WTG Lady Griz! The only I-AA to have a team in the women's rankings. ODU, Delaware and JMU are just outside.

Robin Selvig is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history. He's had chances to go elsewhere, but thank God his first love is Montana. I've heard arguments that is doesn't take as much to win against BSC competition, and I'd have to agree that that's true (that's no offense to the Big Sky, I just mean that the argument is that it's a MM conference, and any good team could dominate). However, it is our conference, and I'm glad for it.

I stole part of a quote from citygriz over on eGriz that I think does go a ways toward showing that the Lady Griz really are a good team, now and historically under Selvig:

"...all of which serves as the backdrop for the phenomonan that we know as the lady griz. much as i praised selvig's willingness to go out and play anybody in the country, i was frankly skeptical of his all-time record (35 wins against pac 10 teams, three against big ten teams including one in the ncaa tournament against wisconsin on their floor, and all-time series advantages over brigham young, colorado, gonzaga, iowa state, memphis, nevada, boise state, notre dame, oklahoma, rice, st. john's, san francisco, santa clara, syracuse, utah, utah state, washington state and wyoming, not to mention every team in the current big sky conference...".

citygriz don't use caps much. :D

I just want to take my hat off to Robin Selvig. Griz fans are in his debt.

The 2006-07 season marks Robin Selvig's 29th year as coach of the Lady Griz and his 34th year of affiliation with University of Montana athletics. Selvig was a four-year member of the Grizzly basketball team (1970-71 to 1973-74), coached the men's freshman team in 1974-75 and was named UM's women's basketball coach June 6, 1978.

After nearly three decades on the UM sideline, the depth of Selvig's numbers are monumental. In 28 seasons, he has posted 26 winning seasons, 24 20-win seasons and 645 wins. He has coached the Lady Griz to 20 national tournament appearances (16 NCAAs) and 19 conference championships, for which he has been recognized as the conference coach of the year 16 times. He has coached one all-American, 10 conference MVPs, 72 all-conference selections and 87 academic all-conference players.

Selvig's .774 career winning percentage and 645 victories both rank him among the top 10 winningest active Division I women's basketball coaches.

Upon his hiring in 1978, Selvig inherited a team that had gone 11-27 in the two seasons prior to his arrival. Success came quickly for the Lady Griz program under Selvig's guidance and has continued with few interruptions for 28 years.

That success has placed his name among the woman's game's most recognized figures in coaching today, and he recently joined the rarified air of Kentucky's Adolph Rupp, UCLA's John Wooden, Kansas's Phog Allen and North Carolina's Dean Smith.

When Montana defeated Portland State on March 6, 2004, Selvig reached 600 career wins, doing so in just 772 games. That made the Lady Griz coach the sixth-fastest coach in NCAA history to reach No. 600, in all NCAA divisions, men's or women's, trailing the likes of Rupp (704), Tennessee's Pat Summitt (734) and Wooden (755), but reaching the milestone faster than Smith (773) and Allen (780).

There is a serious disparity of talent on the East Coast vs. the West Coast in women's basketball. The Griz are one of only three teams ranked in the top 25 that are located west of Texas!

Congrats LG!

How ironic, since most Griz fans felt it was the MEN who had a shot this year, given their performance in the tourney last year....

Oh well, at least they're still playin'.

CONGRATS to LADY Griz!!

Still need to win that Big Sky Tourney to get to the NCAAs? Or is record going to get you in even if beat?

SDSU Lady Jacks, have closed out a regular season 23-5, including wins over NCAA teams of Middle TN St., and the reg season MoValley champs, So. Ill. Not eligible for the NCAA's, SDSU goal is to win the WNIT, but to also host a round or two of the WNIT's.

Great luck to those FCS teams in the NCAA's - JMU, Del, UofMT, So Ill, & SWAC/MEAC reps.

it's unsure at this time exactly what would happen. They say if they win the tourney they could be a 9 seed, but then there is speculation that if they don't they could be sitting out. I would rather not take any chances, and hope they can just win the AQ.

I believe that the entire team but one is from the great state of Montana. Not many other programs can say that.

Well, there's only so many women bb players IN the state of Montana, so it'd be hard for many other teams to say their entire team is from Montana. :eyebrow:  ;) ;) ;)

They should, CBS and ESPN have them at around a 10 seed playing 7 seed cal. I guess we shall see tonight!

Big Sky with two bids - that'd be cool. Disapointed that NAU is not getting the auto.

Half-full/half-empty season for both men's and women's team - Lost in conference finals, beat Montana in the semis. Beating the Griz is a small consolation prize ;)

I actually thought the lady Blue Hens were fortunate to get a bid to the NCAAs. It appears they were the last team selected (they are a twelve seed and all the other the other 12-16 seeds were auto qualifiers).

I think it is the first time the CAA has placed three teams in the women's tournament (ODU and JMU being the other two).

Regardless, best of luck to the lady Hens!!!!!

As Portland State found out in football, if you leave your fate in the hands of the committee, you may not like the results. Best to just win if you have the chance.

here here. The LG should have beaten NAU and will be kicking themselves for awhile. But it is time to forget it and win the WNIT!
