Do you think Jensen missing the game against NAU hurts his odds at winning the Payton award?

Any word on Kris Gardin getting a camp invite in the spring?

He has a shot. He just needs a good pro day and if he could get in an all-star game and have a good week that should be enough.

Do you think Jensen missing the game against NAU hurts his odds at winning the Payton award?

At this point nobody has run away with an award so any missed game has to hurt.

It's good you have O'Connor on there now, but you're missing his running mate it seems -- Trevor Knight has basically identical to better stats than your #2 on the Payton list. 22 TD, 6 INT, 2445. Probably should at least be on the watch given some of the other QBs on that list, particularly given he's a junior.

2017 FCS PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES
UPDATE – NOVEMBER 5, 2017

MY PAYTON CANDIDATES (20)

REMOVED
RB Detrez Newsome, Western Carolina, Sr.- 133 carries, 933 yards, 7.0avg, 8 TD, 133.3 yds/gm, 7 catches, 99 yards in 7 games.

Just wondering why Newsome would be removed coming off a 197-yard performance against Citadel (the #1 defense in the SoCon)? I know he has only played in 7 games, so that keeps him from showing up on some of the NCAA stat rankings - a player has to have participated in 75% of his team's games to be on some of their stats. But assuming he plays halfway decent in his last two games, he will meet the 75% requirement and will probably end up well inside the top 10 in the country for total rushing yards (currently sits at #10 with only 7 games played), rushing yards per game (would be at #2 currently), and YPC (would be at #5 currently).

You only have 2 RBs on the entire list:
RB Roc Thomas, Jacksonville State, Sr.- 133 carries, 834 yards, 6.3avg, 9 TD, 92.7 yds/gm, 14 catches, 226 yards in 9 games - Newsome has more yards in fewer games, better YPC, and only 1 less TD (but is behind in receptions)
RB Josh Mack, Maine, Soph.- 191 carries, 1152 yards, 6.0avg, 6 TD, 144 yds/gm, 26 catches, 180 yards in 8 games - similar in that with 1 more game Newsome's numbers probably won't look way behind these rushing (behind in receptions but not much in receiving yards)

Not arguing either way, just curious if it was simply the number of games played that causes his numbers to not look as good as they actually are or if you thought there were just more deserving guys.

Totally agree, just pushing for "my guy" to keep his name on lists :)

Newsome is also a dangerous return man (made some All American teams last season due to leading the country in all-purpose yardage). Western hasn't used him much on returns because of the injury and not wanting to risk him, but I think he has a shot of being on an NFL roster because of that. Probably want get drafted, but will probably get invited to several tryouts. So again, just want to see his name out there.

I almost put him on there. I was just trying to put some of the top names on there. I'll do an early look at the 2018 group once all the awards come out and games are completed.

It is simply games played. I know he would not have a shot at winning. In fact if not for the player of the week performance by Thomas this week I would have removed him. Newsome is better than Thomas but you can't miss that many games and have a real shot at the award unless you have a ton of touchdowns.

I have no problems with the list, although it is unfortunate the nation's best defense will not win a BB award. too many stats spread out amongst too many JMU players.

Which player is that? If you are about to say Ankrah I do not think he is the best defender in the nation. This year the best defender is either one of these linebackers or a DB. The best defender I have seen on film is DeLuca but he hasn't played in enough games. I feel bad he and Newsome have missed so much time because they are both among the top 5 most talented for their awards.

I don't think you understood my post. first, I did start it with "i have no problems with the list." all I said was that we won't win a BB award. I didn't say we should. that's why I said the stats are too spread out.

I know what you meant that your numbers are too spread out to win an award but who from JMU or in the CAA do you feel is the best in the country? That's what I was asking. I know you guys have a ton of talent on defense but I actually feel your best defender is not on the list. He just has the best numbers of those on your team.

gotcha, we're on the same page. I think what you misread was the word "defense", you probably thought I said "defender". I could have been clearer and said "a player on the best defense" instead. you're correct, we don't necessarily have the best singular defender. think we're on the same page. good work on the list, no idea how you can keep up with all of that. xthumbsupx

What is the reason that you have had Lehigh QB Brad Mayes as "considered" for the season? He has been in the top 5 in passing yards and TD passes every week this season and we are in week 9-10. Mayes has led the nation multiple times in those two categories and is only a true Junior. Just curious on your thought process. Several of the QB's on your list don't have the numbers Mayes does.

Agree. Not sure why Maier and Mayes of Lehigh were getting overlooked along with Kanoff the Princeton QB and Wilson the Bryant QB.

Although it looks like Maier and Kanoff were added to the Walter Payton Watch List today. Mayes and Wilson of still being overlooked. Process is confusing.

I put him in the considered area as I was going through more info this week. He is a good player but I have Keelan Doss in there and I am trying to only put one from a school in my top 20 or so. Doss is your best player and you guys aren't ranked so I wanted to only put one. I think Horsted of Princeton could be argued to be listed in the top 20 but Kanoff is their best player and I went with him.

I'm not going to put many NEC guys in my lists because of level of competition. A NEC player better have a significant amount more than most others for me to consider them. I translate the NEC to a really high level of D2 football. The 7th best player in the CAA or MVFC deserves to be listed more than the top NEC player most of the time. I had the Saint Francis WR in my top 20 in the preseason because of his gaudy production but he has not had quite as good of a year as you would hope for. I need to see someone so dominant they look like a next level player and I'm not sure you have any seniors like that in the NEC, on offense, right now.
