March Madness has begun!

UCLA is the next storied program to fall to us in the first round!

At least I hope so. Saw an interesting stat. Weber State is 2-3 in their last three NCAA appearances. Those three losses were by an average of 5.7 points.

Ben Howland should know that the alma mater comes before any personal glory. xrotatehx

Hmmm....a 15 vs. 2 game where the coach of the 15 faces his alma mater?

Sounds like us two years ago when former UK star Travis Ford led the Colonels into the dance to face the Wildcats. For the record UK used the free throws from our desperation fouls to pad their margin up to 8 points in that one.

I think (hope) Penn will beat Texas A & M and Holy Cross will beat SIU. And I hope Niagara beats FAMU. That 64/65 play-in game is a travesty to both institutions.

I think the 2007 field was a committee saying "We don't want our BIG conferences upstaged by the little guys again." Just six mid-major teams getting in the field. Unbelievable in a year filled with such parity. I don't give a rip about teams like Stanford, Arkansas, Illinois and Texas Tech. None of these teams should be in. The tournament would be much better if those four were replaced by Appalachian State, Drexel, Air Force or Vermont. App State was 5-2 against the top 100 and beat ACC co-champ Virginia, Vanderbilt (which beat defending national champ and No. 1 seed Florida), VCU and Davidson, teams that are all in the tournament. ASU was 20-4 after center Donte Minter joined the club and had the fourth toughest non-conference schedule in the country. Drexel played all-comers, beating most and had an RPI of 30. Air Force was ranked in the top 25 basically all season and crushed Stanford by almost 40 points. Vermont has proven itself at the NCAA level before and just because the Catamounts stumble barely in the final of their conference championship game, they are out. I would take 10 teams from the NIT over about a half-dozen schools in the NCAAs.

I totally agree. To expand on your point, the selection committee also stiffed the powerhouse "little guys" by having them play each other so early (Nevada/Creighton, SIU/Holy Cross, Butler/ODU). Imagine if Butler, Nevada, or SIU REALLY were seeded where they should be in the 3 line or maybe even the 2 line.

The point is well taken that the NCAA tournament would be a million times better if you swapped out the horrible no-chance teams from the last four at-large spots (Texas Tech, Arkansas, Stanford, Illinois) and instead added Appalachian State, Drexel, Missouri State and Vermont.

Did I mention that I read one columnist calling Stanford, Illinois, Arkansas and Texas Tech BCS teams? xnonono2x xnonono2x xnonono2x

Better watch him good, because the Red Raiders figure to be one and done. They won't be in Winston-Salem long. I was hoping to be covering the tournament in Winston-Salem, if Appalachian State had gotten into the field and was placed there.

Rank Conference Avg. RPI Avg. SOS SOS Rank
9 Western Athletic 0.5244 0.5224 9
24 Big Sky 0.4553 0.4577 26

That's actually quite a bit better. And for the Sac fans who try to claim the BSC is better than the Big West, the BWC is ranked 8 spots higher than the BSC. I'm sure that's well outside of whatever margin of error one thinks the RPI may have

And Louisville's ranked 16th in the country and was playing basically at home (and at 9:30 am pacific time). But if you can judge Stanford's worth by this one game, then same goes for Drexel, who lost at home to a team that finished 5-11 in the ACC

Well at least Stanford is gone. They shouldn't have even been in there.

And App. State fans still feeling snubbed, your team didn't deserve to be in the tournament this year. There were about 10-15 teams above you on that waiting list. Put it to rest.

I know why I didn't take Butler... they CANNOT score. I had taking bad-shooting teams in the NCAA tournament. When you pick them and you lose, you feel like an idiot.

Butler: could be an Elite 8 team, or a first-round ouster. Impossible to say on Wednesday which will show up; looking like the "ousted" right now.

There are ten teams more deserving of a bid than Appalchain State.

Appalachian State played in a horribly weak conference. They lost to Elon...ELON. And RPI of 298. You lost to one of the worst teams in all of Division I basketball. NC Greensboro and Furman were really bad losses as well. And, you didn't get to the championship game of your weak conference.

I'm all of mid-majors, but Appalachian State didn't earn it. period. And it's irritating seeing people make it seem they were oh so close, when there were several more deserving teams in line. I am probably not liked for this opinion, but who really cares.

That was just like most Super Bowls. A whole lot of hype for the final 11 seconds, then nothing. Just a near turnover and a meaningless basket.

it is a sad day indeed when UNC-CH wins an athletic competition. However, their win today has been tempered somewhat by a Dook loss.

All is not lost!

The Heels are gonna have to stay focused for 40 minutes, or it will be a long day Saturday against Michigan State.

Not much you can do when you are down 4 and there are 10.8 seconds left in the game.xoopsx

Yeah, this wasn't a great day to watch college basketball for me.

False hope, I guess. It would have been a closer game if we actually had size and could rebound. Still would have lost by a healthy margin.

Come on Tech! I really hope they beat UNLV, I need to seperate myself from the rest of the pool I am in.

Went 14-2 yesterday and a couple of people had Albany beating UVA. Why I have no idea.
