View Full Version : 2017/18 FBS Bowl Season

The bowl matchups have been announced.

Do you feel sad at Ohio State settling for a New Year's Six Bowl instead of the CFP?

On the other hand, wow. UAB and New Mexico State are both bowling... unbelievable. The NMSU Aggies are in their first bowl game since 1960 (though they were bowl-eligible in 2002, but were not selected). The UAB Blazers, in only their first season back, are in the postseason.

If you think the FBS is immune from the snub system in the FCS playoff selection, think again. Three bowl-eligible teams were snubbed: UTSA, Buffalo and WMU.

New Mexico State faced the second easiest schedule in the country and only could muster 6 wins. The teams they beat have a combined 11 wins against FBS competition, most of those against each other. That's how easy it is to qualify for a bowl game in the FBS. The FCS equivalent would be Campbell earning a bowl bid. xsmhx Their game against Utah State, another hapless team, will be one of the least quality bowl games ever. Luckily for the viewing public, no one will be forced to watch it considering it's on CBS Sports.

There are some good ones out there, though. Outside of the playoffs, Ohio State vs. USC is very intriguing. Also, Stanford vs. TCU should be great. I'm interested in seeing what a defensive power like Auburn could do against UCF and their offense.

Smaller conference wise, I think Troy got screwed with their matchup. They should be in the de facto Sun Belt/MAC championship game against Toledo instead of App St, especially considering the game is in Alabama. Instead they have to play North Texas in Louisiana.

That App/Toledo game is going to be great to watch though. It's a rematch of last year's Camellia Bowl with then MAC#2 Toledo losing by a field goal to SBC CoChamp App. It will also be the only game on at the time, Saturday Dec. 23rd at 8pm on the flagship.

There's even more bowl games this year. There's even a bowl game in Frisco before the real Natty; hopefully they don't tear the turf up too much.

The Frisco Bowl is the old Miami Bowl. The bowl organization moved it to be closer to the western AAC schools.

Oh, I thought they made up a new one....Since SMU is one of the teams, they should have just played it at SMU's decent ~35,000 seat stadium vice Frisco's 20,000 person soccer stadium.

That's a quality matchup but 3 straight trips to "meh" Alabama cities to play MAC schools? Those have been Appalachian State's rewards lol.

The Packers-Vikings at Lambeau is at the same time and with Rodgers likely return that game will get the majority of the attention.

Actually, there is one less FBS bowl game this year than the past two years. 39 plus the fake championship is still too many, but at least it's moving in the right direction.

The "rewards" have matched the game play. Have to run the table with the competition App plays to get a shot at a NY6 bowl. Boise was at home for 3 bowls in a row before they got rolling. App fans have traveled well to Montgomery two years in a row. Mobile offers a much nicer destination with a Mardi Gras level parade, great game time/date/competition/channel. Word from an App alumnus that works out of the Charlotte espn office is this game will be marketed as champ vs champ. Should draw some attention from casual college fans. The Sun Belt has good tie-ins for bowls that are easy to travel to (minus Arizona; but that bowl will eventually be switched with a bowl in Myrtle Beach or Charleston). New Orleans and Orlando are both targets of App fans. An undefeated Sun Belt conference record will land App in NO and a very mediocre record (6-6 or 7-5) would probably land them in Orlando.

At least there is no NFL Thursday night game that night. (That week's Thursday night game will be played on Saturday night, and is the Vikings/Packers game mentioned up-thread.)

Meanwhile, there are some Temple fans on the Temple Scout board that think the Owls' bowl losses the last two seasons overshadowed or were more important than their AAC East Division title, win over Penn State, and close, nationally televised game with Notre Dame (2015), or their AAC Championship (2016). xcrazyx

Temple easily took care of Florida International in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl. The 7-6 season is nice but the bowl game itself wasn't very good. There couldn't have been more then 15k people there.

I have to give props to App State for hammering Toledo 34-0. No one saw that coming given the Rockets usual pedigree. That's a good win for the Mountaineer program as they continue to separate themselves from Georgia Southern in FBS.

The officiating in the Northwestern-UK game was literally the worst I've seen all year! That crew should be required to work high school games only in 2018 to earn some credibility back!

Ohio State is taking it to USC so far. The Trojans have been soft the last 7-8 years. I've seen Darnold numerous times and he does not look like a 1st pick. I honestly like Allen from Wyoming the most. The Browns will probably take Darnold...lol

Iowa State hadn't lost a fumble all season. I said going into it that it would be hilarious if they lost a fumble on the last drive of the bowl game and it cost them the game.

Didn't quite turn out that way. They lost their first fumble of the season with 4 minutes to go in the bowl game, while reaching to break the plane for a TD. (I still think the ball broke the plane while he still had control, but there wasn't a clear enough angle to overturn the call on the field).

I thought he broke the plane too, but the replay didn't give a definite picture. Really something to go through the entire season without a fumble and then have that happen. Lazard is a great receiver- and the former QB that they moved to linebacker to become an All-American was something. They brought him in to run the Wildcat- he probably should have been in on the goal line.

Miss State surprised me since their QB got hurt in the Egg Bowl. Their QB started hot, then made some mistakes but they still beat Louisville.

Penn State is dominating Washington, yet made two mistakes and gave up two TDs to give the Huskies some hope.

It's been over saturated. As a fan or alum how can you justify spending $$$ ever year to attend a bowl game that really doesn't mean much? "Back in the day" their was some exclusiveness to it. Plus, the matchups just felt, bigger and better because the season ended on NYD and the voting would commence that night. When you woke up the next day you would find out where your team finished.

If Temple made the Peach Bowl I'd go. However I'm not wasting money during the holidays to go see the Boca Bowl or Gaspirilla Bowl.

I think there's some debate there too. IMO, the FCS playoffs are also watered down with 24 teams. D2 has become far too regionalized in terms of selecting the of quality teams.

FBS would be so much better off with about 12-15 less bowls. I like the bowl system in general. One thing that has hurt these major bowls that gets overlooked is the venues. The Title Game is set, Alabama vs Georgia. The dreaded all SEC Title game will happen. The talking heads should eat this up. Alabama has to be the favorite but Georgia's running game is insane. I hope like hell the 'Dawgs pull it off...

He won't leave Michigan until they get past Ohio State. The man bleeds too much maize and blue to quit on the program. With that said, the Wolverines haven't quite as good as I figured. Still, 2 10 win seasons and were in the playoff mix until the OT loss to OSU last year. Michigan won't fire him unless the wheels really come off.

Not only that, but the game is in Atlanta, which is essentially a home game for both teams.

The good news for non-SEC fans is that at least this isn’t a rematch. UGA and Bama haven’t played this season.

I wonder if Frost can turn Nebraska around?

I imagine he will bring his type of offense to Lincoln....spread it out and pass. Good fit for the Cornhuskers?

I mean, they may claim it, but G5 teams aren't going to make a four team playoff unless they play the big boys in their nonconference schedules. UCF's out of conference schedule included FIU, Austin Peay, and Maryland. Only 3 AAC teams even ended the season ranked in the top 25.

Every few years you see a non-P5 school put together an outstanding season and try to claim a piece of the pie. The reality is that if these teams want an outside shot at the biggest games, they need to start playing and beating power teams in the regular season. It may not be fair, but its the reality of it.

Two years ago a 3 win Furman team beat UCF at home. That may be all you need to know about how far he brought that program in two seasons.

He's taking his entire staff at UCF with him to Nebraska. Give him a couple years to rebuild the roster and they will be rolling.

Monopoly money at this point.

I realized the difference between the haves and have nots in college football when I saw Alabama get off the airplane in New Orleans before the Sugar Bowl.

It's about a 4 hour drive from Tuscaloosa to New Orleans and they took an private plane.

Schools like Bama differentiate themselves from other P5s also. UGA also flew in style. https://www.ajc.com/news/local/check-out-the-plane-uga-took-the-rose-bowl-fly-style-here-georgia/WLpMT3LsT6FYZplU55z3OP/

I agree that certain P5s can use that money for toilet paper if they wanted, but it's not a fact for all P5s. A number of P5s and certainly the G5s appreciate that free yearly payout. For G5s, that's around a million per school before the OOC wins are considered (Also, the conference that gets the access bowl gets a little more obviously). For conferences like the Sunbelt who are already used to working without a ton of outside guaranteed revenue, this is part of our yearly compensation for having a pulse. As a fan, I always like to see my school get money. On a side note, why pay FCS schools at all if its only going to be $2 million for the entire league? That's kind of a slap in the face when split into the ~125 schools.

I think the $2.5 million split between 9 conferences was the same under the BCS payout system. I think they kept it in place because $2 million is pocket change.

Hard to believe that a defensive coordinator would make more than 80 of the 130 head coaches in the FBS.

Dava Aranda will make more than 80 FBS head coaches to coordinate LSU D. Never more money in the system. What's the push back when players (who already get paid via COA and bowl gifts for starters) don't get paid enough?

I’ve started noticing this recently, but its like there are literally hundreds of folks on both sidelines. Players, coaches, staffs, former players, VIPs.

Well with the only two teams to beat New England at their home turf this millennium, I am going to say no. Had my Ravens not choked it away, they would be the most likely candidate having won 2 and lost 2 there. The Jets are the other team having won 1 game there.
