Just announced on ESPN today, Gonzaga's Josh Heytvelt was charged with felony drug possession as a result of his arrest about 10 days ago. During the Zags game with Portland last night, speculation was that the charge was going to come either today (Tuesday) or tomorrow. Safe to say Heytvelt will not play for the Zags at all the rest of the year and his status for playing ever again for the Zags is up in the air. Gonzaga, like most schools, has a provision that if any student commits a felony while at Gonzaga, that student will be subject to disciplinary action including expulsion. Gonzaga has been going by the book on this, so my take is that the people involved will wait to see if Heytvelt is convicted before further action is done.

Sad to see, because having been forced to watch so many North Carolina games this year, Heytvelt was the one person I've seen who was able to put the clamp on Hansbrough. I would have loved to see him go against Oden.

Gonzaga has never had to deal with something of this magnitude, so the officials are making sure the proper precedent is being established, so as to protect both the integrety of the school and athletic department, as well as the rights of the accused.

I agree Heytvelt did a number on Tyler, but McRoberts played him well even though Duke lost. Tyler has been playing well just not dominating, largely due to the fact that this year he doesnt have to go it alone.

On the story of Josh, sad to see a stupid mistake ruin a promising career. Could he pull a Clarett and jump ship and try to go straight to the NBA? looks likely...

As good as Heytvelt is, he is not close to being where Turiaf was when he left Gonzaga and he was late second round pick. To try to jump to the NBA after this year with such a plethora of big men in the draft anyway, would be tough, especially with this charge on him. If the charge is dropped, he could possibly return to Gonzaga next year. If not, he could transfer somewhere and play, or play in Europe or the D-League. What I've heard, Heytvelt is just suspended from the team, he is not expelled from school yet, and the school is waiting to see what happens before further action is discussed.

Heytvelt is a good kid and does fit the type of athlete Gonzaga tries to recruit. It is unfortunate, though, that this type of bad judgement from a 20 year old kid can have this type of consequences, both for him, the athletic department, and the school. Still, rules are rules, and Gonzaga has never placed a student athlete above the student body.

Good Post. While I said it looks likely, I agree with you he should not go to the NBA. If anything transferring would be a great option(Montana!) Do they have the one year sitout rule for basketball as well? Also as you pointed out the draft would be tough for him to do well in, especially with all the great freshman who may or may not come out.
