What happened to Broadnax?
Not a good sign when a new guys passes up the previous starter as well as the highly touted youngster.
How good is Davis and how good will the Redbirds be?

I'm not too high on Ill State right now. They lost a lot on the defensive side IIRC. Good RB coming back. They will probably beat someone they shouldn't and lose some that make you shake your head.

Agree with your comments. I am both excited AND leary about this team. Believe this Qb change adds more POTENTIAL upside to ISU’s season but certainly ISU is an enigma at this point. The Redbirds could truly be very good or just a 500 team. Lots of good pieces (players and coaching) to work with but they need to come together and IF they do look out. Too bad they do not start out with some quality opponents so that they can evaluate/learn very early where they stand and practice on improving. Playing St Xavier (WTF) as an opener could give them a false perspective about where they stand....I personally believe you don’t learn anything in any sports via beating up on inferior competition. This is one team to keep any eye on.

We've been told, even going to back to Roberson being on campus, that Kolbe was the future. He was THE man. A star.
Also been told that he wasn't the giant let down and extremely meh, on a good day, QB that well all saw the last few years. We just didn't know enough about ISUr. It was everyone elses fault. Bad WR. Bad OL. Bad coaching. Now all of a sudden a new guy comes in and takes his job he's had for 2.5 years?
Either the new guy is god, or Kolbe simply wasn't all that good.

agree almost completely with 007 .. except for this, our offense will likely be very strong this year and far more consistent than the last 2 seasons, which were very up and down. I've reported on AGS before, Spack fired 3 offensive coaches and pushed out a 4th (OC/QB, OL, WR, RB coaches all gone) .. started by bringing back our OC from 2014-15 who unexpectedly resigned for family reasons in June 2016, which forced Spack to promote from within, which did not work out at all .. prior OC was not qualified for this level, nor did he have the temperament. So former OC Beathard was rehired and consensus view this very favorably .. also feel like we did very well replacing the other 3 .. only going to miss 1 of the 4 in my opinion .. but OC change was big upgrade.
So i'm confident the offense will be very strong, regardless of whether they stay with new QB Davis (Memphis transfer, RS JR) or go back to SR QB Kolbe .. mixed feelings on how that went down, but they love QB Davis upside and pocket presence. And last season, our OL group endured loss of 4.5 starters plus 2 injuries to 2 new starters .. this year we return 4.5 starters, plus got a nice transfer from U of I who will start .. so our OL problems from a year ago should be solved. Still some questions at WR, solid at TE, but we are loaded at RB ... not just Robinson; Smith is a beast, and watch for a guy named Birch this year. I think we're going to over-power lot of teams with run game.
Defense is big question mark .. so far so good reloading, but very few proven guys. We will be very big and fast enough (for big) .. LBers are NFL size, plus we have 325 NT anchoring the middle who Spack loves. DBs are also nice size, but remain to be seen how well they cover .. Spack has twice rebuilt his defenses successfully after losing a lot .. he did it from 2013 to 2014, and then from 2010 to 2011 .. just a question of how long before this new group figures it out .. pretty sure it will be the biggest defense he's built.
Special teams should be good to very good, except new kicker and punter have to prove themselves.
As for NAIA game ... no one in Redbird Nation likes this one bit. It was a budgetary decision and AD sat on his hands .. 2017 was down revenue year due to no FBS game (thanks Barry Alvarez), plus just 5 home games, and we had to fly to NAU. So our AD was trying to save money and refused to give up home date and panicked putting St Xavier on schedule. This could prove to be huge mistake if we're sitting 7-4 come selection time. All eyes will turn to AD if we don't get in.

Kollmorgen simply couldn't get touched without sustaining a concussion. He wasn't benched due to play. He was benched because in the first 3 years (redshirt season) he sustained 7 concussions. By halfway through his junior season you could just see his brain didn't function anymore.
Oddly enough - Saywer still has better stats than Jake.

So here is Sophomore Kolbe's 2016 passing results for MVFC games .. pretty "meh" season, huh ? Hair below 2nd in QBR .. 3 picks in 239 passes, 17 to 3 TD to Pick ratio. No one else was close in tha area. Same guy who led us in win over 7-5 Northwestern ranked #35 by Massey.

2016 we ran Bailey out onto the field. He wasn't a QB by 99% of triple option teams standards. There isn't a single UNI fan that will defend anything about Bailey. He was atrocious by standards that even atrocious standards would find atrocious. No one wanted him to play except the coach. UNI fans spent years calling for him to be benched. Not selling his as the next big deal.
And if you go to 2012 - Sawyer's freshman season
1. Kollmorgen, Sawyer-UNI Fr 11 185-313-8 2450 21 141.9
2. Brown,Matt-ILS Sr 13 272-439-12 3370 27 141.3

8. Vander Maten,J.-USD So 11 151-268-7 1662 7 111.8
9. Perish, Mike-INS So 11 155-280-8 1615 10 109.9
10. Glaser,Ashton-MSU Jr 11 116-210-12 1221 2 9 5 . 8
If you look at 2013 Saywer was there at 140 again, but started missing games due to concussions. As I said - his brain became complete mush from a able to play football stand point. He simply couldn't do it anymore. He still got trotted out in 2014 but was forced to split time. He lost his starting job by week 4 and of the 9 games he's credited as playing in probably actually truly played 4 total games. Watching him was like watching a movie where robots start to lose their power source. They keep trying, but the movement is just slow and eventually just completely fails.
He wasn't benched for another player because he didn't meet expectations. He was pulled because it wasn't safe for him to be out there anymore.

At the time, I heard lot of complaints about Farley's offensive incompetence for not staying with Kollmorgen longer. He had some up and down games for sure.
And yes, Kolbe fell off in 2017 for sure .. but there was so much wrong with our offense that year, which you dismiss as if you would actually know .. because you like to troll.
But here is Kolmorgan in 2013 .. couldn't get MVFC only stats from archive prior to 2014

I was not inferring anything about him being benched. I was mainly pointing out that UNI QB performances aren't always a direct reflection on that QB. UNI is well known for having trouble with their handling of QB position .. I have heard many many derogatory statements about Farley and offensive coaches over many years from many UNI fans.
So I made the same excuses about our OC the past 2 years, and that our WRs and OL struggled badly (all 100% true .. but again, you always know better ... or are just trolling .. again) and suddenly you come at me as if UNI hasnt been complaining about their offensive inconsistencies due to coaching for years. I never came at UNI fans for making excuses ... ever.
That was my point for bringing up Kollmorgen .. at the time he was being benched, many UNI fans were complaining about Farley and offensive coaches being inept on offense. So what the hell is the difference with me ripping my OC .. and acknowledging our WRs sucked and our OL was inexperienced ??

Clenz .. now admit Kolbe's 2016 MVFC numbers caught you by surprise .... and more than a little ?? And he did this with a sh-tty OC and while enduring the 2nd most sacks with 25 in 8 games .. he admittedly struggled to feel the pocket in 2016, but still managed to put up nice passing stats.
Come on .. you can do it.

Broadnax moves to CB/Safety. Will likely see some playing time in Nickel situations.
Kolbe has always been more of a check down QB. The lack of arm strength to make certain throws has always bothered some fans. Also holds the ball too long and takes too many sacks. I won’t rule him out completely, we may see a platoon situation at some point this season.
Just from what I saw yesterday Davis looks to be the more confident QB and that may make all the difference right now.
