If you subtract the allocated portions of the revenue (student fees and school funding), since the remaining funds are what the athletic department generates itself, you get a different look... here is that Top 10:

I also compared these non allocated revenues to the rest of the G5, and Montana and NDSU have larger "non allocated" revenues than all the teams in the MAC, CUSA, and everyone in the Sun Belt (except Arkansas State who generated $26.8M. Largest non allocated revenue team in the MAC was Western Michigan at $13.6M, and the largest non allocated revenue team in CUSA was Southern Miss at $15.2M. Also, the #2 non allocated Sun Belt team was UL Lafayette at $15.5M. For the most part the MWC and AAC teams have larger non allocated revenues except for a few outliers.

So the argument for moving to the FBS to get additional revenue appears to not holdup too well if we are talking about CUSA, MAC or Sunbelt.

I won’t get into it here unless really wanted but UNIs subsidy number is WAAAY off thanks to the way the BOR forces UNI to account for certain things compared to other universities. Our “real” number is closer to NDSU at 25-30%

I think as NoVABison has done, it's only fair to strip out the allocated portion of their revenues, so that we have an apples-to-apples comparison. Then let's subtract the expenses to see how all of these schools are now KILLING IT, financially, since they made the move to 'the big-time' (cough, cough, hack, hack, cough) level of College Football. And by "KILLING IT," I mean hemorrhaging cash FROM their Athletics Departments. All of you Finance & Accounting experts, please correct me if I'm interpreting this incorrectly.

Definitely interesting stuff. Not having done any research myself (also not going to do any and not expecting anyone to for me), I would think the real info I would want would be a before and after for each of these FBS schools. Just because Montana and NDSU seem to be in a good spot, doesn't mean those teams didn't improve their financials with the move up.

A cursory look at the data, and knowing when teams like App State, Ga Southern, CCU, etc moved up, you can see that they are not increasing it from big dollar media contracts... because, there aren't any big media contracts for the Sun Belt, MAC, and CUSA. Instead, these schools increased there budgets by either significant increases in student fees, or school funds (which ultimately came from state funding), or a combination of both. Massive increases in spending all to say that an institution plays football in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Doesn't really seem worth it... most of these teams become "FBS level fodder" for P5 teams to play at home for an easy win in the OOC...
