Overall I really like our class, I think it fills in a lot of holes that we had. Our staff held back 4 spots for more players. They’ll likely be used for drop down OL/DL.

Some of our best players over the last five or six years were not recruited by anyone (including us) and fell into our lap well after signing day. This past season, we added a true freshman (Marcus Cooper) just before fall camp started. We pulled his redshirt in week three and he finished the year with 646 yards on 64 carries (10.1 ypc) ... pretty much single-handedly beat Nicholls. We've had several walk-ons turn out to be better than scholarship guys, and some made all-conference. We all swing and miss, and sometimes we get lucky.

Good point. So I decided to look back at UCA's 2013 signing class of 13 kids.

These 6 standouts helped UCA go 24-3 in conference in three years. So nearly 50% were pretty effective in contributing to that record. Good class IMO.

Some of our best players over the last five or six years were not recruited by anyone (including us) and fell into our lap well after signing day. This past season, we added a true freshman (Marcus Cooper) just before fall camp started. We pulled his redshirt in week three and he finished the year with 646 yards on 64 carries (10.1 ypc) ... pretty much single-handedly beat Nicholls. We've had several walk-ons turn out to be better than scholarship guys, and some made all-conference. We all swing and miss, and sometimes we get lucky.


You never know how somebody's gonna turn out....my freshman year at McNeese, the scout team O-line was going one on one with the ones and twos on the DL. We had a walk-on OT who was absolutely killing one of the guys who was contending to be a starter at DE.

The DL coach was a former Marine drill instructor. So after about four or five plays with the DE getting his ass handed to him by a freshman, he walks over and says "Hell, Cedric. Why don't you go back to the dormitory and get your scrapbook. I think you're gonna need it to convince this walk-on that you were a HS All-American."

Late addition. Theory is that he was holding out hoping to get an offer to a bigger FBS school and then everybody filled up and he got left out in the cold.
