CONWAY | As the Coastal Carolina football team ran through spring drills Friday, a sound system loudly belted out Eric Clapton's version of "I Shot The Sheriff."
It was an appropriate tune for this year's Chanticleers. After 36 senior sheriff's shot their eligibility last season, it will be up to second- and third-string deputies to carry on the job.
"This is going to be a good, challenging year for us as a team and a staff," said CCU coach David Bennett, who pumped up the volume to emphasize concentration amid chaos.
"With all those seniors gone everybody's thinking, 'What are y'all going to do?'"
And so are the coaches. Bennett recalls the day they met to erase the seniors' names
