I'll do what I can to post all the reports from SHSU spring football. It's going to be an exciting time for sure with Rhett Bomar taking the reps behind center.
I think while Bomar is going to be getting all the attention outside the Bearkat Nation, the eyes of those in the Bearkat fan base will keep their eyes on the defensive side of things. There are several new pieces to the puzzle on the defensive side with Texas transfer Chris Brown and Blinn Jr College transfer Ryan Glotson getting all the 'oooo's and 'ahhhh's heading into the spring. The Kats also return all-SLC performer David Branch after a medical redshirt year.
Got to love football! Best of luck to Coach Whitten and the Kats this spring as they get ready for the battleground that is the SLC...

The long wait is finally over for Bearkat football fans, as spring practice kicks off Thursday at Bowers Stadium.
Sam Houston State will take the field around 3:45 p.m. for the first of 14 practices sessions over the next few weeks. The Kats have eight starters coming back from last season’s Southland Conference runner-up squad and 52 lettermen.
The buzz heading into spring camp surrounds a pair of transfers on both sides of the ball.
Former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar will make his debut as the Bearkats starting signal caller. Bomar transferred right before the start of last season but never got a chance to play because of year long suspension by the NCAA for a rule violation.

The years the Kats have competed for the SLC title, they have had an explosive offensive player whether it DD Terry last year or even WRs like Jarrod Fuller or Jonathan Cooper...
We have Rhett Bomar, but the question is, who will step up alongside him and bet he next Fuller, Cooper or Terry. My gut feeling is that Blake Martin is going to have an amazing year as is Trey Payne. Who will step it up to the next level?

Spring roster is posted...
http://bearkats.shsu.edu/football/roster.html
Also, from Coach Whitten on Rhett Bomar...
"We're excited to have Rhett get the opportunity to work with the number one unit this spring," Whitten said. "This fall he worked with the twos. While we've lost some good receivers, we think we have a solid group in camp. About the only time we were very explosive on offense last year was when D. D. Terry would break a long run. Becoming more explosive is a priority this spring."

Breakdown of talent this spring...
23 returning offensive lettermen, six of whom are starters (including four offensive linemen and a preseason All-American tight end)...
20 defensive lettermen return, five starters which includes three LBs...
Kats return two specialists, the PK and the all important deep-snapper...

Man, I am very excited about this season. Seems the Kats made the right moves on both sides of the ball to get them in SLC contention, maybe national contention.
Can't wait to read the reports from the Spring practices.

Bomar settling into starting QB spot
Wide receivers making progress early this spring

It’s been a year since quarterback Rhett Bomar entered spring football drills as a starting quarterback.
And even though there have only been two practices this spring, the junior transfer from Oklahoma is beginning to feel right at home with his Bearkat teammates on the turf at Bowers Stadium.
Bomar arrived at Sam Houston State in the fall, but had to sit out the season because of a year-long suspension by the NCAA for a rules violation. That’s behind him now, and Bomar is focused on doing whatever it takes to help the Kats win.
“It feels pretty good to get back out there,” Bomar said following Saturday’s morning session. “It was tough taking a year off, but to be back out there competing, sweating is great. It’s something I really missed.”

Sounds like good things are happening this spring. I just hope we can settle on a RB by the time the season starts.
At least we don't have to worry about a QB carosel again this season. xnodx

Wide receivers show promise Monday

The Sam Houston State football team practiced in full pads for the first time during spring drills Monday afternoon at Bowers Stadium.
The Bearkats opened practice with basic position drills before closing out the day with offense vs. defense matchups.
“We were a little unorganized today, but that usually happens the first day of pads,” Bearkat head coach Todd Whitten said. “I thought all in all we had good effort and intensity.”
While most of the attention this spring surrounds highly touted quarterback Rhett Bomar, finding replacements at wide receiver for Brandon Perry, Michael Malone and Brian Christian is on the front burner.

Babers is a DB and yes he is back. Also a big plus for us is that DE David Branch was granted a medical redshirt and will compete this year. He is healthy.

From the local fishwrap about SHSU looking for offensive playmakers (alongside Bomar and replacing DD Terry)...
SLC Notebook: Bearkat football finding playmakers on offense
Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor
The Sam Houston State football team began the third week of spring drills Monday afternoon, and so far, head coach Todd Whitten likes what he is seeing from some of the young guys.
The players are looking more comfortable and sharper during practice after shaking off the winter rust that came with a three-month layoff following last season.
The offense continues to show big-play abilities with new quarterback Rhett Bomar, All-Southland Conference tight end Blake Martin and four of the five returning offensive linemen from last year’s squad.
The Bearkats are trying to break in three new starting wide receivers and find some running backs to help feel the void left by D.D. Terry.

Coverage from scrimmage #2. Seems the defense always gets back at the offense in the second scrimmage. We'll see how the Orange and White game shapes up when the divided Kats squad hits the field next week in the annual spring game...
Defense shines in second spring scrimmage
April 14 , 2007
From the Huntsville Item
HUNTSVILLE -- TyMagic Robinson rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and Chris Poullard added 31 yards and a score on seven carries as the play of the running backs was an offensive highlight for Sam Houston State in the Bearkats' second full scrimmage of 2007 spring ball Saturday morning.
Sam Houston State ran 80 plays during the hour-long scrimmage. The Bearkat defense created five turnovers with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
"The defense was flying around and making some big hits. They played hard and really physical," SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. "Obviously, you have to be concerned about the offense turning the ball over five times, but the defense came to play today."
On cold and windy morning, Rhett Bomar completed nine of 21 passes for 156 yards and Brett Hicks added seven of 17 attempts for 82 yards. Tight end Blake Martin had receptions of 59 and 26 yards.
"Coming into the spring, we were concerned about finding a replacement for D. D. Terry, the league's leading rusher last year, but our running backs have continued to improved," Whitten said. "Chris Poullard is having a great spring and is our starter right now. He's a tough runner and he's getting it done. TyMagic had a nice today today as well."
Spring practice will conclude Saturday, April 21, with the annual Orange-White spring game at Bowers Stadium at 10 a.m.

Kat fans,
I noticed your oline is around 6'1" in height. The big emphasis in the SLC according to Coach Conque is height. Is the lack of height on your oline part of the "plan" for your teams style of play? Not slamming it, just wondering since I heard SFA has monsters. I will check it out though.

I guess since 75% of UCAs squad are freshman and sophs, in about 2 to 3 years and some meat on their bones, they will be massive. SHSU has nearly 20 seniors, will they experience the same turnover as UCA? SHSU has 25 juniors and like 10 sophomores too. How does a coach find a balance? Looks like my Bears will be experiencing the same thing 3 years from now...the imbalance that is...xpeacex

Kats plan on airing it out in Orange-White game today
Coach hopes team can cap offseason without any injuries
By Cody Stark

After weeks of anticipation, Sam Houston State football fans will finally get a chance to see what will be in store for opposing teams when the 2008 season kicks off next fall.
The annual Orange and White game will be held today at 10 a.m. at Bowers Stadium as the Bearkats wrap up spring practice. SHSU has managed to stay relatively healthy so far this spring, and head coach Todd Whitten would like that to be the case heading into the summer break.
“(The game) is exciting for the players and the fans. That is really why we do it,” Whitten said. “I just hope we get through it healthy. As a coach it always makes you kind of nervous. But this is one last time to see our guys get out and play more of a game-type situation. It’s good for them to get out and compete, and I think we will have a lot of fun.”

Game recap from the Huntsville Item...
Orange outduels White
Hicks throws two touchdowns, first-team defense impressive in 31-21 victory

For the first time since last November, Bowers Stadium had a game-day feeling Saturday as the Sam Houston State football team wrapped up spring practice with the annual Orange and White game.
With the start of the 2007 season four months away, fans had a chance to see some live football action before the summer break and the Bearkats did not disappoint.
Thanks to a solid defensive effort by the first unit and a spectacular passing performance by backup quarterback Brett Hicks, the Orange squad claimed bragging rights for the next year with a 31-21 victory.

Football fever! Love it. Hopefully we'll have some packed houses. Two Div II games at home are no deterrent it seems. People want to see the Kats compete for the SLC title, which every team in the league has a shot for each year seeing how things tend to be...

With the Annual Orange and White game completed and season tickets now on sale to the general public, attention is in full swing for the upcoming Bearkats football season.
On Monday, tickets went on sale to the general public for the 2007-08 season, and Assistant Athletic Director for Media relations Paul Ridings said that the upcoming season should see sales improve.
"With the way last season finished and our expectations for this one, we think we should have a pretty good crowd at the games," Ridings said. "We were the runner-up in the conference last year, and now we are expected to be one of the top teams in the league."
Ticket renewals have been taking place for over a month now, and have already gone up from previous seasons, with half of the season ticket holders from last year already locking up their seats. Head of athletic development Bobby Jordan said since the general admission tickets just went on sale, it was too early to tell of an improvement.
