I don't dude, I have eaten deep dish pizza a few times and I have eaten it in Chicago and there was no way that baby was going down without a fork.
most do use fork and knife for XL deep dish or stuffed, either to avoid getting messy during dinner, .... or if too big and heavy, the a pie cut crust will be harder to manage. But it can be done with hands only if made right .. crispy strong crust, don't let it get soggy with veggies or tomato sauce.

Malnati's makes a deep dish that usually holds up. Giordanos 1 1/2 inch stuffed will usually hold up .. the 2 1/2 inch stuffed is certainly a challenge .. if they did it right.

By the way, many alleged Chicago area pizzerias have been known to ruin pizza by not doing the crust right .. whichever style. It is the first thing I notice when I try a new pizza place. I won't go back if they screw up the crust. Other times, it is self imposed when customer puts too much crap on their pizza. My view is .. order a damn salad if you want to ruin a perfectly good pizza with all that veggie stuff. Do that to a deep dish or stuffed, and then you have that casserole crap.

Proven statistical fact .. 90% or more of leftover pizza at all parties ever thrown, are the ones with all the veggie crap.

So the best thing about Chicago Pizza, is not simply "Chicago Style" deep dish or stuffed pizza. The best thing is we do a wide variety of pizza styles depending on your tastes ... and none of them casserole like in any way. We have Thin, Super Thin (no, not flat bread), Thick, Rustic, Deep Dish, and Stuffed (noth 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 inch). Our Thin and Super Thin crusts actually hold firm. not that droopy crap they like so much in NY.

Thats why you need a high temp pizza deck to pull the moisture away from the pizza. The conveyor system and electric pizza ovens just cant do that.

I know we talk pizza in these parts, but someone mentioned hot potato salad and I just gotta mention the best potato salad I have ever had. If any of you guys ever make it down to Dekalb, IL...like if you're playing NIU or something...stop by Fatty's Pub and Grille. It's literally under 1,000 ft from their video board to the entrance to the Fatty's parking lot. Now, the burgers there are great, but they have something called Cajun Fried Potato Salad...and damn if that isn't the best potato salad...hell, it's the best appetizer...that I have ever tasted.
It's probably crazy busy right after a game, but if you can get in there, it's worth it.

Oh, it is. Both my grandmother and my parents have quite a bit of it. I broke a plate once while doing dishes and cut my hand pretty badly. They can make a real thin and sharp sliver when they go.

My step dad got me enjoying those when I was younger, of course I never drank until I turned 21 xlolx and ever since then it has been my go to.

Whenever my uncle comes up for the summer (May-Oct) he always brings home at least 10 cases in hopes he can stretch them out until the following May but he usually complains around February/March about how he ran out and how it sucks.

Back when I smoked they would take a couple weeks to get their tobacco products stocked, they sell cheap tire gauges but literally every time I needed one in a pinch they didn’t have any (three times spread along a year), and they are woefully bad at keeping their soda/energy drinks in stock. If you’re going to be running a promo on NOS or Rockstar, maybe make sure you have extra in stock? It ain’t rocket science.

He’s pretty good damn good. Or was in HS. The QB situation has been a bit of a mess at Iowa ever since Drew Tate graduated a decade ago. They just recruit 10 of them and open competition and over recruit and then refuse to play the younger guys even if it’s better and it gets messy.

I think ISUb has a ton of problems that he won’t help or fix BUT he is highly, highly, talented. Schools line Michigan, Nebraska, Michigan State, etc were all after him but he wanted to be a Hawk and I’d guess he was sold the idea he was to take over after CJ Beathard left, just like 4 other guys that year.

I think you’ve got a hell of a player.

Wabash is his alma mater, and I believe, a bit closer to his family. Also, his wife has MS, and Crawfordsville is only about an hour from Indy, so I wonder if proximity to medical facilities was a factor. He's gotta do what's best for his family, and I can't blame him for that. It is disappointing for Western and the community though...Matt is a really nice guy and he did some good things here, especially considering the financial situation with the state.

Look at what I said and look if I actually referenced it to on-field performance. Hint, it doesn't. It has to do with how the staff recruits and handles the QB position at Iowa.


This season is the just the second time since Stanzi where there wasn't a QB controversy coming out of spring and going into fall with 7 QBs on roster and Kirk playing the competition card every year, no matter who is returning. This is why you are seeing the transfers out

2017: QB position battle open. On August 25th Kirk said in an interview he was in no hurry to make a decision. It was a 4 person battle with Stanley, Wiegers, Boyle and Mansell.

2016: The 2016 season had Bethard starting but his favor was wearing thin by the end of the season with the fans as he completed 55% of his passes, didn't seem to understand when to run, when to slide when to throw it away and missed a bunch of reads. Iowa fans hated Rudock because all he did was check down, yet CJ's numbers are Jake's numbers. The whole preseason - and even in season because of the way Beathard played - was marred with this ongoing inability/unwillingness of Kirk to committ to Drew Cook, Stanley or Wiegers as the back up. He went from 62% to 56% completion, lost over 900 yards in passing, threw the same number of TDs and doubled his INTs from 2015

2013-2015: In 2015 Bethard was the guy because he threatened to transfer if Kirk didn't chase Jake Rudock out of town. Kirk did and CJ took over. Meanwhile Jake went on to have one of the single greatest seasons in Michigan QB history. Rudock had started 25 of 26 games during his JR and SR season in Iowa City. Completed over 60% of his passes, threw for 5,000 yards, had 34 TD passes to 18 Int (and as a senior had 16-5) had a rating of over 130 for his career in Iowa City. He was benched at half time of the bowl game for CJ because there was weeks - actually the entire season had talks of CJ threatening to transfer if he didn't get to play. So much so that during bowl prep he was rumored to have had contact with other schools and his father made some very serious, and specific, comments as to where CJ would land. Jake was benched at halftime of the 2014 bowl game and the game was handed to CJ and Kirk promised him after the game he would be the starter the next season, even though Jake had another year left. Jake transfered to Michigan and set the single game record for touchdown passes with 6, became the first QB in school history to pass for 250 yards in three straight games, first to throw for 250 yards in 5 straight games, was just the second QB in school history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season (3,017 behind only John Navarre), set the single season completion percentage at over 64%, and was named the MVP of the Citrus bowl. He had more yards, a better completion percent, a better passer rating and more TDs than CJ did that same year. 2014 was one of Kirks famous open battles with the position open to CJ and Jake. Jake won it. For the next two seasons Kirk would play mind games with Jake and pulling him out of the game for a few series at a time, or a quarter, or a few plays, and never really committed to keeping him as the QB.

2012 he committed 100% behind Vandenburg who was mostly a disaster and should have found a better solution. However, he didn't have a choice because in 2011 he ran this open thing like he did with Jake and CJ and then again last season. 2011 He went with junior JVB over freshman Jake Rudock and another junior in John Wienke. Wienke was told to go with Iowa by former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr as he would have been an ideal follow up to Ricky Stanzi. Ferentz turned him into a punter. Following the 2012 season - with Rudock already having spent multiple years on campus he brought Beathard in via transfer with the promise that he'd become the starting QB - which led to his ultimate unhappiness when wasn't and his direct quotes to the media about how he was going to transfer.

Again, my comment wasn't based on on field performance. It has to do with how Ferentz handles his QB recruiting and refusing to play the best one and instead the most oldest one.

You forget, I've lived in Iowa my entire life. I'm surrounded by nothing but Hawkeye fans. I don't like Iowa but I know quite a bit about them. All local sports talk shows are Hawkeye heavy. If I want to be able to carry a conversation with my neighbors, co-workers, anyone in the area I need to have a functional understanding of Hawkeye sports.

Hell, let's keep playing this out for a year or two. Stanely has 2 years left, due to transfers out Iowa is down to 3 scholarship QBs this year. JR Nate Stanley, RSFr Mansell and true freshman Spencer Petras. There is a 4th but he is a walk on junior. Let's go 2 years down the road when Stanley is gone. This same pattern plays out again. Kirk will feel compelled to play Mansell - who will be a RS Jr - or Petras who will be a RS So (assuming he doesn't get tired of Iowa weather and not playing after coming in from California). Who starts? What does Iowa do? IIRC they had offers out to 4 QBs right now. They will try to sign 2 a year, is my guess, for the next two years, which will lead to a 7-8 month battle, Kirk unsure of who to pick so he will pick the oldest QB and it will lead to transfers and position changes again. That's the cycle in Iowa City.

It is. The quotes in the article make it sound like maybe there was some issue with grades or something, but I don't really know for sure. It is a big loss for them, since he was likely going to be a huge part of their offense this year.

This might surprise you, but SIU moved to middle of MVFC pack in defense last season:

- 4th in pass defense efficiency
- 5th in pass defense YPG
- 6th in run defense, both YPG and YPC ... not far from 5th
- 4th (tied) in total defense Yards per Play, though 6th in YPG
- that said, 8th in scoring defense

I feel like SIU program is trending positive .. of course, ISUr forgot to show up in our game last year, but I think the new young coach, combined with Kill's return in admin/consultative capacity bodes well. I haven't looked at who they lost to graduation yet ... But I think they could move into middle tier of MVFC this season.

And they wouldn't be the first football program going into 3rd year under new coach that relied on more transfers to plug the roster holes while their recruiting style takes hold. Spack did same thing his first 4 years, but weaned it way back by time we made our Natty run in 2014. JMU has done the same thing with more immediate success.

I can claim that it just shows how tough their schedule has been having to play all these other MVFC teams ranked higher than them. Do you think Harvard (40-10 in that timeframe) would've fared better with the same schedule that USD played? How about Charleston Southern (41-19 in that timeframe)? Those two teams are right in front of USD in this rating. I'd say that's debatable.

We see the same argument almost every year when an MVFC team hanging at or slightly below .500 is still getting votes in the AGS poll after 6-8 games have been played.

Southern Illinois is #16. They are 24-33 over that 5 year span, let that sink in.

Which shows Sagarin is largely based off previous seasons rankings coming into the year (skewed like this one) and opponents, not how good you are. It would take years and years of down football for most of the MVFC teams to not be in the Top 25.

I hate rankings that work like this. Polls, like AGS, are actually realistic.

I'm sure they did trend "up" but considering they have been so poor for so long, the only way to go is up.

Sometimes transfers work and sometimes they do not.

Agreed .. not all transfers work out, and very few walk right in and start game 1.. Some just don't acclimate well, or just underestimate the level of football in MVFC. For ISUr during 2009-13 period, Spack averaged right around 13 on his roster at any given time. But only maybe 1/3rd eventually started, another 1/3rd 2nd string, and the last 1/3rd either never really factored or didn't last. But he was able to turn the Redbird defense from bottom 10 in FCS in 2010 to top 10 in 2011 with a couple key transfers ... RS FR DT Shelby Harris, JR LBs Nate Palmer and Evan Frierson .. the first 2 are in NFL still. But he also had to fire his 1st DC and became HC and DC for 2011 .. so that worked out well. By 2014 Natty run, he was down to maybe 6, and it has leveled about there since then.

Fun Fact .. Spack had Auburn SO RB stud Michael Dyers in his office begging for a chance after burning bridges at Auburn .. Spack said no - had to say no many times reportedly. And 2012 was a year we weren't as deep at RB and it came back to haunt us as we limped into playoffs with a very banged up RB group .. couldn't do enough offensively to keep up with EWU and keep their high octane pass game off the field.

I can only hope that UND fares ten times worse than USD for their first 6 years in the conference. I'm talking 0-8 for the entire time. Nothing less will suffice.

Both Missouri State and Indiana State are celebrating. UNDies are in for the same awakening that all the Dakota teams went through, especially USD.

The MVFC is a FBS like league. SIU almost took out a top 40 FBS team then struggled to win in the league. The jump in the average team is significant.

I'm sure you know this, mmiller, but I'm going to be a broken record and repeat what I do every time this topic gets brought up for the rest of the crowd: SDSU attendance figures are "butts in seats" when they are reported. If they are paid for and don't get used, they don't get counted. SDSU is one of the few schools in the NCAA that does this, so comparing them to others only works if you're blindfolded. Take off the metaphorical blindfold (aka: attend a game or two) and it doesn't take a genius to see that people don't match the figures in most cases, particularly at the university down south.
