According to Athlon:
https://athlonsports.com/college-football/dominating-defensive-players-fcs-conference-2018
Glad to see Samford's Ahmad Gooden on that list.xnodx BTW, Samford just announced that former 4**** LB Jaleel Laguines is transferring to the Bulldogs from the UGA Bulldogs. :)

Is it already that time of year where Samford starts announcing their big school transfers?

A Georgetown player gets mentioned!! They've had some very good defensive players over the years so not a HUGE surprise....

Maybe THIS guy will be the transfer from "Big School U" that actually makes difference. :)

Last year's LB xfer(Smith from Ole Miss) wasn't bad against your Paladins as he had 5 tackles with 2.5 TFL for -6 yards.xcoffeex

Of course, how one player did one night against Furman does not actually matter to the overall point.
Smith is a good example. He was a highly recruited high school player. Rarely played at Ole Miss. Transfers to Samford, does not start a single game, and finishes 12th on the team in tackles (as a linebacker). Basically, he's a career backup.
Point being, some of these guys have a bunch of stars as high school players, but really are not much more than reserve players on an FCS squad. Samford seems to pick up one or two such players every season.

PF, from reading your posts, I am constantly amazed at your infatuation with Samford Football. Maybe you're a pocket Samford Fan. xlolx

He doesn't and probably won't have the gaudy tackle numbers a LB needs to be mentioned as the best in the conference or nationally but I'd put this guy up against any LB in the country over the next 3 years and he'd compare pretty favorably in terms of talent I think:
http://gobison.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7987&path=football
Jabril Cox - LB - #42

2017 stat line: 75 tackles, 13 TFLs, 4.5 sacks, 1 FF, 3 FRs, 4 PDs, 1 INT
And btw, that was as a part time starter and a freshman.

Kid is a freak of nature and had it not been for DeLuca, Farley, and Taylor, he would have challenged for 1st team MVFC.

If you read my posts, you know that I pretty well raise the same question with every time someone brings up a transfer regardless of the school.
I am a pretty firm believer that a guy can have a bunch of stars in high school, get a big college scholarship by virtue of being a purely better athlete than his competition, and really not be that good of a football player. D1 football has a way of weeding those players out pretty quickly.

I agree with this. however, the xfer should at least add needed depth to the position. Smith did just that, playing with LBs such as Shaheed Salmon who is, at least for now, on an NFL roster. There are a few exceptions, of course. QB Ingle Martin being THE prime example. I remember that dude out running everything we had in our secondary.

Of course, in Martin's day, Samford wasn't near the quality they are now.
I was trying to recall some of Martin's games against Samford, but to be honest, they run together with Gardner Webb in my memory. In those days, Samford and GWU wore basically identical uniforms down to the bulldog on the helmet.
I have some memories of those games, though I think I tend to confuse some of the games between Furman, Samford, and Gardner Webb. In those days, Samford and GWU always appeared on Furman's schedule and their uniforms were nearly identical (including the bulldog on the helmet).
This was the game I thought was Samford, but it appears to be GWU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD1nJL0UNCk
235 pound Martin outruns the GWU defense like they are playing in sand.

Cox is a stud. I think the Buchanan Award this year will be between Rozeboom, Cox, and Bridges.

Absolutely no issues with Samford being the favorite in the SoCon, but to not rank Furman in its preseason poll, which Athlon has not despite having Elon #10, bothers me...having a Villanova team that as 5-6 last year ranked is a proble...higher than Samford I think...Furman en$ed Elon’s season and has one less starter returning...#comeonman

I think Rozeboom winning the award would be a nice twist on the season.

I think Rozeboom will have ankle opportunity... errr... ample opportunity, to show he's the best defender in the nation.

I think they had Elon 10 and Samford 12.
Of course, Furman returns pretty much everyone, ended Elon’s season (frankly, should have beaten them earlier in the season too), lost to Samford on the road by 6 (again, the refs might have had a say in that outcome).
I don’t have an objection to ranking those two there, but there’s no rational argument for not having Furman right next to them. Unless I am missing something, Furman was playing football the second week of the post season while the other two were watching from the couch.

Funny thing about defenses is that it usually takes 11 players to be any good.

I remember in NDSU's D2 days, Texas A&I (now called Texas A&M Kingsville) had players like:
http://www.profootballhof.com/players/darrell-green/
http://www.profootballhof.com/players/gene-upshaw/
http://www.profootballhof.com/players/john-randle/
The Javelinas had some insane talent... in addition to the 3 NFL HOFers I listed above, they had 8 first round draft picks. Didn't really translate to great defenses though.
