Travis,
FWIW, I saw some of your comments and felt a different perspective was needed.
Brandeis is in Waltham, MA not Maine. Even when I started UNH in the late 60's, UNH still played Brandeis, MIT, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Middlebury, etc. in many sports. It is an extremely good academic school that plays in a D-III league with a mind boggling geographic footprint. From their web site:
Brandeis competes in the University Athletic Association (UAA), a unique Division III affiliation. The Judges' conference opponents include the University of Rochester, New York University, Emory University (Atlanta), Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh), Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland), the University of Chicago and Washington University (St. Louis), giving Brandeis athletes a chance to see some of the most exciting cities in the country on a regular basis.
Holy Cross in 1982 was a completely different program than today. This was close to the end of their era when they played Boston College in their season ending game. And the Beagles actually went to Worcester every other year too!! Fitton Field has a capacity of 22K for a reason. One of the Patriot guys probably has a better handle on the details, but IIRC they played a major Eastern schedule back in those days.

They actually outscored all opponents between 1936 and 1939 1032-84, posted 27 shutouts, and lost only 2 conference games, put up a 34-2-3 record, and played in two "no game designation" bowls (they lost in 1939, making it an undefeated/unscored-on regular season). That's what all the bowls were called before the advent of Suzuki and Tostitos.

Probably because it was a two day drive to Boone ( or to Greenville depending on your perspective) :D

It had a lot to do with the fact that in 1971 App State gave out degrees that were almost worthless. App, WCU, and Marshall caused Richmond and William and Mary to leave the Socon because those schools did not want to associate with diploma mills.
