Derek Moore is a stud. I hope he can win his weight class. We sent 5 guys to nationals this year, the most ever to come out of UC Davis. Our 3rd place finish in the Pac 10 is also the higest ever.

Looks like the Ags are starting to become a force in wrestling!

While Lehigh doesn't have any seeds,we are sending seven, which isn't bad in a transition year. IMO, Matt Ciasulli at 141 should be seeded; and a couple guys like Fisk at 125, Seth Ciasulli at 133 and Craig at 184 could be someone's nightmare in the first round.
I'm leaving early Thurs. a.m. for the Motor City to attend the Tournament. Will be there in my dark Brown Lehigh Wrestling T-Shirt!xthumbsupx

I was wondering how many qualifiers N. Dakota State would manage in their first year. Looks like 3 if I counted correctly.

3 also for fledgling Bucknell.

1 for S. Dakota State

I don't seem to remember N. Colorado last year. Were they eligible?

What is the status of ODU football? They have 1 or 2 qualifiers.

Never really paid attention to it before this year.

ngineer

Yes, it's double elimination. After first loss, loser drops into the consolation brackets to try and wrestle back for third. all-american status is given to the top 8 placewinners in each weight.
Lehigh has 4 of their 7 wrestlers wrestling back in the consolations. Craig lost in second round to #4 seed Tyrell from Michigan. We really got hammered with bad draws. Even our top wrestler, EIWA champ Ciasulli at 141 had to wrestle the #1 seeded wrestler, which made no sense to me. Matt was ranked #14 in country. He started his comeback this evening with a nice 9-2 win. Losing the first round and coming back for third place is very impressive. Guy has to wrestle 8 bouts in 2 1/2 days.
Nakasone (157), Craig (184) and Weibel (Hwt) are still alive as well. Weibel pinned his opponent from Clarion tonight in his first wrestle back. He had a very good showing against the #4 seed frm Northwestern in the first round. Lost 10-6 but was losing by only riding time when he tried a throw and slipped to be taken to his back for a four pt move.
I'm hoping we can grab a couple all-americans before all is said and one.

After the first two rounds Thursday, two of NDSU’s wrestlers are finished, but Ryan Adams at 149 pounds does have a chance to place.

“Ryan is only a freshman, so it’s great to have him here to get over the nerves and all the hoopla,” said coach Bucky Maughan. “We’re just moving up from Division II and this is the first year we are eligible to come here, so the fact that he’s getting some experience and has three more years, we can do a lot better.”

Adams lost his first-round match, 11-2, to No. 12 seed Dan Vallimont of Penn State, before going into the consolation bracket and winning 6-4 over Sam Alvarenga of Virginia Military Institute.

Cal Poly's Vasquez to the quarterfinals.

From the SLO Tribune

Cal Poly senior wrestler Darrel Vasquez was the lone Mustang to advance in the championship bracket of the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Auburn Hills, Mich., on Thursday night.

The 133-pounder recorded a win by fall over Wyoming’s Cory Vombar and an 11-3 decision over Zach Tanelli of Wisconsin.

Vasquez will face Penn State’s Jake Stayer in today’s quarterfinals.

Cal Poly’s Matt Monterio, Dave Roberts and Cody Parker each lost their first matches but remain alive with wins in the wrestleback (consolation bracket).

Monteiro suffered an early loss to Maryland’s Hudson Taylor but rebounded to pick up an 11-5 victory. The win helped him advance into today’s action where he faces Joel Flaggert of Oklahoma, who Monteiro beat 7-5 in December.

Parker’s early loss and follow-up win earned him a match today against Missouri’s Mark Ellis.

Roberts advances in the wrestleback after claiming a late-second victory with a takedown as time expired in the third period.

When you guys get back from Detroit, or finish watching on TV, I have a few questions.

My grandson started wrestling last year , he is now 8 and his improvement this year is huge.

He is 70 lbs and tall. Finished his season this year with 8 consecutive pins.
The local high school coach (who has a great program) says he has real potential.

I just got interested in wrestling last year and his dad did also so we don't know a whole lot.

Some questions:

Work at it all year or just wait till next season? He is entering a couple of Open Tournaments next month.

Wrestling camp or not? Is he too young?

Should he go to "open mats" at a neigboring High School?

Will the fact that he may grow to 6' 4" or so by high school hinder him in wrestling?

And finally, I heard from somebody that Doctors have said wrestling hampers growth, if started at a young age?

I'm sure I will have more questions as they pop into my head, I appreciate any comments.

Awesome sport by the way.

15,000 people at the palace tonight - hopefully at least as many people will be there tomorrow night.

Yes, I was one of them. This tournament has been great from a fan's perspective. Wide open--alot of upsets. 16 of 20 finalists tomorrow night will be from different schools, which say alot about how parity is occuring;although tournament team depth still remains with the big powers in terms of team title hunts.
Lehigh has performed as good as could be expected. We suffered from some horrendous draws on the seedings. Our senior and EIWA champ, though unseeded was ranked around 14 and, yet, had to start off wrestling the #1 guy, so as a team, we lost out on some championship advancement points. Unfortunatey, we couldn't pull off any upsets this year with guys knocking off higher seeded wrestlers in the championship bracket. This, hopefully, will be agood experience for our youngsters who return next year. Just qualifying for Nationals is tough in itself.

As for HLecter's
question about how much emphasis to put on youth wrestling. Pascal Perri, one of the sports legendary officials, spoke at Lehigh's dinner last month and stressed how much he thinks 'pee wee' wrestling hurts kids because of too much pressure at young ages. Going to camps and clinics to learn techniques is okay, but entering all sorts of tournaments that really don't mean anything at that level puts too much pressure to win before the kids even know enough. By the time they get to high school many are 'burned out' mentally and it's no long 'fun'. Keeping in mind that wrestling is not a 'fun' thing--it is demanding both physically and mentally. One cannot enjoy anything unless they learn to do it right. It's why so many of us are frustrated with golfing. Most of us just go out and hackaway without ever really learning the craft. Same way with wrestling. If a kid starts getting involved in a lot of competition before he really has learned proper techniques, he's being set up for failure. He may win for a while purely on strength or quickness. But when he faces truly good wrestlers, he will be hammered because it is technique that separates the great from the good. So you want to instill interest, yet at the same time, not become what Lehigh's coach calls "a helicopter" parent--one who's always hovering over the child and pushing him one way or the other. Remember, it's his life, not yours. I wrestled in high school. Not good enough for college, but loved the sport. My son began wrestling in junior high and did well, but he also loved his music and karate. He chose not to continue wrestling because, while he liked it, he didn't love it enough to sacrifice his other interests, and that was fine by me, and I thought a mature decision. You only live once, and too many kids are pushed into what their parents want, as oppossed to what they, themselves, love. And then, 10 years later, they lament that they never did x,y, or z when they were younger and had the opportunity.
So, it is a balancing act. As for the doctor. Wrestling does not stunt growth. However, cutting weight when so young must be prohibited. There's no reason for it, and it could cause detrimental effect on growth. I never cut weight until high school, and even then no more than 10 pounds. Once you go beyond that you can start sacrificing nutrients, energy and weakening the immune system when done in conjunction with strenous workouts. It's a great sport, because it teaches self-reliance and diiscipline, but also within a team atmosphere. People who learned to wrestle also learn to deal with a lot of adversity. The 'deal with it'. Just like 'dealing with' life.
As for his height. It could be big advantage. From what Ihave seen tall wrestlers have significant advantage in leverage and actually 'enveloping' their opponent. So I dont consider that a problem at all. I would consider sending him to a teaching/technique camp for about a week. One that emphasizes instruction and not so much competition. Of course, kids always want to cpmpete, and 'some' is good, but at that age the primary goal is to learn and have fun.
Our coach at Lehigh runs an excellent camp with that emphasis. My son thoroughly enjoyed his time there. Hope all of this provides some perspective. Good luck!

Gable is a legend in Iowa. Sanderson, however, did what Gable could not do and went undefeated in his career. I predict that Sanderson will become a huge success at Iowa State.

I actually kept my 2 football playing sons away from the game till they were in 7th grade because I was concerned about "burnout" so that is a valid point.

They both ended up with D-1 scholarships so maybe we did something right.

Man, I hate that I saw this thread so late...Chattanooga had a SoCon record 9 wrestlers go to Nationals and our wrestling messageboard at mocfans has been following every match.

...and dad gum it, we had 6 wrestlers only 1 win away from AA status Friday morning...and 5 of the 6 lost. xbawlingx

Oh well, we still have one left (Matt Keller 133)...not bad considering it is Chris Bono's first year at the helm. He took over the program in the middle of the summer and had only a grad asst as his entire "coaching staff".

Bright days ahead for wrestling in the South...particularly in Chattanooga! Best of luck to all.

Well, just rolled in a little whileago after the Finals. Went to an Irish bar somewhere near Pontiac. My old alma mater finally had 'one of those years'. Just not enough horses this year. We knew it would be a rebuilding time after our great run of the past few years, but still, one doesn't expect not to be rooting for a couple of your guys on Saturday. First time since 1996 that Lehigh had no wrestlers going on the final day. Our 10 points was also the lowest since then. Parity has definitely arrived in collegiate wrestling as 16 of the 20 finalists tonight were from different teams. Still the old standby powers were still there at the end fighting for the team title as most of us smaller schools don't have the depth of all 10 weights to have such a dream, although we still fancy a day in the not too distant future when we might pull something like that off. With the increased parity, it might be possible. Schools like Hofstra, Cornell, Harvard, American, Rider,.Drexel, Edinboro, Navy, Chattanooga, Penn and UC Davis all made some noise during the 3 days, and one would expect that noise will get louder in the coming years.
All in all an enjoyable 3 days in Detroit.
