Sorry for the delay... 5dimes is taking their time posting the spread for the Lincoln/Missouri State game. Since that game is coming up already on Thursday already I wanted to get the thread posted so no one misses it that wanted to make picks. And since I'm tallying scores I just made up my own spread for that game. With that here's the 8 games on tap in the MVFC in week 2

Like I mentioned last week you can pick the games just straight up, just against the spread, or both. It's your choice. Just make sure you note somewhere in your post when you're picking against the spread otherwise I'm just going to assume they're straight up picks. If you want to make picks both ways I'm fine with any approach you want to use to differentiate them (as long as it uses common sense) but what I'm going to do is just put the list of games once in my post and then bold who I think the straight up winners will be and underline who I think will win against the spread.

Well that MSU spread is a Professor Chaos bookie special since 5dimes is apparently not interested in putting out a line for that game. I just did some minimal research and saw Lincoln was 1-9 in D2 last year and squeaked out a road win in their opener 10-7 over Lane College who was 2-8 last year. So I'm thinking they're a bad D2 and that's why I put the spread so high.

Lincoln (MO) @ Missouri State (-35.5) - Kind of like Indiana St last week this is probably the Bears only chance to win big all year (well, except maybe against Indiana St) so I think they take advantage.

Northern Colorado @ South Dakota (-18.5) - The Yotes were impressive last week in their first game minus all-everything QB Chris Streveler but maybe that was just K-State being that bad. I'll give USD the benefit of the doubt for now.

Southern Illinois @ Ole Miss (-29) - Yeah Ole Miss is an SEC West team but their defense isn't exactly stellar and SIU knows how to puts points on the board so I think Ole Miss probably scores 50 on their own but they won't cover.

Youngstown State @ West Virginia (-28.5) - No reason to think YSU is capable of covering this spread right now.

Montana State @ South Dakota State (-11) - I really wish we had a chance to see what SDSU had against Iowa St but the old adage is a team improves most from their 1st to their 2nd game and this will technically still be SDSU's first game while the Bobcats arrow is pointing up after a quality win to start the year so I say SDSU wins at home but it's by the skin of their teeth and they don't cover.

Indiana State @ Louisville (-44.5) - 45 points is a lot! Come on Trees help me out.

Eastern Illinois @ Illinois State (-20) - Tough call on the spread here but I just don't think EIU is very good. ISUr beat them by 31 last year and that Redbird team weren't exactly world beaters.

Western Illinois @ Illinois (-7) - I absolutely suck at picking WIU games so I'm sure this means they'll cover and might even win it.

Haha basically. I watched the highlights of the Illinois / Kent State game. Both teams looked awful and it was a highlight video. Then again both squads only won 2 games last year. I sure hope that WIU can beat a bad Illinois squad. If they can't beat Illinois this year then they never will. WIU might be a little bit down, but I don't think they are as down as most think. I could be wrong though.

I don't think the MT State loss was necessarily a bad loss. Montana State had three games last year (all against top 25 teams that made the playoffs) that were decided by 4 points or less. If those games had went the other way they would have been an 8-3 team rather than a 5-6 team. Illinois on the other hand barely beat a bad Ball State team last year and now they barely beat a bad Kent State team. Regardless I think it will be a close game. Just don't have any special teams breakdowns like South Dakota did.

My hope is that we'll see a close game, step up our passing game,and have better coverage on kickoffs and punts. If we play like I know we can, I think we can win this, but if we make it close...single digit margins...and show improvement in areas, then I'll feel better looking forward to the rest of the season. Obviously I want a win, and I think we can do it, but I'd like it to at least not be embarrassing like the last two times we faced them.

Something interesting though...our QB Sean McGuire's first game that he ever played in...he was put in late the last time we played Illinois back when he was a redshirt freshman.

Btw, 5dimes finally posted a spread for the Mo St. game, not sure when it came up. They're 46.5 point favorites. Maybe if I tell my bookie that a trusted source put the spread at 35.5 he'll let me bet it. xdrunkyx It was a good guess. I think Mo St. will still cover 46.5. They don't get to win very often, so I'm guessing they'll run up the score a bit. Especially when they have a decent team like they do this year.

So to illustrate my point about how picking against the spread makes things a little more interesting this week 4 of 8 games have been picked the same by all 35 straight up pickers (so far). 3 of the remaining 4 were picked all the same with the exception of 1 or 2 pickers going with the underdog. WIU/Illinois is the only game of the 8 where there was less than a 94% consensus amongst the 35 straight up pickers. Whereas with the spread picks only one game has been a clean sweep so far amongst the 21 pickers (the Missouri St game where my made-up spread was probably too low). Of the remaining 7 only one other game has a more than 90% consensus (19 of 21 pickers think WVU covers against YSU).

Just sayin' picking against the spread is a much more wide open game....

Could be. Huslig is slinging it around pretty well though if the conditions are tough. 10-12 for 196 yards and a TD. MSU now up 14-10.

Just as a side note I'm fine with it if you still want make your week 2 picks before the Saturday kickoffs. You just won't get any points for the Missouri St game (so it'll be basically like you picked it wrong).


EDIT: Which looks like it won't hurt you in picks against the spread since it looks like everyone got that game wrong.
