are.

Temple fell a little short in a 15-13 loss at Cincinnati. The Owls trailed at one point in the 2nd half 13-0, but fought back to give themselves a chance late before an interception with about 1:20 left in the 4th quarter sealed the win for the Bearcats. The key play of the game actually occurred after Temple scored its first touchdown. On the PAT, Cincinnati blocked the kick and returned it for a 2 point play of their own. Instead of trailing 13-7 had the kick been successful, the Owls trailed 15-6 after their first touchdown, and they could not get the two scores necessary to overcome the deficit.

Temple will host Connecticut in their regular season finale next Saturday (11/30), while Cincinnati, who clinched the AAC East Division title with the win, will play at Memphis in a big game on Black Friday (11/29). (For whatever it is worth, there is a good chance I will be attending that Cincinnati/Memphis game.) If Memphis wins that game, the two teams will play again at the same venue (Liberty Bowl) for the AAC championship the following Saturday, while a Cincinnati win combined with a Navy win over Houston on Saturday would give the Midshipmen the AAC West Division title and allow Cincinnati to host Navy in the AAC title game.

Overall it was a good season for the Owls. We've become one of the more consistent programs in all of FBS the last 10 years. The ability to survive consistent coaching turnover has been impressive.

The bowl games just don't interest me that much. Last year was our best bowl since the program's turnaround (Independence vs Daniel Jones and Duke) and we didn't have a coaching staff to prepare us for it. This year I think we'll have a staff but the opponent and destination will be far less appealing.

I think Temple probably will play in a lower profile bowl among the AAC's bowl tie-ins because the Owls slot behind so many teams in the top-heavy AAC in terms of the bowl selection process. (My impression based on the last few years of where Temple and other AAC teams have played in bowl games is that the better AAC teams, i.e. those with the best conference and overall records, get the first choices as to where/who they will play.) Temple will slot behind Memphis, Cincinnati, Navy, SMU, and Central Florida in the bowl selection order this season, assuming the AAC slots the teams as I think they do.

I hope Temple plays in the Boca Raton Bowl, mainly because that game is being televised on an over-the-air TV network and will be played on Saturday afternoon (unlike many of the other AAC bowl tie-ins, which are played on weekday afternoons during the holidays). That combination of TV network and date/time of game means more eyeballs may be able to see Temple football play, which will help the Temple football brand.

My guess is it will be Eastern Michigan. The other most likely candidates are Toledo (MAC) and Florida International (Conference USA). FIU's surprise win over Miami (FL) may enable them to play in a bowl game, not only because it got them to 6 wins, but also because that win carries some cache that neither Eastern Michigan nor Toledo have with any of their wins (though EMU did beat Illinois and Toledo did beat BYU).

Eastern Michigan is historically one of the worst programs in DI-A/FBS, and because of that and its close proximity to Michigan (<10 miles west), EMU has a small fanbase. That, along with the fact Toledo beat EMU this season, was a major factor in my thinking Eastern Michigan will be the .500 DI-A/FBS team excluded from a bowl game.

Ironically, I’ve attended a game at Eastern Michigan, in 2016 (against Toledo to boot; many of the fans who attended, I'd guess at least 25-30% of the crowd, were Toledo fans). At the time I went it was the 10th largest crowd in stadium history (and largest since I think 2008). The paid attendance was 21K and change.

Shawn Elliot, coach of Georgia State, let slip in a radio interview that they will be heading out west to the Arizona Bowl. This is the last year the Sun Belt is associated with the Arizona Bowl, which starting in 2020 will become one of the Mountain West tier 1 bowls. Heavily attended by locals and since it is an independent bowl decides its schedule without the ESPN input. Even though this Bowl is only shown on CBS Sports it is a highly regarded bowl by the MWC.

It is the third time Temple will play in Military Bowl (originally known as the EagleBank Bowl); they previously played in the game after the 2009 and 2016 seasons.

You couldn't me pay to go this game. 6-6 teams have no business being in a bowl game. Mediocrity/average should not be rewarded with a bowl game. I would have been perfectly happy had our season simply ended with the dominating win over UConn to finish 8-4. Hopefully our NFL guys are smart enough not to play in this meaningless exhibition.

How about App State? 12-1, ranked in the Top 25 lose their coach and get "rewarded" with a bowl game against a middling at best UAB squad. If I'm the Mountaineers I would said thanks for the offer but we're happy with how our season ended without a bottom of the barrel bowl against an inferior opponent.

The primary reason I'd have interest in seeing the North Carolina/Temple game is it is practically in my back yard; it only takes about 30-40 minutes to get to Annapolis from where I live (though it takes a lot longer during rush hour). (The game was even more convenient when it was played at RFK Stadium; I could use the DC Metrorail to get there and not use my car at all.)

I don't think some fans of G5 teams get it when it comes to bowl games; the only good bowl game that exists for G5 teams is the NY6 bowl game. If your team isn't in that game, and they had a very good season like Appalachian State (or teams like Boise State, Cincinnati, Navy, Southern Methodist, Air Force, Florida Atlantic, or Louisiana-Lafayette), they're probably playing a good but not great G5 team or a P5 team that is about the 7th or 8th best team in its conference in their bowl game. The only teams among those I listed who aren't playing one of the teams in the two groups I mentioned are SMU, Florida Atlantic (who are playing each other), and Navy (who is playing a pretty good Kansas State team that handed Oklahoma its only loss).

I know some Temple fans are excited the Owls are playing a P5 team, but with the way the bowl conference selections are made, they and other good G5 teams never play a good P5 team in a bowl game unless they win the NY6 bowl spot. G5 teams usually have much more of a chance to post a notable win in their regular season schedules against a P5 team, which in some cases may even be a home game for the G5 team. (Temple was unlucky that both Maryland and Georgia Tech sucked this year.)

I'd rather only the G5 conference champions go to a bowl then this current setup. If that meant Temple went to a bowl once a decade or longer then awesome! When we get there it will have tremendous meaning/value. Plus, it would be against a truly quality opponent. I would likely consider attending such an event. As it is, I'll likely never attend a bowl unless it's the NY6 one. Even then, if we were in a similar situation as Memphis (coaching staff in disarray) I'd likely opt out. I have honestly no idea why anyone would piss away money and their families time to attend a G5 or low level P5 bowl game. No way in hell would I battle I-95 misery two days after Christmas to see 8-4 Temple vs 6-6 UNC.

The bowl system has evolved into nothing more than channel fill for ESPN. All they care about is throwing crap against the wall and hedging their bets that people will watch because it's football and its the holidays. The reality is people might watch but they're not engaged. These games are nothing more than background music except for a select few (playoffs, Rose, maybe 3-4 more).

Since basically half of FBS will compete in bowls the number of these teams that will be without adequate coaching staffs is significant. As a result they'll be completely ill prepared to play which further devalues the game. I'm happy players have wised up and opted to sit out these exhibitions.

I agree with just about everything except the players sitting out. I don't like the message that sends to the school or your teammates. As for 95 traffic? From the NE, head down through Delaware and across the Bay Bridge (though that may still be under construction).

From the Scranton area, using I-81, I-83, I-695 (Baltimore area), and I-97 to Annapolis would also work. From the Lehigh Valley, either I-78 or US 222 and US 30 would replace part/all of I-81 and possibly part of I-83.
