SLU at ULM. This one could go either way.
NWST at Texas A&M. Hope NWSt’s pay check is big
UCA at Tulsa new coach, first game. Bears. One up short.
ACU at Baylor ACU is a much improved team. Unfortunately so is Baylor
IUW at New Mexico no upset here.
McNeese at Northern Colorado Make the SLC proud, McNeese
Nicholls at Kansas. After close games against TAMU and UGA, Nicholls finally gets a W over a P5 team.
Kentucky Christian at Lamar. Savor the W
Southwest Baptist at Houston Baptist
SFA at Mississippi State. Miss State graciously agreed to suspend its QB for this game. It won’t be enough.

There is always a chance for us to win. We are taking this game VERY seriously and we know Baylor is vulnerable in some areas. We also know they are making strides from last year and have more depth despite their weaknesses. Liberty was farther along than us even though they weren't/aren't a powerhouse team when they won last year. We have made big improvements in culture, attitude, preparedness, strength, depth and positions from last year. Are our strides greater than theirs? I don't really know. I said on our thread that my goals are to keep Baylor below 30 and the spread 14 or less. Either way, I am going to be there watching and I hope for the upset. If they really do look past us, it could bite them...

If ACU were in that situation I don't know what I'd rather them do. I'd probably lean towards wanting them to take the money.

From what I saw during our final scrimmage tonight, I still don't see a win against Baylor unless they make enough mistakes that we actually capitalize on. We are making progress and I like that I see we are heading in a better direction. I think it will be an evening of enjoying the nice facilities on a good evening. Either way, we have a pretty decent crowd buying tickets for the game and should be some good football. If we walk away with some respect from Baylor and no injuries I am happy.

I can't say whether it's true or not, but I find it extremely hard to believe that the Nicholls administration and/or the UL system would allow their athletic department to walk away from 1.5 million dollars, especially given the budget cuts in the state of Louisiana over the last decade. You're talking enough money to cover three guarantees.

I'm going to bet that there are cancellation penalties built into the guarantee games, and insurance policies that cover the loss of revenues should those games be cancelled. If somebody told you that Nicholls turned down 1.5 million, I'm gonna go out on a limb and offer the opinion that somebody misheard something, or that the tale's been retold a few times and embellished at every retelling.
Kansas football has the lowest crowds in the entire P5, just 26.6 K per game, and they lost 1.4 million dollars last year, so I find the notion that they'd offer 1.5 to Nicholls to be patently absurd. Unless, maybe, they could have gotten a great draw who brings a lot of fans to the game, like - say a Michigan, an Ohio State or somebody they don't regularly see, who could have made up the difference by increased ticket sales.
However, Kansas only has a 50K stadium, so at best, they'd have sold 24K more tickets, and the average GA ticket at Kansas is about $20.00....so 24k x $20.00 = $480,000.00....so, by playing Nicholls, IF they could have gotten a better game, Kansas is giving up $480K, assuming a sellout, plus the guarantee of $400K or thereabouts...so it's about a $900K expenditure at worst case scenario.
Why would they agree to pay 50 % more than that to ditch Nicholls???

McNeese at Northern Colorado - I'm sure the weather will be nice though

Kentucky Christian at Lamar - The smell of petrochemical fumes in the air will not taint the Cardinals' victory

Seems like some obvious picks this week.
Here's a good question. What positives do you want to see out of YOUR team this week?
UCA:
Good defense both pass and rush, but especially pass.
Offense: Basically rebuilt so if they can move the ball up the field and threaten I'll be happy. Run game should be fine and pass game is coming along. I want to see balance.
Final score: Everyone wants a win obviously. But I want a good STRONG showing all around so voters can see how UCA holds up against a regional FBS team. A win will be a positive but a loss (as many expect) shoudn't hurt them too much IMO. I think once UCA hits the conference schedule with SHSU, McNeese, and the other ranked teams we will be able to see what they really have to offer. But a strong showing against an obvious favorite from the FBS should only give a better view of the team not necessarily move them up or down too much.

Excellent question, Bear
Here is what I hope to see from ACU
Improvement on the offensive line from starters and more depth than last year.
An improved running game. I’m anxious to watch our three new running backs.
Steady play from our QB.
From the defense. An improved pass rush.
Overall, to hang with Baylor and keep the final score much closer than the 38.5 point loss the betting line predicts.

Bear, I think that is a logical question for this week. I believe all of us wish mainly for strong showings if we are truly in a game where the win will be extremely difficult. As far as score goes for ACU, I have stated that I want to keep Baylor below 30 points defensively and the score margin at 14 or below offensively. Those are lofty and general I know.
What I want to see during the Baylor game that can make that, or a win, happen are marked improvements in a few areas: 1) reduced 3rd downs, 2) a 3rd down conversion rate of 50% or better [Considering we were at like 28% last season.], 3) at least an equal time of possession, and 4) reduced penalties and turnovers. In general, I want to see us be able to run the ball as effectively as we pass. [We were like 955 yards compared to 2152 for our opponent total last season.]
These are the types of things most teams work on I know, but it is exactly these things that will tell us our progress.

When teams like SFA, ACU, and NWST are severe underdogs and a team like UCA is an unknown though predicted to lose, while teams like Nicholls can win its always interesting to see what fans want to see from their team in these types of weeks. Being week one there are always upsets but also being week one even SLC teams are still trying to work out their chemistry and may develop later in the year. But as for week one for UCA I just want to see some consistency in every aspect of our game, even if we lose.

I wish ACU well in their game against Baylor but I think you may underestimate them. I follow the Baylor program pretty closely (wife is an alum) and Coach Rhule is a really good coach who has them moving in the right direction. I think their loss to Liberty last year will keep them from taking any team too lightly. Of course -- AnyGivenSaturday -- right?

I think you are right Daytripper. I was saying last night on our own thread how much I like Matt Rhule the more I listen to him and watch him. I love Dorrel as well and actually feel they are somewhat similar in many ways. When asked about whether Matt brought up Liberty to the team he said he didn't have to; it has been on the forefront of their minds. My goals are lofty...all I can hope for is the right bit of luck to go our way.

Wow, that would be quite an improvement. There were only three teams in FCS last year, with a 50% or better 3rd down conversion rate. Average is somewhere around 37%.
As for the Lions, like everybody else, the goal is to get off on the right foot. We'll be breaking in a new coaching staff, and it'll be interesting to see how things develop on both sides of the ball vs an improving Sun Belt opponent. Just gotta go let 'er rip. xdrunkyxxthumbsupx

I would expect QB Foster Sawyer to be on a short leash and with the first big hit on him we will see Blumrick and Covey for the rest of the game.
Just show me some improvement on the OL and the rest will fall into place on the offense.

From 28% to 50% would be a huge leap for basically 10 months worth of work for any category, but still throwing it out there ( Heck, NDSU's 3rd down pct was 47% and 4th down 67% last year.). I know our OL will have a huge part of this as well as our QB, receivers/TEs and backs. Still for myself, I want to use it as a minimum of where we need to be if we ever want to not only make the playoffs, but be successful in the playoffs and championship. Then from there I can start doing the game to game calculations. Of course, I'm not a coach or directly involved with the team so it doesn't really matter. If they go out there and let it rip, the progress will show.

xlolx That's true. I've got excited late in the season 4 out of the last 7 post season eligibile years when we at least made the first rounds. xlolx If we have to rebuild this year, then I will be kicking my dehydrator overtime with deer, moose, and elk meat to pass the days. Dude I just bought a 6 tray temp controlled one that can dehydrate 5 - 7 lbs of meat in less than 24 hours. It's amazing to see that 5 pounds of deer meat can fit into one sandwich sized bag after deyhdrating. Ugh. xlolx Hey I tell locals that want their kill jerkied it only costs half of what I make. Some even come over to watch the process and even help with the cutting, salting and seasoning, and placement. Now they're hooked! Fruit is pretty good too. Bananas are supersweet though. POSITIVES
* No Injuries
* No Turnovers (Except for one late INT by Blumrick near the very end of the game)
* Only 56 yards in penalties
* 16 First Downs
* TOP 31:16 (Had some good drives against one of the best defenses in the country)
* The team did not quit and competed hard on every play
* WR & TE Play (8 different receivers caught a pass; Goree with a very athletic catch at the goal line had the call reversed. Even the unbiased announcers said it was a bad call as the replay showed it was a catch but they ruled on the field it was not and felt it was not conclusive) TE Allen Arclies is back and he had two nice long catches of 20+ up the middle.
* Defensive Front is good (Put a lot of pressure on the QB; Thompson (6 QB Hurries) went 13-31 passing.)
* Foster Sawyer (when given time, he hits his target, didn’t short hop anyone)
* Tamrick Pace (Caught 5 for 73 yards)
* Storm Ruiz (Went 2 for 2; 36 & 33 nailing his attempts right down the middle)
* Caleb Lawallen Punting (Almost 40 yards per punt and pinning 2 inside the 10)
* Jae’lon Oglesby is going to be the real deal, showed flashes of his agility and speed when the OL gave him some time to hit his opening.
NEGATIVE
* Secondary Break Downs (Gave up too many explosive plays)
* Offensive Line struggles (But did only give up 4 sacks and has improved)
* Out gained 618-254 in offense
BOTTOM LINE
* Excited about our receivers, Oglesby, defensive front, and special teams.
* Need for the OL and Secondary to get better (And they probably will)

McNeese won and won on the road. However, the offense scored only ONE touchdown. The other scores were a field goal (and we had one blocked) and a pick six. I don't know if the altitude or conservative play calling did us in in the second half, but it was not fun. The defense played well for most of the game, but if our offense doesn't figure out how to score once we get in the red zone -- so many missed opportunities, it is going to be a long season.
Even in losses, ACU and UCA have nothing to hang their heads about. SFA faced a powerful SEC team and I think the Jacks will show they are better than this performance as the season goes on. Nicholls does what Nicholls does. I did hear rumors that the Bearkats did struggle a bit with open date, and so that gives the rest of us some hope. #SouthlandStrong

UCA:
Positives: Run game. Both backs. Even though Blackman was stifled by a strong run defense he showed a strong push through the line. Crossley easily ran outside routes. We knew this coming in so no surprise.
Pass game: Smith's first game against anybody was good. Accurate and on line. Against an FBS with fewer targets due to travel restrictions he did as expected.
Negatives: Poor coaching decisions. Stuck to the run faaaar too long. Tulsa had it bottled up. Needed to call some screens and short yard passes. But it was Nathan's first game as head coach. Adjustments will be made no doubt.
Overall: Not a bad showing against an FBS for UCA. Lead twice and if it weren't for the fumbled kickoff leading to their TD AND the TD that wasn't credited to Blackman then UCA likely would have won this game. A full roster in Conway will be bad news for opponents this year. Murray State is next.

If you only played 28 guys then your roster size probably didnt matter since thats less than half the league limit. My guess is you played 28 because your coach was trying to keep the best players on the field. We didnt play as many as we normally would either.

It was reported that McNeese took 80 players on its trip to UNC. Normally they would have taken 65, but with the new redshirt rule and the high altitude, a larger number was taken. Twenty-eight cannot be right unless there was a flu breakout, mass suspensions, mass injuries, or confusion by the new coaching staff. ?

80 is a lot to travel, especially a plane flight, but I understand the reasons. We took 65 to Monroe and I would guess UCA traveled a similar number to Tulsa. 28 is a pretty small participation number, but that may just be offense and defense, and not counting special teams. We usually play 22-25 on defense alone. But either way, I don't think it mattered whether they were at home or on the road as to how many kids they played. They would have traveled twice as many as the reported participation list. If they left some difference makers at home, that's on them, or either they were injured or suspended. Also, you can't simply go by the participation report on the boxscore. Those are preliminary and often times inaccurate. You officially go by what is submitted to the conference office and then to the NCAA.

We may have taken more but I was going by the participation list in the box score. I really don't want to look up every play so after watching a starting WR play on special teams and get hurt I have no idea the actual number but it didn't seem like many more. Doesn't matter. It was a pay game anyway. Onto next week!

Gotcha. I was just confused as to why it would make a difference whether you were home or away. Coaches typically don't make a habit of leaving difference makers at the house when they travel.
