This might be a bad question to ask, as it is still early, but what are the expectations in Hammond this season?Obviously Southeastern has been a “middle of the pack” SLC team since the 2014 season and haven’t made the playoffs since. The talent seems to be there but with this new coach, is SELA a team you could see hanging around and competing for the conference title? Or a potential at large bid?

Roberts was a hell of a coach and I am near shocked he stuck around as long as he did. What he did with those Bennett teams was special. Lots of respect for those two seasons, even though they knocked out my team one year. But Southeastern being good is overall good for the SLC.

Expectations are high. We have a lot coming back (especially offensively) and some pretty good pieces coming in. Obviously the coaching change will mean a shift in philosophy and possibly culture, but to what effect is TBD. Frank Scelfo has never been a head coach, but has a very good reputation as a developer of QBs (Nick Foles, Patrick Ramsey, J.P. Losman in college, Blake Bortles w/ the Jaguars) and we return our OC (Greg Stevens) from 2013, who did a great job with Bryan Bennett. We'll have a different look offensively, but I expect that side of the ball to be as good, or better than 2017. We lost some pieces on defense, but have some good young talent returning, and have some transfers coming in. We hired a 20-year NFL coaching veteran as DC (Louie Cioffi), and have mostly new staff on that side of the ball (DL coach returns). It'll be interesting to see how the transition develops.

Today is ACU footballs’ junior day, plus we’ll also have a scrimmage at Wildcat Stadium. Over 150 high school players plus our 2018 signing class will be visiting the campus and will be at the game.

Yep, spring game with the winds shifting to the north at 22+mph. I might be hiding in the club level once that starts... I was looking at Bear's sharing of their Mudbugs and Bears advertisement and thinking how nice it would be to have Perini's come out and supply steaks for a Cows and Cats spring game menu xthumbsupx

Our spring game went pretty well I would say. There were 168 HS recruits there to watch a good game with some really nice plays. A couple of notes: WR DJ Fuller is back this year after missing last season and is a man on a mission; look for him to have a big year. OLB Qua’Shawn Washington was moved to defense after spending last year on offense and he looks very natural there and will likely be the starter. He had 10 TKLS and an INT in the game. QB Luke Anthony has taken a step forward and plays inside himself and the offense and just makes the smart play. Honestly this team just looks so much better than last years team, even with a few key players being injured. They still have work to do but I think we could be a decent team this season. Hope everyone has had at least ONE chance to watch a practice/game or two this spring. After watching them, where do you think your team will end up in the standings?

I'll go. I think we will end up 3rd. We have a lot of individual talent but the chemistry doesn't appear to be there. I know its early so this is just a guess. I just don't get that confident 1st or second place feel like I have the past two years.

Thoughts?

After watching several practices and the Spring game I agree with many of our fellow Cat chatters. We have moved a lot in the right direction as far as fundamentals and talent go. We have gotten some talent back we lost last year for academic reasons and brought in some new ones. Our defense continues to be our strongest tool. They will still be fairly stout. Our offense is moving the ball better behind a much improved OL, even though there is still growing room. Most of us still want more depth at several positions. Although I don't think I would predict our rank based off of what we have seen, most of us think a .500 or so season is achievable. The questions are, how bad do we get banged up and what luck comes our way??

***I would add that our first two OOC games will be hard to make too big of predictions off of as we go from an FBS match to an old DII rivalry match...***

This will be the make-or-break year for Nicholls. See if they've actually turned the corner as a team or are only capable of a few above average seasons each decade. If they've truly improved, I can see them challenging the Bears as well.

True. But they will have to challenge us in the standings alone because we don't play them this year. Next year we go to their house. If Fourcade is back for his senior year it will be tough but they lost some serious talent this year and lose even more next. This year may be Fourcades best chance.

I also say third place because we travel to McNeese, SHSU, SLU, ACU, and SFA. We also don't have Hildebrand. It will be a tough year. I will travel to one or two road games.

Well, I didn't see any practices as we didn't have any scheduled scrimmages and no spring game because we didn't have enough healthy offensive linemen. But I heard that we are going to suck next season especially on defense.

Nah, we watched the slip n' slide for several years now and it is not fun. Coach Guidry called it our 12th man on defense. Only trouble was it tackled our own players, too. That and there were a few injuries caused by the turf.

Are you going to have to go green with new turf or are you grandfathered in with the purple and grey? I thought I heard somewhere where they aren't allowing colored turf anymore but don't know the veracity of that.

Its a few years down the road but I can imagine they will be grandfathered in with the stripes. I want green though.

It was not fun. Besides slip and slide, there were uneven spots. Our turf had more tackles than our defense did in some games almost. Ask Doc and others about the injuries that the turf contributed to.
This field is a major step up and will be a very welcome addition.

SFA spring game cancelled this Saturday due to bad weather.

Moving it from 6:00 to 3:00 and turning it into a 90 play practice to close out the spring. (No ESPN+)

The ACU Football team completed their annual Wildcat Spring Clean Up today. Jacks ALWAYS seem to have the talent. Never seems like they can do anything with it. 2014 is the perfect example. Made the playoffs. They should at least make the playoffs once every few years. Maybe Conque can do something with the talent this time around, but I doubt it. How long will SFA wait to get a new coach. He is doing much worse at SFA than he did at UCA. With the exception of one year, very underwhelming. UCA is doing better without Conque. Maybe SFA isn’t that much better of a program than UCA...

With the exception of maybe one or two bad season, the Bears have had no issues without Conque. SFA needs to dump him if they win less than 7 games.

We are getting a new AD as Robert Hill is retiring after this academic year, so we will see how things pan out.

But yes this team is loaded with experience, talent, and depth like I have never seen before.

If we can’t win with this group I don’t see Conque back.

But if the season is a disaster we will get over it pretty quick, as basketball season is always soon to follow xsmiley_wix

So how are things looking for the rest of ya'll with injuries and other stuff after Spring ball is over? We had two top RBs out with some leg injuries and the 3rd RB stepping in pretty nice. One injury was our new transfer. They should all be really good by Fall as the coaches were being careful with them throughout the Spring. One of our new DE transfers ended up with a knee injury and not yet sure about him for the Fall. One TE will also be healing, but suspect he will be active in the Fall. Some of our other fans could probably give better info. If I read correctly we may have gained a couple of scholarships. I know the coaches learned a lot from Spring and have been on the road heavily since then to prepare for Summer practices and Fall.

Yeah, I imagine most injuries in the spring will heal by the fall unless it is something more serious. I haven't heard any Bear players seriously injured. Just some typical strains etc you get when you practice again after a short break. xbowx

No way. I was a HUGE fan of his the past two seasons. I thought he'd have a shot at going pro at some level. This sucks. 14 tackles per game. He lit us up. Sad. Rest in peace.

Awful - I looked at the building on Google Maps - pool in the center of an small enclosed courtyard of a 4 story high apartment complex. No idea what happened, but that is not, IMO, necessarily, an ideal structural setup if it houses a large population of college students - certainly not with public roof access.

BTW & off-topic, but, unfortunately, related - Was there ever any news published as to what happened in the death of the Rice DE, Blain Padgett, just a few months ago?

Just so awful to have 2 outstanding way-too YOUNG men & outstanding college football players pass away from unknown/uncertain/unusual circumstances in the same city within a couple of months of each other. 2 Car accidents, hunting accidents, jeez even violence/shootings, or 1 each of those, while still awful, could be somewhat understood in a large city like Houston, but these just seem eerie (or something, I don’t know what to call it) to me.

RIP to the young men & prayers for their family, teammates, and friends.

Well damn, SFA has such a good “game day experience”, just too bad it doesn’t translate to winning.

Sam gets two decent crowds per year. Parents weekend and a late round playoff game (if we host). Other than that...6000 is about right. Oh and the BOTPW.

And Huntsville is stuck too close to TAMU and UH, while also having a significant commuter student population. It is what it is..

the thing I like this year is that Collums runs a very complex offense that takes a while to learn. I doubt other teams see his whole playbook this year.

That's pretty impressive....Lunges with 405, and at first blush I was a little concerned about his technique, but I realized he's got an interesting contraption there that makes it easy to deal with the weight without having to use your hands...

not sure of his total range of motion, but - still - that's a lot of weight to be using for that sort of lift...

A lot of business going on I'm sure, but ACU had a great day of hosting mega camp. University and scout reps from all over the board were here to watch recruits and prospects run through drills. Hopefully it was good exposure.

I think we will be a much improved team though. Like the article said Dorrel is getting his recruits in place and every player on the team actually now wants to be here, which we couldn't say last year. Also we've got around 100 players here during the summer which will help a lot with that cohesion.

I was surprised when I saw the story. I really didn't think it would happen this fast. Whatever the investigation reveals, Ryan obviously wasn't gonig to waste time. Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, I hope it doesn't negatively affect the team too badly. It is a calculated risk to make a bold move like this right before Fall camp, but I guess it could also pay off. It will take a lot to build that team and make that talent a seamless unit. The talent is there for sure.

I’m gonna guess SFA will one of these reasons to justify dumping a coach without paying a buy out. It happened so fast that my guess is the new AD was told before he was hired that he needed to find a reason to get rid of Conque as soon as possible.

The fans want SFA Alumnus and current Associate Head/RB Coach at Arkansas Jeff Traylor
and also mentioned Texas A&M - Commerce Head Coach Colby Carthel (Who Ryan Ivey hired in his brief time in Commerce.)

Interesting choices. Traylor comes with great connections in Texas high schools but limited collegiate coaching experience. Carthel has TAMUC on fire but comes with NCAA baggage from his WTAMU and ACU days, as well as questions about whether he can recruit stellar athletes who meet minimum D1 academic standards, which are higher than for D2.

I think he has it right with the relationship part. The difficulty is with the transfers who haven't built relationship with SFA staff yet and could be prone to poor relationships that may have prompted transferring to begin with. Time will tell, but yes, the players need to focus on time to get to work and move on from there.

Nicholls plays Kansas and Tulane. Two not very good FBS teams, but still FBS schools. A W over either would help, but Nicholls will be an underdog in both games. Still, a team that almost beat mighty the UGA Bulldogs between the hedges could surprise either or both the Jayhawks and Green Wave.

Sam plays Prairie View and North Dakota. North Dakota, blah. Prairie View is somewhat better but not a real strong SOS here. Even so, Sam gets extra consideration because of its history of playoff success. Taking care of business gets Sam in.

McNeese plays Northern Colorado and BYU. Northern Colorado is a not so good Big Sky team. The Pokes will be an underdog vs BYU. 1-1 is expected and won’t help much unless they blow out Northern Colorado.

UCA plays Tulsa and Murray State. Tulsa is a struggling FBS program and Murray State is a bottom feeder in the Ohio Valley Conference. Going 2-0 here would boost the resume though.

You can downplay Northern Colorado and BYU all you want but they are a step up from Florida Tech and Alcorn State last year. A win against either will help. I agree with Tripper, any FBS win is highly considered by the committee.

It wasn’t my intent to downplay BYU or to suggest a W over any FBS team wouldn’t be a boost. The U is a very respectable team. A W there will certainly help.

Truth is often painful but preferable to blowing smoke. What you speak is truth. Even if we aren’t in playoff contenon, we could still hurt your chances of a playoff spot.

ACU and the other conference expansion schools have done just that to date. This fact makes it all the more imperative for those of you at the top of the conference to make an impression OOC.

i hope the SLC gets three bids this year. The point was raised that whether this happens or not depends on how potential playoff schools do OOC. I was simply looking at the OOC schedules for those of you in the running for a playoff spot and offering one guy’s opinion about outlook. Hopefully we will do our part to help y’all by not being blown out by Baylor or playing poorly against Angelo State.

if we are going to hurt your playoff chances I wold rather it be by beating you on the field than by our overall lousy SOS.

I don't know why so many people think that Nicholls was that much better than McNeese last season. I still say if the game was them wasn't the first game of the season and on a Thursday night, we would have been them. And, at least, we beat SLU late in the season. Nicholls didn't. The Nicholls game is definitely a game circled on our schedule this season.

People tend to forget the blowout in Huntsville last year also. Close losses against A&M and South Dakota has them in the driver's seat in the SLC to many folks this season. There is a really good chance they start off the season 0-4.

Looks like UCA takes a big hit on the O-line losing Cook as a graduate transfer and Mallett is leaving football to be a coach.

The purple helmets from last year are going away too.........they are going to a flat purple that matches the uniform better. In the pic see the sleeves and that is more of the purple it will be. Supposed to have the same logo from last year and no stripes.

Then..........there is supposed to be a Gray helmet with logo on one side and number on the other with possibly a stripe. This will coincide with a possible Gray Uniform.

I understand there may be a gun metal black helmet to boot but have not seen that for sure. I did hear that the facemask on the Black Helmet or maybe the gray helmet will be Metallic purple.

ACU has actually worked hard to get our APR back up to that sad level. I almost spewed when I saw us lower than Texas State.... Dorrel used to let his football players put their GPA on their helmets if they had a 3.2 or higher when he was at NWMSU. ACU has replaced several coaches and staff that didn't take academics seriously. Our athletes deserve better.
