I've noticed that Streveler is running a lot less recently. Any Yotes fans have insight on that? Are they trying to protect him a bit? Seems like he's still been just as good through the air as he was earlier in the season but NDSU has not been good against the QB run this year so if USD has taken that aspect out of their offense to a certain extent I think that's advantage NDSU.

Then again I thought SDSU couldn't beat NDSU either without Christion going nuts on the ground and he shredded them through the air so what do I know?

From NDSU's perspective I hope their offense rediscovers the short passing game to get Stick back on track and in a rhythm rather than force him to throw the slow developing intermediate/deep routes that have gotten him in trouble recently. The defense also needs to get back to their pre-SDSU form rushing the passer, they blitzed and didn't get home far too many times down in Brookings.

Same ? as the Prof. asked, is Streveler hurt, or are they just trying to avoid injury?

Would like to see some more running attempts by the RBs, lets let them get into a rhythm.

From what I gather he’s banged up. But he can chuck it too. I think Bison by a bundle but if they don’t figure out how to contain the qb in the pocket so they can’t extend the play it could be one hell of a game. I expect a game like the Marker games when SDSU just had one extremely good offensive threat. The bison are really good at taking out one thing and making you beat them with the other.

I watched a lot of the second half of the UNI/South Dakota game last week. He definitely looks hurt; believe he was favoring his leg and then it got significantly worse after he was hit running out of bounds shortly before he threw the INT in the end zone with SD up 3 that probably cost his team the game.

My feeling is that SD may struggle with the physical size of NDSU, but to answer your original question, I would describe it as painful to watch Streveler trying to move around with how hurt he looked. It seemed to definitely impact his play in the time I saw, though credit also to Northern Iowa's defense.

Two things......and they are key for the long haul:

1) Easton Stick is not Carson Wentz: Yeah....i know....captain obvious. You couldn't tell though based on what they want stick to do. The Bison need to go back to having a "game manager" QB.....dont beat yourself....protect the ball.....run the ball....

2) Bruce needs to do his best Dunn impersonation: It would be different if I could trust the health of Ty Brooks.....but Bruce needs to carry the load. Win TOP.....see point one.

That's it....the Bison D handles their own if those two happen. Will it? TBD........

From what I saw him endure in ISUr game, I wouldn't be surprised if he is still hurting from our game ... just 2 sacks, but 15 QBHs .. which is more QBHs than he has had in all other 8 games combined. Following week against SIU, he left game during 1st series after just 1 run.

In 3 games since our game ... against ISUr he rushed 8 times for 29 yards (22 on 1 play); SIU game just the 1 rush for 1 yard, and he left game immediately; UNI game just 5 rushes for -1 yards

Prior to ISU game .. he played 6 games, rushed 98 times for 448 yards for 4.57 ypc. So he averaged 16 carries and 75 yards per game before ISUr game.

I'm guessing he also got a banged up 2 weeks prior to our game against YSU ... ran a lot, got sacked several times, but not a lot of yards to show for it .. so he was getting hit a lot against YSU too.

So I would say he is very banged up and/or playing is much more conservatively.

He was injured in the SIU game I believe. He looked good most of the game against us. There was one play mentioned earlier when he got hit going out of bounds and was limping really badly for the rest of the drive. The got taped up before the next drive, and then seemed to still have a little bit of giddy up left. I would say he is probably nursing a nagging injury and him not running is due to that.

However, concerning for USD is how much he has had to throw recently. 63 attempts against ISUr and then 51 against UNI. In their wins he was usually around 33 attempts. So if NDSU forces him to throw a ton I think they will dominate the game.

NDSU's keys to win the game:

1. Don't turn the ball over 5 times.
2. RUN THE DAMN BALL!
3. Contain Streveler
4. RUN THE DAMN BALL!

I think NDSU is going to win this game but not necessarily because of the matchups. I think USD is starting to become like they have been in the past, much better at home then on the road. The Coyotes bread and butter is throwing the football or having Streveler run on his own. Both of those things seems to be the best way to attack NDSU's defense. USD's runningbacks are mediocre. Kai Henry is the best back but he has trouble holding onto the football so he won't play as much as his talent says he should. Frederick and any other running back for that matter won't do much of anything against the Bison I would suspect. If the Coyotes keep their no huddle in over drive that will be their best chance. As the season has worn on the offense has slowed down a little and if it does against the Bison it will favor NDSU. If USD gets the hurry up clicking though it can be very dangerous.

The Coyotes are actually pretty good against the run and I believe gave up less then 60 yards rushing to UNI. I think the Coyotes will do fairly well stopping the Bison run.

I believe the intangibles favor NDSU big here. They are going to be quite motivated to avenge the loss to SDSU and to avenge the loss last time the Coyotes came to Fargo. This is one of those games where the energy level will really be big for the Bison and I believe they will have many of the bounces of the ball go their way. I am going 31-14 NDSU.

If they keep Streveler from running and extending plays like TC did they defend the pass pretty well. Those scramble plays are what seems to give our defense fits.

I think NDSU is going to play pissed off after their loss to SDSU, not to mention this being senior day and the last home game of the season.

I don't think Streveler is anywhere near 100%, and that doesn't bode well going up against NDSU's defense.

I'll go 35-13 Bison.

I'm not sure if they are trying to protect him by not running as much. It seems like he is looking to throw longer than trying to scramble after the first read. He has been sliding instead of lowering his head on runs in the last 2-3 weeks. Stev looked to injur his ankle against UNI, but then outran 2 defenders to the outside to get a crucial first down in the 4th quarter before throwing the INT in the endzone on the run/pass option. He always seems to be a bit nicked up, but then still puts on the jets when he needs them. He will start versus the Bison.

I wonder if the coaching staff has pulled the reins in just a little bit. He is too important to have him lowering his head. Even though the backup QB is capable, there is a reason that he is #2 on the depth chart. Part of me thinks that the SDSU staff had a similar conversation with TC.

If he's hurt that's a different story but if they're not running him to protect him from a potential injury that's a fine line the coaches are walking. NDSU seems to try to protect Stick the same way. It's frustrating to see him give the ball on the read option when you can see that the keep is wide open. Running the ball is what makes guys like Streveler and Stick truly lethal (although Streveler is a better passer) but it's tough to allow them to use their natural running ability and protect them from injury at the same time since the QB doesn't generally go out of the game after a big run or taking a big hit.

Yes and yes. A loss likely drops NDSU to #7 at best and a win probably bumps them back up to #3 or #2 (although we won't know for sure since the committee doesn't release rankings this week - we'll just hafta go with the AGS poll :)).

If the Bison were to lose one of the last two then I think they would be in the 5 to 8 seed range and on the road for the quarterfinals.

I still think that a 10-1 Bison team with an outright MVFC championship should be a 1 or 2 seed (2 if JMU finishes undefeated).

I am not so sure that even if the Bison win out that the committee will rank them in the #2 spot. I feel they will end up in #3 probably. However, even in the #3 spot I would feel good about the Bison ending up with home field as I believe the #2 (either JSU or Central AR) would be upset in the 2nd or 3rd round, thus allowing NDSU to host a potential semi final game at the dome. I don't see JMU dropping a regular season game in the last two so they get #1 and I also see them going to the championship game. If the football gods and the selection committee are against NDSU (and they just might be), the Bison quite possibly will be left in the #4 spot so that they will be forced to travel to JMU.

The committee already has justified it it. The Bison are ranked #4 right now. How many times do us Bison fans expect the selection committee to jump the Bison into the 1-2 spot at the last ranking year after year? The MVFC may thought of as the best, but this year it is down. YSU and UNI probably don't make the playoffs, USD might go into a tail spin at the end of the season with 4 total losses, ISU-r is not looking to hot, and WIU might choke and put itself on the bubble as well. MVFC could end up with NDSU at 1 loss, second place at 2-3 losses, third at 3-4 losses (probably 3), and a whole bunch of teams at 4-5 losses (ISU, YSU, UNI, WIU). And they are not going to let 7 teams in with that kind of conference standings, 3 at best get in. Heck, USD could lose today and next week and have 4 losses and probably be out of the playoffs due to a very poor record at the end of the season. My point being though, that MVFC could end up with only 1 team in the top ten (but probably 2) and after that, the rest of the conference looks very average at best.

That is the best hope they have. Force them to run the ball and contain Streveler. I'd keep rushing 3 or 4 each time and make them keep it on the ground with disguised blitzes thrown in to keep Streveler weary of this D.

Oh and holy Illegal Blocks in the Backs.

No they are just the usual awful MVFC refs that NDSU gets blessed with.

Where was this offense last week? Honestly, this is the most hot and cold Bison team I have seen since 2010.

Seth Wilson with a #BeastMode style run!

21-7 NDSU

11:11 left in the 2nd Q

Not sure why they need to have a 5 minute conversation every time.

They are under center running and passing instead of being totally predictable.

I hope they don't sit back and play not to lose the 2nd half....That is a recipe for doom

But to make this big of a swing, this quickly, should frustrate Bison fans everywhere. If they continue this way, I don't see how they don't jump back up in the standings.

FBS VS FCS. They will get "big time games" more right than the lowly "D2" subdivision of the FCS.

Some thoughts after the game:

- Steveler is a very good football player and he is tough. He is USD's whole offense...period.

- Bison offense woke up and played like they can. Easton made some good decisions and didn't force anything.

- USD's defense didn't show me anything in this game. They stacked the box on obvious running downs but the Bison passing game made them back off of that.

- Ty Brooks is very good. He gets to full speed after a couple of steps. Great tandem with Bruce.

- Defense played decent. Bent a lot of kept USD out of the endzone.

Good game before the last one down in Normal. Looking forward to going down there and watching the Bison wrap up sole possession of the conference.

Brooks for NDSU is the real deal, IMNHO, he is the top back for the Bison.

Streveler is interesting, I have no idea what his arm strength is and I have seen him play a lot. Is he NFL material, I don't believe he has anywhere near the arm strength to make it to the next level, his deep balls were not impressive, he has a super quick release and is tough as nails, but I don't know. He is playing offense by himself for USD and "willing" every drive and score they get.

At 6ft 2in, 220, he is perfect for LB as he knows the offensive side of the ball but has the speed and trucking ability to play that (M)LB position that requires those mechanics. Otherwise, he would be a "short" TE at that size. I could see him play on Sundays, but not at the QB position.

He's fast, what about SS?

It is a possibility but I think he would be better at LB due to his agility and abilities to cover distances quick, and traditionally, key word is traditionally, but the SS is meant to be a "run-stuffing" safety who can move from the Deep 2 position to the line and clog the lanes and if I was going to draft him, I would want that leadership he brings, which means he is going to be a LB as they are the ones who call the plays for the defense and check out of reads based on formations.

I know what the NFL rolls out since they thought Kaepernick was a decent QB, and he is god awful. How about Blaine Gabert, Brandon Weeden, Jake Locker, Johnny Cokehead, etc... All of these guys had 1 thing in common, 1st round busts who never panned out. Look at each of their frames though. 6-4 235, 6-3 230, 6-3 234, and 6-1 210. Each one of these guys, given the chance, could have played LB though. Maybe not Cokehead boy since that would bruise his ego, but Gabert and Locker would have been badass LBs had they been converted to LBs or secondary players.

No they are not, they should have beat UNI, you were lucky to get a win there but they are a one trick pony, no doubt about it and a big time pager tiger on D.

They folded under pressure against UNI. UNIs defensive plan worked. Yes they gave up yards but look at the TOs they forced with that plan. Force Strevler to drop back 60 plus times. Don’t let him run and catch DBs with their backs turned. Force him to avoid making mistakes, which he’s struggled to do the last month.

They got crushed by NDSU

I won’t be shocked to see them lose to SDSU.

Their wins are
3-8 North Dakota
2-8 Bowling Green
5-4 Drake who offers zero scholarships
0-10 Indiana State
4-6 Southern Illinois
5-5 Youngstown State
7-3 western Illinois

Their one good win was 2 months ago

They’ll go 0-3 against the top 3 teams in the league if they lose to SDSU (NDSU, SDSU, UNI). They lost to Illinois State who will finish 4th or 5th. Depending how time breaks fall it’s entirely possible that USD will not have beaten a team that finishes in the top half of the conference.

Are they a bad team? Nah.
Are they as good as we all had them ranked based on beaten up on the dregs of the FCS/MVFC? 100% hell no.

I fell for it. I had them at #1 for a few weeks. I’d leave them out of the playoffs at 7-4 and 4-4. They’d have nothing on their resume over the last 2 months that would tell me they are a playoff team. They’d be 1-3 vs playoff teams in conference(the win was early September and playoffs are after thanksgiving), finish 5th or 6th in conference play (tie breakers could leave them behind YSU yet), and have lost 4 of their last 5

No, none of these guys could have played LB's in the NFL, these freaking guys that play LB's in the NFL are monsters, these "good" athletes you think could play LB in the NFL are not going to play LB in the NFL.

Streveler is not going to play LB or freaking secondary in the NFL,

If someone thought Kaepernick playing QB was a great idea, then anything is possible.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkThey will lose to SDSU, I agree with your comments regarding keeping him in the pocket and making him throw, he is far more dangerous outside of the pocket, I don't think he has real decent arm strength. NDSU let him out of the pocket a few times tonight and he hurt them but we didn't get any turnovers, could you imagine how bad the NDSU USD game would have been if USD had turned the ball over 2 or 3 times, it could have been 70 to 14. Their D is weak, I am not going to jump on the NDSU Offensive resurgence bandwagon just yet, but I pretty much agree with you that they are a paper tiger but they are a paper tiger that should have beaten you guys.

This. the LB position in the NFL is borderline ludacris.

If the Yotes lose this weekend they should not be rewarded with a playoff spot. That resume is really average, like Clenz pointed out.

Yeah, I didn't realize it was that shaky....I guess.

I also agree that the playoffs start Saturday for the Yotes, if they lose they are done.

It rally depends on what else happens IMO. I think USD could still get in with a loss. Say at 7-4 they're up against a 9-2 Kennesaw St or a 9-2 McNeese (both have a D2 win so they're more like 8-2). That FBS win over Bowling Green, even though Bowling Green is bad by FBS standards, will play for them. The committee loves FBS wins and I doubt any bubble teams they go up against will have that.

I agree. I think even with a loss, they've got a decent shot at making the field. Look where they fell on the most recent committee rankings. Losing to two top ten teams in the final two weeks shouldn't make them fall all the way out. Especially if they put up more of a fight against SDSU, which I suspect they will.

Western, Youngstown, and Bowling Green should all be looked at as decent wins for them. And they don't have any bad losses.

49-14 seems like a pretty bad loss to me
If USD loses next week they finish the season with 3 losses in 4 weeks, not exactly the kind of finish the committee looks for. And with the chance of 3 other 4 loss teams being in the conference I find it hard to believe they select any team from MVFC outside of the top 3 teams (NDSU, SDSU, WIU). Otherwise they have to justify why they let a 4 loss USD into the playoffs and not UNI and YSU.

I suspect both UNI and USD will make it in (assuming UNI wins and USD loses). Youngstown already has five losses. UNI would probably have the stronger case to make it in at 7-4, but unless USD looks like garbage against SDSU, I think they still make it in on the bubble.

What if ISU beats NDSU next week, would you then let in 6 teams from the MVFC? I think not, and that is why I believe MVFC gets only 3. I find it hard to let in basically half or more of the MVFC.

I dunno. I think if USD, ISUr, and UNI all win next week, it would be hard to justify keeping 6 MVFC teams OUT of the playoffs -- other than if they apply the argument of "Well, one conference CAN'T have THAT many teams make it."

On paper and on the field, NDSU, SDSU, WIU, UNI, USD, and ISUr all appear to be legit playoff teams. All of them would have records to support being in the field. The only way you keep any of them out -- while doing an intellectually honest assessment -- is if there is another team that is clearly more deserving. If you take strength of schedule into account, I'm not sure there would be many other teams that could make a solid argument over any of those Valley teams. The committee selections are typically not without one or two head scratchers or odd judgments, though.

The MVFC is getting at least 4. NDSU and SDSU are already locks. WIU and UNI are as close to locks as you can get since they play cupcakes next week and either is a lock with a win.

The question is how do the SDSU/USD and NDSU/ISUr games go? If the home teams (USD and ISUr) win the MVFC gets 6 in. If they both lose ISUr is done and USD is in trouble but would still have a shot depending on how bad they lose and what else happens on the bubble. If only one of them wins the MVFC likely gets 5 with the loser being out.

The crazy thing with USD is if they beat SDSU I think they have a decent shot at sneaking into that 7 or 8 seed since they'd be 2nd in the MVFC pecking order at 8 wins with head-to-head wins over the other two 8 win teams (SDSU and WIU) but with a loss they could, and maybe should, be out of the playoffs completely.

UNI will finish second in the conference standings. Pretty tough to leave them out of your “top 3 in the conference” given that UNI beat SDSU by 3 touchdowns and led WIU with 7 seconds left.

UNI will finish 6-2 in conference play. UNI will have the tie break over SDSU for the official second place spot in the standings due to the head to head win.

WIU will finish 4th the conference at 5-3.

I’d ISUr and USD finish at 7-4 USD will have finished in 6th place due to tie breakers. They’ll have lost 4 of their last 5 and their last 3. It’s not hard to imagine they get left out.

Meanwhile of ISUr finished 7-4 that means they beat NDSU and 7-4 UNI ties door the conference title, and based on tie break I think they get the auto bid on a 3 way tie situation between UNI, SDSU and NDSU. Maybe I’m wrong. Even if they do t you aren’t leaving a co-MVFC champion out. That also means Illinois State finished 5-3 in conference play. That locks ISD into 6th place even without tie breakers.

YSU has 5 losses. Not 4. They aren’t in the discussion at all.

If they take USD at 7-4 over a team that is 7-4 but 2 games better than them in the standings, will have finished second in the conference and beat them head to head there will be hell fire reigning down on the committee.

NDSU
SDSU
UNI

Both NDSU/SDSU are in even with a loss next weekend. NO WAY UNI loses at home to ISUb so they are a lock.

Ill State
USD

I think both of these teams need to win to make the playoffs. USD would have lost to every good team above them except WIU and would be on a 3 game losing streak. Remember YSU a few years ago and losing at the end of the year?

WIU

They have SIU at home and that could be a sneaky game for them. Win and they are 8-3 but even with a loss they still could get in.

It will definitely be an interesting last weekend. Hopefully Valley teams will be divided up for the playoffs but I doubt it. UNI, WIU, Ill State....are all too close together along with NDSU-SDSU-USD.....xsmhx
