Might be our next SLC member.

The fact they are purple is reason enough to ban them from the SLC forever!

Isn't a purple field a peresonal foul in the NCAA? That's roughing the player's eyes and deserves at least a 15 yard penalty... :D

Speaking of turf, any new pics of your new turf and cleaned up stands? Have they finished all they were going to do?

A Cowboy fan (Bob Phillips) shot an aerial video and some still shots of the field. The pressure washing is underway. Someone (I think it was Keith Zembower on his daily blog) posted a picture of some men working on it a few days ago, but not much to see as it looks as though they had just started. https://www.facebook.com/YoBob/videos/pcb.1917655341626640/10213912589901465/?type=3&theater&ifg=1

The new turf is certainly welcome after the nasty stuff the Cowboys have been playing on for the last few years.

McNeese fans are also very excited about the new Health & Human Performance building (basketball and volleyball arena) which is under construction and should be completed in the not to distant future.

The arial shots look good. I knew the powerwashing was planned, but didn't know how far along it was. I didn't know about the HHP building. That will be a nice addition. Thanks for the updates.

Media Day coming up and the players representing their schools will be revealed this week.

For @ACUFootball (https://twitter.com/ACUFootball). It'll be QB Luke Anthony and DT Dante Hibbert meeting the press.

I noticed WalMart is going to McNeese colors now. Wonder if they have an exec with Cowboy ties...

Our 2018 roster is up but it is missing some players. I think they are updating it as time goes on. https://acusports.com/roster.aspx?roster=289&path=football

I used to think that when I saw certain players missing from our roster, but it turns out they left for various reasons. It happens every year.

Wonder if S: Eric Huhn 6-3; 200 will be ready to go? Talented DB out of the San Antonio area who went to Texas, can't seem to catch a break from the injury bug though.

If he is 100% he could be a dominating player in the ACU secondary.

He was actually relatively healthy last year but didn't start because I think there were better players in front of him like Bolu Onifade and Brandon Richmond, who both return this year. Our secondary is definitely the strength of our team going into this season.

He saw the field last year for the first time since high school. He just couldn’t avoid injury down in Austin. I a. Looking for bigger things from him this year with a year of game experience behind him.

Out of those, 17 are transfers

This year is looking better for us, and if we hold together, then it should get better.

Sorry this is not football, but here is a link to the progress of the new three-floor arena at McNeese (right by Cowboy Stadium) that will house basketball (and basketball practice court) volleyball, coaches' offices, classrooms for sports medicine, etc.: http://www.mcneesesports.com/galleries/?gallery=331

The image which I have attached (hopefully) is the floor plan. The practice basketball court will be separated from the volleyball court by a drop-down curtain. When volleyball is not going on, the volleyball court can also be used as a practice basketball court, too. Kudos to the architects for good use of space in the multi-purpose facility.

The closer the season gets, the more confidence I have in this team. I actually think the defense with be MUCH better than in the past. Not as good as in the championship game years, but still much improved. The offense will still be good. Probably not as prolific and productive, but thats an okay thing if the D can improve. Dare will fit into this offense well I think. Nicholls and UCA will be our biggest games of the year no question. Excited for this season to get goin. About 50 days away from kickoff!

Well, after our proposed walk through photo shoot for tomorrow got cancelled, I am beginning to wonder if they are so far behind on this project that they don't want the public to see photos and realize that they are behind. That's about the only reason why I could see that they don't want photos of the project out there. It will get interesting if they don't finish in time for the start of basketball season.

This is a good hire for us imo. Under his leadership his teams at Murray State have been successful on the field with 39 conference titles and also have good grades off it with 20 consecutive semesters of having a cumulative GPA of 3.0. He also isn't likely to use ACU as a stepping stone like a young up and comer would.

ACU Names Allen Ward As Ninth Director Of Athletics: https://acusports.com/news/2018/7/16/general-acu-names-allen-ward-as-ninth-director-of-athletics.aspx

I think he's a solid hire. I don't think this hire is on the level of the Ivey hiring, but Ward does have a lot of experience leading a solid athletic program. Plus there's this: When Ward joined MSU athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. If he can get us to where he had Murray State, which was consistently one of the top 3 schools in the conference, and also get student athletes graduated at a high level, then I'll be happy.

Starters returning:

Improvements: Mental toughness has increased.
Offensive mentality: Respect everyone. Fear no one. Try more balanced attack. More run game. Build play action into it.
32 year old coach: Get advice from older staff and bring energy to team.
Air Raid offense implemented? Give quarterback more freedom.
Fertile recruiting ground? Yes. Central Texas is under-recruited.
Facilities: New turf. (track around field)

DB Jamarkese Williams- Confidence is biggest thing you can have. Loves 1 on 1 play. Coach focuses on players as individuals.

OL Terence Hickman II- 2 years left to graduate. Moving fast from play to play. S & C coach has changed environment. Coach Morris gets straight to the point.

Nathan Brown: First year head coach. Former UCA QB.

Returning starters: 11

Offense: 3
Defense: 5
Sp. Teams: 3

Nathan: Expectations set high. Camp starts Aug. 2nd.

Coordinator to head coach challenge: Small details head coach deals with that OC doesn't necessarily deal with.

Growth of UCA from D2 to D1- local growth of city. Unique area for recruiting.

Goals for team: We expect to win. Expectations don't change. Newcomers and returners know this.

After playoff loss: Great season. Guys aren't over the loss. Second round teams aren't good enough for this team. Road games will be tough this year.

Reaction to 3rd place preseason poll after winning conference last year: Preseason polls don't mean much. Just motivation for this year. Shows quality of conference.

Adding Ken Collums: Wanted to surround himself with experience. Valuable to program. Will be inducted into hall of fame at UCA this year. Won natty with UCA in 1991.

QB situation: numerous calls from FBS team QBs wanting to transfer. Didn't field the calls. Happy with our situation. Smith looks like a starter. IT factor. Quality QBs at UCA.

Coaching change: I didn't want to be the convenient choice. I've been preparing since I graduated UCA.

DE Chris Terrell- Easy coach transition. Breylin Smith will fit in no problem. Helping DL get better. Young CBs ready to play. Cardell Best is back.

RB Carlos Blackman- Easy coaching transition. Multiple RBs keeps us fresh. 800 yards. 10 TDs. Work hard.

Nathan Brown: QB situation. As deep as we've ever been at UCA at QB. Kirk Baugh played significant snaps. Besean McCray from Florida too. RBs depth is good. Blackman, Battle, etc. DL has players back from injuries plus recruiting.

Sched: At Tulsa, Murray state at home, AT SLU, AT SHSU, AT SFA, AT MCN...tough road schedule.

From box to sideline: Heavily involved with play calling. Run coach Collums stuff. He was brought here to run his stuff.

Support from community: Tailgating and game support helps.

The Cowboys will have lost out on playing one of the top teams in the country which does have an impact on the McNeese strength of schedule.
I am not sure about going to a 20-game basketball schedule. Some schools need to play more OOC games for paydays. Why was this change made?

I like the eight game schedule as well. Nine is too many, hurts strength of schedule and limits opportunities to schedule FCS teams from other conferences.

Not sure what I think about the 20-game hoops schedule, though it does guarantee an extra D-I home game.

So for the Southland starting in 2021:

8 conference games
1 OVC
1 SWAC or/and
1 or 2 FBS

UCA 2019: Western Kentucky, Hawaii, Austin Peay
UCA 2020: Missouri, Austin Peay
UCA 2021: Arkansas State, OOC, OOC (SWAC?), OOC (OVC?)

I'm guessing SLC teams won't be making long trips to the North, West, or East for that matter. That's why I included the SWAC and OVC. Thoughts?

In football, McNeese has already scheduled games in the near future against in-state powers LSU and ULL. We also have a return match (finally) in Cowboy Stadium against Southern University.

I wonder about how the 8 game rotation will work? Will teams be able to name numerous traditional rivals that don't rotate or will there be a true rotation? For example, if the Louisiana teams name each other as rivals they they only rotate playing half the conference.

Wally Bullington, who was perhaps the central figure in ACU Athletics since 1950, has passed away at age 87. He served ACU for 39 years as a football player, assistant football coach, head football coach and athletics director before retiring in 1988. He began fundraising work as director of athletics emeritus in 2002. As head coach he led us to the 1973 NAIA national title. It would be kinda cool to see how many have gone to the finals or semis. SLC has talented players but getting that overall team chemistry appears to be an issue. Plus playing in that energy draining heat for 2 months doesn't help. xlolx

But here are the SLC runnersup (current and former members both):

1984 La Tech
1986 Ark St.

2011 Sam
2012 Sam

1989 SFA but they had to vacate the runnerups spot.

17 points to be clear and 7 of those points came off a pick that was returned to the 1 yard line in the 4th quarter. That D was VERY good.

I'd take a defense, something SFA has struggled with for a long time.

So our one National Championship appearance in 1989 was #3 SFA (12-1-1) taking on the team of the 80s, #1 Georgia Southern (14-0).

https://gseagles.com/images/2014/8/6/Paulson_1989.jpg

SFA had the defense to win this game, lead by 1st Team All-Americans S: David Whitmore of Daingerfield, Texas (my hometown) who also played LB, (drafted by the NY Giants in the 4th round) and was the 1989 SLC Defensive POY, DE: Keith Melcher as well as All-Conference players DT Roderick Stansell and LB David Temple.

The Jacks defense defended the GS triple option better than anyone all season.

GS had a 36 game home win streak looking for their 3rd NC in 4 years and had been winning all their games by pretty good margins. GS Head Coach Erk Russell would go on to say after the game in the press conference that this SFA team was the finest opponent he had ever seen.

Game started out shaky for the Jacks who couldn't get anything going right with QB Todd Hammel throwing some really bad passes over his receivers with some resulting into INTs (4 INTs). Started out 1 for 7.

The Jacks defense, after getting burned with the triple option on a few plays (resulting in a GS TD) made some great adjustments and really dug in, notably late in the 1st quarter holding GS inside the 5 yard line and on 3rd down caused the QB to fumble, but the fumble fell forward into the end-zone where a GS player recovered it giving GS a 14-0 lead in the 1st.

Hammel finally settled down and the Jacks tied it up 14-14 in the 2nd quarter.

The SFA defense would hold GS to a field goal with GS going back up 17-14 late in the 2nd quarter. GS would get the ball right back inside the SFA 25 yard line when they blocked a punt after SFA went 3 and out. Once again the SFA defense holds GS to a field goal after a tackle for a loss on 3rd down, that resulted in a GS fumble (that GS recovered) to make the FG and the score 20-14 GS.

SFA nail a 53 FG second before halftime to make it 20-17 GS.

SFA would tie it back up early in the 3rd 20-20 with another 53 yard field goal.

In the 3rd quarter that season GS had out scored their opponents 143-0. In this game it was SFA that held GS scoreless in the 3rd. while the Jacks scored themselves making the game 27-20 SFA.

The biggest break for GS would come late in the 3rd quarter when they had driven to the SFA 45 yard line and on 2nd and 9 the SFA defense, lead by LB David Temple swarmed the GS QB for a sack, causing a fumble, that SFA recovered on the GS 45 only to have the referee call the QB down. The replay clearly showed the GS QB was not down and the ball was out, but no replay back then to over turn it. GS would score on that drive early in the 4th making the score 27-27.

More than halfway through the 4th SFA would regain the lead on a 46 yard strike to RB: Larry Centers for a TD, 34-27 SFA.

GS tied it up for the 4th time at 34 with 5:00 minutes left to play.

Hammel would throw another pick his 4th. GS would go on to get another field goal and won 37-34.

So 4 INTS and a BLK didn't help the SFA defense in this one and they still held their own.

Doesn't matter as SFA was later hit with NCAA penalties for secondary infractions erasing the Title Game in 1989.

Yes, I would take a dominating defense with an average offense any day.

I know that even with a REALLY solid defense and decent offense you can still lose, but wonder how much our southern style of offensive dominated play has changed? To be honest, we have to be great on all sides to come out on top at the end of the playoffs. I like seeing some of the historic answers here from times past. I still hope that we are becoming both more balance and deeper as a conference over-all. I'll say it all day long... a 93-68 playoff game can be fun for an afternoon, but when BOTH of those teams fail to make to the final game, let alone win it???....It's time for change.

Hey! It doesn’t look too dirty now. I’m sure it’s going to look much better on TV.

Yes, it is a big improvement. I think it probably looks even better from a different view. It will be hard to see how much better it looks on TV, though, since it will be packed with Cowboys fans.

It all does indeed look very good. I can't help but think all of that will help give renewed pride and make it harder for us visitors to win on your home turf.

I am excited to have Rowdy choose to sign with us. Part of me thinks he can be one of our biggest pick ups of this recruiting class.

The stands look really good, but the most exciting feature, as you know, is the new turf. The old stuff was responsible for slips and falls and injuries. However, Coach Guidry jokingly lamented losing the old turf which he and some of the players referred to as the 12 Man (Please do not report him to Texas A&M!), as it racked up "tackles" in every game. Unfortunately, many of those takedowns were against us.

Rowdy? That is the name of the McNeese mascot! I thought maybe he had turned traitor on us! xlolx
