One of the MAAC teams before they all shut down their programs in 2007. Iona, St. Peter's, St. John's, Canisius, La Salle etc. I think there was an Iona team that was considerably worse than recent Valpo or Davidson squads. I knew a bunch of La Salle players when it was known they were ending football. It was a club team. Guys were recruiting their fall semester frat pledges to play.

LaSalle really ran that program into the dumps. Their stadium wasn't too great but with where they were located in the city they should have done way better recruiting in the Philly 3 High School leagues and if they invested properly into their program they could have been a candidate for the old A-10 football league now known as the CAA.

Their McCarthy Stadium was/is perfectly fine for FCS football. It's listed at 7,500 but I think it was closer to 10k at one point. La Salle easily could have fielded a competitive 1-AA program with some ambition. Unfortunately, they were in the MAAC so ambition was not part of the mission

Fall 1991 squad, after a 1 yr hiatus that saw us disband our entire athletic programs due to sheer ignorance admin’ing in the athl office and renegade coaches. 100% student-non-athletes. Even my former roommate who never played hs football was on the team, all 163lbs of him @ wr lol. Coaches weren’t compensated and were all volunteers. Guys on the team practiced whenever they felt like it since they were non-scholarship. A LOT of records went against the team/school that season including points by AlaSU (92) and GSU (84). From fall 1991 to 1998, we offered 0 scholarships. Fall 1999, we increased to 15 for a few years before exploding to 55 and then 63 from 2003(?) forward.
We have not forgotten and are doing our best to continue to pay all those schools back w/ as many Ls as possible :D . Oddly, I cannot recall the last time we lost to Bama St lol and we are nearing jumping over the GSU hurdle.

I'd have to do some research into which had the longer losing streak, but both are worthy candidates to wear the clown hat as a crown and hold the toilet plunger as a scepter. However, the real asshats were the Columbia band for smarting off to their own football team. The players should have stuffed them down the tubas.

BisonTru is correct. Ours was 80 consecutive games w/out a victory, counting the forfeiture of the 1989 season where the 6-5 record was in effect 0-11 due to one ineligible student-athlete who participated that season. That 1989 season set the stage for our new incoming president to terminate all sports immediately (fall 1990) and quite a few of us moderately involved supporters were in his ear demanding that we stop all sports participation in the ncaa until we cleaned house, thoroughly.
I think Columbia’s was 0-44, thereabouts. We almost doubled it.

I remember Iona in 2005 being pretty awful. UNH was very good that year, but it looked like an NFL team playing a middle school. I think the final was 56-0 but that could have been the halftime score too...
Interestingly enough, that UNH football team played 3 now defunct teams in the same season. Iona, Northeastern, and Hofstra.

Just my two cents, but the 2018 VMI team could be up there.
The Keydets finished 0-11 this season. Their closest loss was a 7 point defeat against D2 Catawba. On average, they scored only 8 points (10 total touchdowns) a game against 37 for their opposition.
Most of their coaching staff has turned over (does not seem like "fired" but "left") and a handful of their best returning players have transferred.
Their schedule will be against a SoCon that, in my opinion, is as deep as it has been in some time. Their nonconference slate includes MAC champion Toledo as well as FBS Old Dominion.
As I look at their slate, the only game that might be winnable is against D2 Tusculum. They may surprise me, but coming off an 0-11 season and facing another one right in the face, they may eventually have claim to this title.

In terms of the CAA, the 2012 URI team may take it. 0-11 with losses to Brown and getting blown out by Georgia State...The second closest loss they had was 20 points, against UNH, funny enough.
If I recall correctly, by the end of the season they were on their 4th qb, a walk on who looked like he had never played football before.
2013 and 2014 URI was pretty awful too, some real low points for the flag ship U that supports a pretty good bball team.

In that case USD automatically becomes the worst team ever.
But in all seriousness, I'd say the 2015 Missouri State team deserves to be up there. Closest game besides the 21-13 win over Chadron State, was a 56-28 loss to Indiana State.

Georgetown back in 2009 was pretty bad.
That 2009 Georgetown team finished 0-11 but put somewhat of a scare into PL Champ Holy Cross in the season opener in Worcester. All of camp we thought the Hoyas would come out running Bucknell's offense at the time. Instead, they came out running our offense. They took the ball and scored on the first drive to go ahead 7-0. A combination of turnovers and stalled drives deep in Georgetown territory resulted in the Hoyas leading 7-6 through three quarters. Crusaders managed to score 2 TD's relatively early in the fourth quarter to put the game away but definitely an early scare.

Yes, last year was bad......would not catagorize them in the top-20 worst teams in the past 35-40 years.....VMI's 1997 & 1998 teams (with Ted Cain running off players each week) went a combined 1-21, was worse, IMO, as was the 2004 team (also 0-11).

Only one winning season, 6-3 (with one vs D-III MIT.) Against a MAAC schedule. Only played one full-scholarship team in 16 years, Florida Atlantic (3-51.)

The Scots' football team set an NCAA Division III record by losing 50 straight games from 1974 to 1980 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Losing_streak#American_football). In 1977, Macalester set a Division III record by allowing 59.1 points per game. The losing streak ended in dramatic fashion: Kicker Bob Kaye put a 23-yarder through the uprights with 11 seconds remaining in an early September 1980 contest as the Scots beat Mount Senario College.[4 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macalester_College#cite_note-42)

Can't kick Iona too much as we recruited their QB Warren Smith when the program disbanded in 2008. In 2011 he lead us to a 8-3 record and a playoff win at App. State which I got to see. That rates as a top 10 win for UMaine. Smith went on to have a pretty good career in arena and German football and may still be playing some semi pro now.:)
