I've been to Fargo in October/November and...well..that's different. The first 3 weeks of September I'm not concerned about.

I wasn’t far off that Friday night by the time we were playing made up poker that I don’t remember. All I remember is Jastram dominating. That’s it. I know we played poker. I know IBYs wife was terrified of a tornado that was a few miles north. Her and Jastrom’s better half whipped my ass in pong...I think?...

Ended up taking straight tequila shots. Chasing with many beers followed by more tequila.

Eventually cards started. I won money while not being able to see straight. Next thing I know Jastram and I are squeezed into the back of an Uber that was the size of my Focus.

That was a perfect night. I want that night back.

With the machine that NDSU has coming back, Poly is going to get crushed in this game....easily.

Poly being in the UNI game this year was a travishamockery of errors.

UNI was starting 2 freshman safeties and a freshman LB.

Yes, Poly had 305 yards rushing but they did so on just 4.2 YPC…that’s pretty good defense against a TO team like Poly. What killed UNI was the 3 freshman not maintaining deep pass responsibility and blowing coverages. Poly had 238 yards passing and 4 TDs on 9 completions. TD passes of 44, 34, 35, and 53 yards all due to a complete breakdown in assignments from the freshman who got too enamored with stopping the run. That’s an average scoring play of 42 yards. Outside of those 4 TD scoring drives Poly had drives of

4 plays 8 yards
5 plays 10 yards
4 plays 9 yards
3 plays 8 yards
7 plays 26 yards
3 plays -4 yards
4 plays -9 yards


There was only really only 2 sustained drives
14 plays 66 yards – field goal on first drive of the second half…was a ton of nothing sans a 26 yard run from the CP38 to the UNI 36
13 plays 74 yards – TD – got a 15 yard facemask penalty and a 33 yard completion on that drive as well

That game was proof, as talented as the freshman we had last year are, they weren’t game ready in week 2. Poly ran 88 plays, and truly only 6 or 7 of them is what nearly did UNI in. Outside of those 6 plays – which I know can’t be taken back and they happened and all that **** – UNI really dominated that game.

NDSU isn’t going to start 3 freshman (2 true) on defense. They aren’t going to bite like the UNI DBs did on those plays.

Poly had 23 yards passing in that game. They didn’t cross 148 passing the rest of the season. Only 1 time did they have a better completion % than they did in that game – the one they went for 148 passing. They averaged 87 yards passing outside of that game.

The only real main difference in NDSU and UNI is that NDSU doesn’t beat themselves – where UNI is the biggest masochist in the FCS.

This game won’t be close.

Had the safeties stayed back in coverage Cal Poly would have rushed for more yards. UNI did not think Cal Poly could hurt them in the passing game and threw everything to stop the run. They gambled and lost. What I find interesting is they never made an adjustment after repeatedly getting burned.

NDSU defense is stout enough to not sell out to stop the run so it most likely be tough sledding for Cal Poly’s offense.

Go watch the game...It was blown coverage, not stacking the box.

The game tying TD was literally a freshman safety turning his hips the wrong way and then rather than lighting the WR up to break the pass up he went for the pick on his recovery. he ran 2 yards in front of the WR and ran right past him opening the grand canyon of space to get to the goal line

Very first play is a 44 yard TD pass. UNI has 6.5 in the box. The strong side backer is in the box but playing outside of the split back. UNI has a 1 deep safety - playing his first game at safety after 3 years of being a corner - and an All American corner at that. Poly fakes the pitch to the over motion. The safety (who ended up an AA CB this year after moving back to CB) opened his hips wrong and took the wrong route for his single deep duties. The LB that was man up on the slot gives a half assed bump but you can see from the way he passes the WR off he's expecting help over the top. The one step that Campbell took cost him and there was no one else deep to help. That's not Poly execution. That's a guy whose never played deep not understanding the single high concept. Seriously - watch it. He took a bad first step, opened his hips wrong and then rotated back over his hips to do a 270 to turn to run with the WR rather than staying with the way he did open which would have just been a straight shoulder turn and run

The second TD pass was 34 yards. Once again, 7 in the box with single deep coverage with the same safety. Once again the safety doesn't read the field and runs his first 4-5 steps flat to the LOS. Poly runs a sweet fake with him going on a wheel with the single split running a inside post release. Watch the backers, as soon as they see pass the drop into zone. The CB is in zone as well and takes the wheel. Again, the single high safety needs to be covering the middle of the field. Where is he? Taking off towards the sideline because he doesn't pay attention to his coverage duties. He is a half step slow from breaking it up. He has enough recovery speed that he is right on the WR hip in the endzone but that half step wouldn't put him a head of the WR for a pick of easy PBU

35 yard TD pass was literally 2 seam routes off the right side. Not a good angle of the full play but a true sophomore was in coverage on it. I can't tell if there was supposed to be safety help as there isn't a presnap angle to show the defense but there was 4 or 5 UNI defenders in that quarter of the field. It's pretty clear someone screwed something up back there in terms of handing a guy off. EDIT...UPON slower inspection it was the outside guy that went from outside fullspeed to the goal post. 24 is the safety and rather than running with the deep route he waits 4 steps for the fly route to get on him before turning and running. He allowed himself to get caught up in the deep curl - which had 3 LBs on it.

Game tying score - as I already mentioned above - all the freshman safety had to do was make a tackle. Hit the guy. He's going to jar the ball loose or stop the guy at the 30 yard line.

Now here's a screen shot of the moment of the catch. Notice how the UNI guy is 5 yards deeper than the Poly WR? Poly WR was running full speed toward the sideline. All he had to do was touch him and he's OB - at the least. Now, look at the photo then watch what he did. He literally ran in front of him and half ass swung at the WR. That's it.

Literally nothing about the scores was scheme. It's not a "would have rushed for more yards" situation. It's not a anything other than UNI's inexperienced safety's making the wrong play. Poly did nothing on those. Poly didn't design a passing scheme to catch anyone off guard. The QB didn't even make good throws. He threw the ball as hard/far as he could. It just so happened that was about 30 yards. UNI didn't throw **** at stopping the run they don't any other week. It was a 4-3 standard 4-3 alignment with a safety in a monster position. It wasn't even a bear front, it was standard 4-3 alignment.


NDSU safeties won't do that. You're boned.

I know IBYs wife was terrified of a tornado that was a few miles north. Her and Jastrom’s better half whipped my ass in pong...I think?...

Ended up taking straight tequila shots. Chasing with many beers followed by more tequila.

Eventually cards started. I won money while not being able to see straight. Next thing I know Jastram and I are squeezed into the back of an Uber that was the size of my Focus.

That was a perfect night. I want that night back.

Cal Poly had an awful season in 2017, but has had some big wins early in the season over the last 5 to 10 years. Problem is Cal Poly does not have the depth of a team like NDSU so a few key injuries can derail a season. One recent big road win took place two years ago when Cal Poly went to Brookings and beat SDSU 38-31. That same SDSU team went to Fargo theee weeks later and beat NDSU 19-17.

It would be a huge upset if Cal Poly were to beat NDSU. I highly doubt they will, but I would not be surprised if they gave NDSU a better game than most here are expecting.

Never said I think Cal Poly will win or even hinted that they could win. I did say that I THINK Cal Poly COULD make a better game than most here think. I absolutely think they will give the Bison a better game than a team like Mississippi Valley State.

Going there on a summer and/or late summer day and having a beer being on the lake, I know DL is not "on the lake" is hard to beat. The idea of just being able to hop off the boat and grab a brew and some grub is where it is at. I know they have live music in the summer and just being able to walk to the beach from the bar adds to the experience.

I prefer the Ottertail Lake one though if I had my choice, but the DL one is the original one.

It was more like 1980 for me, but yeah I remember drinking that 3.2 beer. Had to drink about 15 of them just to get a mild buzz on!

Would love recommendationsHotel options:
Marriott: Courtyard in Moorhead is nice. They are building a new courtyard in Fargo but don't think it will be ready. The Delta is close to the mall and was recently remodeled so should be nice. There's a Residence Inn in South Fargo if you prefer the suite option with a kitchenette. Avoid the Fairfield, they are pretty worn in Fargo.

Hilton: More new hotels. Garden inn and Home 2 Suites are pretty center of town and can get you anywhere quickly including a billion chain restaurants. There is a Double Tree in West Fargo that's decent and right on the freeway. There is a Homewood Suites across the street from the Fargodome so very convenient for being close to the airport and game.

Those would be my hotel recommendations. Fargo is small - everything is basically within a 15 minute drive. So location isn't all that critical. If the wife and offspring like shopping, staying near the mall is nice (Delta, Home 2, or HGI are best). If you'd rather stay near the game and airport, go Homewood. One note- I'm not sure which hotels all have pools so if your kids want to swim, double check that first.

Spatzel is a small dumpling (really just a snip of dough) and in Jager Schnitzel the gravy and meat is put on top of them. They do serve a mac and cheese version that I have been told is good. But after a couple of beers and the above, no way I can do another dish of food.

Coarse ground mustard is good. I have often been tempted to ask where they get it from as it is one of the better tasting ones I have come across. Not as good as the stuff I had in Augsburg at the Ratskeller. But then some things are better at the source.

Word of advice for ya: If you wait until the last minute to do something, the good news is it will only take a minute.Well there is Community Ed (day programs for kids and adults) that runs through the summer and the rooms I have to wait to do, are occupied until 2 weeks before school, so that is why I can't get into these rooms which causes me to push it off until August. They supply around 20% of the budget so the district will not let me kick them out of their room unless it is deemed a high priority issue.

Have to agree with POD Knows here, that kitchen was a bonfire waiting to happen. Not to mention the rest of the building was in crap shape. Why don't you just have a kegger at a landfill or a sewage treatment plan, it would smell about the same as the old Turf. There is a difference between "dive bar" atmosphere and a toxic waste dump and the Turf had migrated to the latter, in a big way, towards the end of life. The last time I was in there, we were drinking some tap beer which was heinously bad, so bad in fact, that they had to shut some of the taps off because they thought their lines might have been dirty or something. I can't even imagine what that kitchen looked like before the predictable fire consumed the place.

Anyway, the place is a legend, I drank quite a bit of beer there but stayed away from the food for the most part towards the end. I am pretty sure that place had not been cleaned since the 70's.

I actually agree with you two, the people I know that are germaphobes are the ones that seem to get sick the most. Too much hand sanitizer usage. Though I will probably draw the line at a dive bar that serves sushi though......

You maybe on to something with the chili. I like hot (like real hot, not Midwest hot) and spicy foods and I have come down with a bug twice in the last 15 years. And both times it was my own fault for going over a month with not enough sleep.

She is extremely brilliant and she actually made cellular biology entertaining. Normally I would have just learned what I needed to, but she presented the information in a way that I finally began to understand.
