The Big Sky also uses the RPI in some tie breaking instances.

The OVC doesn't use RPI, it breaks ties by seeing how you did against the best team in the league, and so on down the line until the tie is broken.
I do have a friend who told me that the SEC will break some complcated multi-team ties in football using the BCS rank of the teams.

That's one of the Patriot League tiebreakers as well. First is head to head, but if the two teams split they go down the line. This year, Bucknell and Holy Cross finished 13-1, with their only loss to each other. So RPI is used to break the tie.

Very typical of tournament games. Teams tighten up and can't shoot. If you play a good zone, you've got a chance. That why ASU should be a big favorite. They play that 1-2-2 zone very well.

Awful game thus far. Davidson is SO tight you put a .... fill in the blanks. UTC has missed a lot of opportunities to build a big lead with a lot of dumb possessions. 20-14 UTC with 8:14 left in the half on a trey by Bridgewaters. UTC just got a steal and two more free throws. Mays hits both. 22-14 at the 8 minute mark.
Mr. C
March 1st, 2007, 02:45 PM
Halftime: Davidson 34, UTC 32. The Cats played terribly, but made a late run to get the lead after trailing by eight. UTC was dominating the offensive boards and out-hustling Davidson, but the Mocs couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, outside of little 5-9 guard Kevin Bridegewaters. Shooting percentages will be very low for the first half.

Both UNCG and Furman are enigmatic. Both teams have talent, but both have been up and down on the court. We've even seen that in the course of this game. Furman was up pretty big early and UNCG came back to take a 32-30 lead. POY Kyle Hines has 20 of UNCG's 32 points.

For hoop fans, here is Mr.C's coverage of the SoCon tourney from Thursday:
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.—Houston Fancher couldn’t have scripted a better scenario for his Appalachian State Mountaineers Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament if he had been a Hollywood screenwriter.
The Mountaineers might be the No. 2 seed in the tournament, but they established themselves as the team to beat at the North Charleston Coliseum with an impressive 78-59 victory over Western Carolina.
D.J. Thompson scored a team-high 15 points, but the plot line of this performance was balanced scoring and major contributions from the Mountaineer bench.
ASU had five players score nine or more points and Fancher received solid minutes from most of his roster, with 10 players getting between 10 and 28 minutes of playing time.
The Mountaineers will head into Friday night’s 8:30 p.m. semifinal with No. 3 College of Charleston as the freshest team in the field. Charleston used a second-half comeback to beat Georgia Southern 77-66.
Dontaye Draper scored 23 points to lead the Cougars (21-10) to the win. Donte Gennie had 15 for the Eagles (15-16).
“We were in trouble,” said College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins, whose team trailed 35-28 at the half. “We played with a lot of passion in the second half and the little guy (Draper) gave us a lift.”
Cremins will be facing a Mountaineers’ squad that is close to his heart. He got his start as a head coach at ASU from 1976-81.
“I love Appalachian State with all of my heart, but tomorrow we’re going to battle,” said Cremins. “The reason our RPI is so high is because of what Appalachian State has done this year.”
But College of Charleston, even playing in front of a hometown audience, will need to play two halves to stay competitive with a talented and experienced ASU club that has beaten the Cougars twice this season, 68-57 in Charleston and 67-56 in Boone.
“I’m really glad we were able to get a lot of rest for our kids,” said Fancher. “Our depth was absolutely the key tonight.”
No one epitomized that factor more than junior forward Doug McLaughlin-Williams, who came off the bench for a season-high 12 points and played an outstanding floor game with six rebounds, two steals and an assist on a spectacular outlet pass.
McLaughlin-Williams, who started every game as a sophomore before taking on a bench role this season, had been struggling with his shooting through much of the year. He had hit just two of his last 19 three-point shots before nailing 3-of-4 bonus bombs against WCU.
“We don’t have as many guys as they do,” said WCU freshman postman Nick Aldridge, who led all scorers with 24 points. “They kept throwing bodies at us. It got to us and wore us down.”
Western Carolina rode Aldridge’s hot hand to a 16-12 lead, seven minutes into the game. But then the Mountaineers hit the throttle to speed up the tempo for an 11-0 run that gave them a 23-16 lead and ASU never looked back.
On defense, Jeremy Clayton and McLaughlin-Williams combined to hold Aldridge in check for most of the night and the Catamounts didn’t have another consistent option on offense.
“Our defense has to be good for us to be good,” said Fancher.
And the Mountaineers’ defense was indeed sharp, holding the Catamounts to 37.5 percent shooting, 35 percent in the second half. Western Carolina hit just 2-of-16 three-point attempts.
“I thought Appalachian State took us out of anything offensively we wanted to do,” said WCU coach Larry Hunter. “Their pressure caused us a lot of problems.”
Appalachian State still led 34-27 at halftime and then used its platoons to wear the Catamounts out in the second half. The Mountaineers outscored WCU 49-14 off the bench, with Donte Minter and Eduardo Bermudez each scoring 11 points.
“I think that’s what makes us a championship contender,” said Thompson. “The other teams can’t key on anything. Our bench did good things for us tonight and contributed to the win a lot. In a tournament, it’s good to see good things out of the bench, because your stars don’t always play well.”
Two of ASU’s starters, Davis Bowne and Nathan Cranford were held scoreless, but the Mountaineers didn’t need them on this night.
In other action on Thursday afternoon, top-seeded Davidson struggled with its nerves before outlasting No. 8 Tennessee-Chattanooga 78-68 and No. 5 Furman overcame some late turnovers to hold off No. 4 UNC-Greensboro 73-71.
Stephen Curry and Jason Richards helped Davidson (27-4) get past a sluggish start with 20 points each. After shooting 34 percent in the first half, the Wildcats caught fire down the stretch.
Chattanooga had plenty of opportunities to establish control in the first half when it led by eight points, but 37.5 percent shooting and 22 turnovers killed the Mocs (15-18), who were led by Marcus Watts’ 13 points.
Trailing 32-30 at halftime after being scorched by 20 first-half points by UNCG’s Kyle Hines (33 points overall), Furman began to break the Spartans down inside. Forwards Moussa Diagne (16 points) and Robby Bostain (18 points) scored 21 of their 34 combined points in the second half.
Furman (15-15) built a 12-point, 62-50 lead with 4:36 remaining when Diagne dove across the floor to beat a UNCG player to the ball and flipped a pass to Stanley Jones for a resounding dunk.
But the Paladins made four turnovers in the next two minutes to let the Spartans climb back into the game. UNCG got to within two points three times in the final 25 seconds, but the Paladins made just enough free throws to hold on.
When Eric Webb clanked a pair of charity tosses with four seconds left, UNCG had one more chance. But a length-of-the-court, in-bounds pass to Hines was knocked away as the game ended.
Furman meets Davidson at 6 p.m. Friday, with the winner taking on Appalachian State or Charleston in the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Larry Hunter’s Western Carolina program’s search for a big man is over.
The Catamounts accepted a commitment from Atlanta (Ga.) Lakeside product Richie Gordon. The 6-foot-7 power forward pulled the trigger over the weekend.
“He’s a big active kid,” Inner Strength AAU coach Buck Jenkins said. “He’s a great defensive player and rebounder. He’ll run and make athletic plays. The main thing he’s got to work on is his offensive game and the other parts he has down pretty good.”
UNC-Greensboro, Wofford, Alabama A&M, Prairie View and Southern were his schools but none offered the chances for early success that WCU presented.
“The opportunity. He sees a chance where he can go there and help right away. They have a need for a player like him and he saw it as a good fit. He really enjoyed Coach Hunter.”

That's one of the needs WCU needed to fill. Now the Cats need to get some balance by recruiting a shooting guard. I think this is a program that is on the rise. Next season will be good for WCU, if they can develop another outside scoring threat.

Did you see the intentional foul C? None of the announcers saw it
Mr. C
March 2nd, 2007, 11:34 PM
The intentional foul was a terrible call in an otherwise exemplary-called game. Scott just reached out with one arm and hit the arm of Tony Scott. If it had been called at ANY other time in the game, there is NO way that Gary Maxwell would have made that call. As an college official myself (volleyball), you CAN'T judge intent by reading someone's mind. Of course Scott was trying to foul. But there were dozens of other fouls in the game where people's intent was to foul to stop a basket. Do you call those intentional fouls? Maxwell needs to have a better understanding of the reason that rule is in the book. The game was TOO good for the rest of the 45 minutes to ruin it with that call. Demetrius Scott said it was a bad call and no one had a better view of it than him.
But what cost ASU the game was going 16-of-28 from the foul line. If they make one more free throw, they win.
Bobby Cremins was very strong in his comments that ASU deserves a shot at the NCAA tournament as an at-large team, as was Houston Fanchier. ASU won the most games in school history, was 25-7, had the fourth toughest out-of-conference strength of schedule in the country and went 5-2 against the top 100 teams, ALL away from home. They lost by two in OT to a team that was basically playing a home game, just 10 minutes from their campus. If the Southern Conference ever deserved an at-large bid it is this year.

If Winthrop gets the auto-bid by winning the Big South tomorrow, ASU gets my vote for the at large selection from the SoCon. My guess is, they will make the NIT field if they don't go to the dance.
Winthrop is my favorite since my terriers did their one and done routine in the SoCon. I'll probably take the boys to see the Eagles play VMI for the Big South title.

Definitely, Winthrop is the feel good story around the Carolinas. Gonna be backing the Eagles myself.
But I usually cheer for all the Carolina schools once they hit the dance, other than Dook. :p
As far as App..what a disappointing way to go out. NCAA and probably NIT gone. :bawling:

Craig Littlejohn, the chairman of the selection committee, told ASU that the Mountaineers will be one of the teams considered for an at-large berth. If ASU is disappointed there, the NIT will definitely be calling. ASU's season isn't done yet (as I told D.J. Thompson tonight after the game).

I really don't think the Mountaineers will have a shot at an at-large bid. The SoCon is just way too weak a basketball conference to warrant two bids.
Now, if the NCAA tournament was the best 65 teams, they would definitely be in. But sadly, that is not the case. And there are more deserving teams ahead of Appalachian State in the at-large race.

Unfortunately it's not the best 65 teams. It's 65 - (#of autobids that don't deserve to go otherwise).

Montana 70, Idaho State 63 in OT. These two teams played this last Monday night to close out BSC play, also went into OT, with the GRIZ edging out ISU. Great win for the GRIZ, thanks in part to GREAT SR leadership from Mike Chavez (career high 16 PTS), Stuart Mayes and Bryan Elllis. With 8 minutes left in the 2nd half, ISU's Ahad and Schroeder had 18 and 17 pts respectfully. Griz put Ellis on Ahad and Mayes on Schroeder. From that point on Schroeder was shut out and AHAD got a wide open deflected tip open 3 in regulation and another 2. 5 pts from ISU's tandem rest of the way through.
Win is even more impressive considering All BSC player, Jordan Hasquet played with some sort of Virus that really limited him physically.
Also to note: Portland State 96, Montana State 71, very impressive 60 2nd half points by PSU on 71.9 % shooting!!!!!!!! (Can you say ENFUEGO?")
Off to Ogden, UT for

Have you been to the CIAA when it was in Raleigh? If so, I'd be interested to hear how the two compare. We're missing the CIAA around here!
Yes. I have been to the CIAA every year for about 25 years. It was great in Raleigh, and it is great in Charlotte. There are definite pros and cons to both cities. I like the fact that everything is pretty much within walking distance in Charlotte. I miss Raleigh simply because I know the Triangle better, know more people who live there, and after I meet up with my parents at the games, I can go visit my home town (75 to 90 minutes from Raleigh) on my way back to NoVA. Charlotte is too far to drive, so I have to fly, and that takes away a visit to my folks. It's funny, the tournament has grown every year even though the larger schools have all left for the MEAC. The CIAA is wonderful. Raleigh and Charlotte both do it up. I look forward to going each year. It is, IMO, the best college sporting event there is, bar none.
