Interesting. They were still using the old style when I was at a spring scrimmage two weeks ago. Looks nice, though I'd probably prefer one with that Bulldog wearing the Shako.

The name of the bulldog wearing a shako is Spike. I hate Spike -- always have, always will.

Why the dislike?

As someone who has the Bulldog as the mascot of my alma mater, Fresno State, I have always liked Spike and his shako. Incidently, the real Bulldog mascot was at The Citadel scrimmage two weeks ago.

Good design. I never was a fan of the gray helmet.

GO CATAMOUNTS!!!

I hated the gray/silver helmets, too. That was one of the changes one of our former coaches made (I won't mention the name since it conjures up memories of relying on fifth-year transfers and the general ruin of the football program in order to get back into a I-A job).

The Citadel Blue helmets are reminiscent of the glory years. The new logo looks better than the old one we had back in the 80s-90s with the big spiky letters.

I like the new helmets.. hopefully the Citadel will soon be able to return to their glory days. I always root for the military academies (as long as they aren't playing UD) and it would be nice to see El Cid back in the playoff picture.

The Citadel has also used white helmets during earlier years, but overall I have very little specific information about older designs. I have been told that they used a star decal (a la the Dallas Cowboys) during the 1970s, and a script "The Dogs" logo around 1983. I would appreciate additional information.

i've contributed several time to the site. He usually doesn't reply on e-mails unless he needs more information or something. Plus, the guy does still have a day job.

I like it, but the way The Citadel goes, they'll change it again it two or three years. It seems like they are always changing something (helmets, jerseys, coaches...).

In all seriousness, are they changing the jersey's too? I liked the ones from a few years back with the chevrons on the shoulders.

At least they didn't go back to their "rip off a conference rival" days and steal WCU's theme and have "The Dogs" again.

The uniforms were changed frequently because the coaching changes were frequent. I understand there will be some change to the uniforms as well as the helmet, but haven't heard exactly what those changes will be. I believe the helmets you refer to in your last paragraph read, "The Dawgs" in script. Those were the helmets of the long gone and forgotten Tom Moore era (Moore To See In '83).

Serif fonts do not belong on football helmets. You can get by with it if it's one or two letters (Furman and W&M do it as well as it can be done), but a whole word isn't a good idea.

They might have. Helmet Project didn't show examples from those years. I just remember they were "strikingly similar" to the style used by Western Carolina during the same time period.

Nerdy helmet info alert.

When I was doing research on Western and The Citadel I was dying to find an old photo showing the helmets facing each other from the line of scrimmage. This was the closest I could find but it does not show the El Cid helmet very well. Here is a better pic.

This is the helmet that Tom Moore brought with him and it almost the exact style that he had at Gardner-Webb.

The uniforms are changing- signed a new deal with NIKE. Russell uni's are out.

And yes in the mid 70's had a blue helmet and a star AKA Dallas Cowboys.

I remember that big ass star in the middle of the field. I think those were the Bobby Ross years. Like the new design. xthumbsupx

When we were at the GSU-Citadel game two years ago, my daughter asked me "why does that dog have a can on his head????" Quite funny if you ask me. xlolx

I believe the facemask looks too small because this is not a regulation helmet. I think it is one of those half-size mockups that are sold on various pro/college sports web sites.

That's classic! Kids come up with all the best observations.

When we got to a Wofford/WCU game a few years ago when my son was about 4, he was actually disappointed because the thought the game was going to be played between live Terriers and Catamounts. Fortunately, it wasn't because that might have been a little bloody. Either way, he continues to be a T-Dog good luck charm as they have never lost a football game he's attended.

Citadel has never lost a game against a BCS team when I have been there. Needless to say, I haven't been to a game against a BCS opponent since the early 90s. I am scared to test the "good luck" charm theory though, so I won't be going to Wisconsin this fall. LOL
