You mean like 10k+...yeah, we used to be ok attendance-wise. The last few years though it's really dropped off a cliff in terms of what's officially reported. Our AD back in most of the '00s was one of those guys who'd count tickets sold, people in the parking lot, people randomly walking by the stadium...then round up. According to what was reported, we pulled 19,287 at one game. I was at that game...it was a great crowd...it was maybe 15k to 16k tops.

Our last AD was a decent guy, but the way he did things, they only counted actual tickets "taken" as people came into the stadium. Thing is, I saw plenty of people just walking in without having anything to do with tickets...those people weren't being counted. Also, students get in free by showing their student ID...those people don't get counted either. This has led to our attendance numbers appearing down more than they actually have been. Don't get me wrong...it's down...quite a bit (so is our enrollment)...but it's not "fewer than 15k combined at home games for the entire season" down though. Homecoming last year was reported to the NCAA as 5631. I looked back at my posts right after the game and my guess only a day or so removed was somewhere around 10k and it looked like the largest crowd I'd seen at Hanson Field in a decade.

If I had to guess our real attendance for last season, look at the individual game attendance numbers (5631, 3217, 2247, 2812) and double them. As I said, still not great, but not quite as bad as was being reported. I'm hoping with our new AD this year things might get a little better in terms of accuracy.

Sounds like keeping track of these things isn’t a priority for WIU. SDSU students enter free with their IDs too, but they scan those when they enter to keep track of student attendance.

Aah, I remember those days. Actually we paid a quarterly activity fee of $34 that allowed admittance to all athletic events, use of the fieldhouse weight Room, pool, sauna, rec center etc.

Basically, the first step was touchback to 25 from 20. This is the next logical step.

Where the hell are ST_Lawson's MVFC articles on The FCS Wedge?

Well, I started working on an article last week previewing the games, but work got busy (which is when I actually have time to do most of my writing) and I wasn't able to get more than a few games into it. With the way things are right now with work and stuff, I think what I'll probably have to do is hold off until conference games start. I plan on doing an OOC Wrap-Up article, a quick rundown of the games and highlights of what all happened, and then start previewing the MVFC games, since there'll only be 5 to do each week, rather than 10. I might be able to do it a week earlier (for games 9/22) if things get a little slower at work and since most of the conference is on bye that weekend (there's only 3 games involving MVFC teams).

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that I didn't completely abandon them, just not quite enough hours in the day lately. They'll return in a few weeks.

Easton Stick has an impressive community service resume. The senior quarterback has helped raise more than $2,000 and collected more than 2,000 pounds of food for the Fargo Emergency Food Pantry. Stick has also served as a guest reader at various Fargo elementary schools, reinforcing the importance of reading and school work to local youth. On campus, Stick spearheaded a football camp which serviced Special Olympics athletes, the first at the university. Stick also assisted in organizing a 5K run that raised more than $5,000 in donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Inside the classroom, Stick has been a stellar student-athlete, graduating last December with an impressive 3.91 grade point average.

I plan on doing an OOC Wrap-Up article, a quick rundown of the games and highlights of what all happened, and then start previewing the MVFC games, since there'll only be 5 to do each week, rather than 10. I might be able to do it a week earlier (for games 9/22) if things get a little slower at work and since most of the conference is on bye that weekend (there's only 3 games involving MVFC teams).

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that I didn't completely abandon them, just not quite enough hours in the day lately. They'll return in a few weeks.

Actually, I think this shoould put us in top 8, maybe top 6 discussion, based on how we won. The biggest surprise is we kept their pass game in check, which allowed us to pull away some. Our secondary had a very nice game against their big talented receivers. But otherwise, while we won in iimpressive fashion, this CSU team is probably a bottom 20 FBS team this year. But just one year ago,, this program lost to Alabama 41-23 ... ans 18 point loss. And this year, we beat them 35-19 for a 16 point margin. And even though their offense lost 7 starters, so did our defense .. that is the biggest surprise so far .. the defense has reloaded. We technically lost 9 starters from a year ago. But we rotated a lot on defense last year, so we had some returners with some quality reps step into starter role more easily.

Now we see if we can shake the inconsistency that's plagued us the last 2 years .. too many highs followed by lows in 2016 and 2017. With OC Beathard back in charge of offense, we're feeling really good about our offense this year.

Kennesaw State no...... I mean it was last year but they lost to Sam Houston, a team that got no respect here

Wazzu is always a tough place to play at. Winning on the road while climbing almost 5000ft to up near 7000ft of elevation is not an easy ordeal. I compared the way NDSU played against Cal Poly vs EWU and when they have a common opponent both at home, I liked the way EWU won by constantly laying it on. ISUr is behind them in my poll but they still made the T8. As I said earlier, failure to have those 8 teams in there is bad voting. I can see anyone slotting them from 4-7/8. ISUr beat a NAIA team, a TERRIBLE EIU team who lost to ISUb and TSU, and dismantled a bad 1-4 CSU team. This is why I put EWU above them.

They had 200 yards of offense against Louisville and were kept in the game by weather...until they lost by 4 scores.

They played 0-3 EIU, gave up 41 points and gave up 455 yards passing.....by contrast your Redbirds gave up 10 points and 109 yards passing. The 10 points you gave up were second half points after it appears the starters were pulled.

right, but something is starting to click a bit in Terre Haute. According to Massey, those were the 2 worst team you played a year ago .. and yes, those were 2 very close game. But you're average margin loss in the other 9 games was 37 points ... including my Redbirds only beating you by 11 after leading 24-0 at half.

This year ISUb put up a nice fight against Louisville .. both teams had to deal with weather elements & delays. Louisville got 14 points with a lot of help from punt return team. Score was tied at half, thanks to the punt return for TD. And went up 21-7 thanks to punt return to ISUb 23 yard line. And they also needed 17 Q4 points to pull away.

But then things slipped for your defense against EIU in a 55-41 win on road .. but you still got you offense going. This was a game you lost by 2 at home a year ago. They actually made us work harder than score appeared and got some yards on us, but it was more of a bend don't break strategy once we got lead. Still they got some yards on us in 2nd half.

Got to feel good after last season .. your coach is class act. Good luck with rest of season.

we got 97 on 1 play after stopping them at our goal line on 4th down. Faked the obvious handoff to Robinson up the middle, and threw 40+ yards to Schnell who beat his man deep ... 2 plays, 14 point swing, game over.

So what is up with UNI and Dunne this year .. thought he was legit. I had UNI as #2 in MVFC ... doesn't make any sense. Is Farley a QB killer ??

This year ISUb put up a nice fight against Louisville .. both teams had to deal with weather elements & delays. Louisville got 14 points with a lot of help from punt return team. Score was tied at half, thanks to the punt return for TD. And went up 21-7 thanks to punt return to ISUb 23 yard line. And they also needed 17 Q4 points to pull away.

But then things slipped for your defense against EIU in a 55-41 win on road .. but you still got you offense going. This was a game you lost by 2 at home a year ago. They actually made us work harder than score appeared and got some yards on us, but it was more of a bend don't break strategy once we got lead. Still they got some yards on us in 2nd half.

Got to feel good after last season .. your coach is class act. Good luck with rest of season.

We got a couple new qbs. The transfer from Iowa, Boyle, seems to be relatively mobile with a solid arm. Our OLine is pretty solid. Our D is missing some parts but I think EIU is going to put up stats this year, I think their coaching staff is going to be gone in 8 weeks though.

Mallory is what we need for a HC. I hope it takes him about 5 years to move on to bigger and better.

If you had to do an MVFC power rankings right now, how would you rank the conference from top to bottom? Obviously since we are only 1 game into the conference slate, this will probably shuffle around a little bit.

I think I'd sort the conference like this:

1. NDSU 4-0 (1-0)
2. SDSU 2-1 (0-1)
3. Missouri State 3-1 (1-0)
4. Illinois State 3-1 (0-1)
5. Northern Iowa 2-2 (1-0)
6. South Dakota 2-2 (1-0)
7. Western Illinois 2-2 (1-0)
8. Indiana State 2-2 (0-1)
9. Southern Illinois 1-3 (0-1)
10. Youngstown State 1-3 (0-1)

I wouldn't be surprised to see N. Iowa climb the rankings. I'm also not sure whether SIU or YSU is the worst team, but YSU has the worst loss so they seem to be the bottom atm. In either case, Indiana State seems to be better than both SIU and YSU at least so far. I'm very curious to see if Missouri State's win vs ISUr was an anomaly or if they really are the 3rd best team in the valley this year. They have looked improved in their other early games so far this season, so maybe the bears are for real.

NDSU and SDSU seem to be in a class of their own, at least for the moment.

ISUr and MSU seem to be an odd pairing for the 2nd teir, but thats what it looks like atm.

UNI, USD, WIU seem nearly interchangable atm as 3rd teir.

The last 3 seem pretty bad this year, but Indiana State looks the best out of the 3. There were a few points in the UNI game in the first half where they didn't look lost/awful like they usually do. The final score sure looks bad though.

SIU and YSU are just... yikes...

Ha, I appreciate that. I do think the MVFC picture will be 100% more clear after this week. I wouldn't have a whole lot of confidence putting together an MVFC power ranking right now, but after this weekend, I think I'll be pretty confident.

Was ISUr's loss to Mo St. an anomaly or is ISUr not as strong as we thought they were? Neither, MSU is good and just put it together that day.

Was SDSU just hungover or did ISUb expose some weaknesses in SDSU's defense? Hangover

Is YSU going to struggle all year or get things back on track? Struggle all year

Is USD legit? Not really, playoff bubble team at best

I'm surprised you think SIU will get beat that badly. They seem like a team that is destined to be able to keep up on offense when they need to, but their defense won't be able to come up with a key stop when it's needed. I'll be betting on SIU at +14.5 for sure.

I completely agree with UNI/USD being a very tight game. Other than SDSU, this is the game I'm most looking forward to watching. I think UNI comes out on top, but I can't tell if that's my bias against USD or not.

YSU and ILSU are the two MVFC teams that Western has played this season and I've seen them both live in back-to-back weekends. The Redbird defense is WAY better than the Penguins defense. We put up 45 against YSU...16 at ILSU. SIU's DJ Davis is going to have a hard time running the ball against ISU, but SIU might get halfway decent yardage through the air. I just don't see them getting more than a couple of TDs.

Does anyone know if Straub is playing for SIU? I didn't see anything on the tweeter machine that said one way or another. Given SIU's offensive struggles minus Straub against YSU I'd agree it's pretty unlikely they stay in the game against ISUr without him.

The last thing I've seen was that Straub was expected to start. If he's not, the spread should be bigger than 14.

I'm not sold on USD yet. Up and down so far this year. Weber totally shut them down but I don't think UNI's defense is as good as Weber's.

If they win this one then I might start coming around....
