I don’t think the NCAA should be involved in academic quality. At all. Regardless of what was done at UNC- this entire investigation was way out of the NCAA’s lane.

The sooner these university sponsored professional sports teams start paying salaries to players and stop making them be “students”, the sooner all these charades will stop.

Laker is right to point to AAU membership rather than the NCAA.

UNC essentially argued to the NCAA that, yes, the courses were academically bankrupt, but since they were open to athletes and non athletes alike the NCAA should not be involved. I agree.

This is more an accreditation issue than a problem with athletics. The Southern Association rather than the NCAA should investigate. And the AAU should review UNC’s membership. That won’t happen because the courses in this case were in the African American Studies department. An investigation and any adverse findings would be sure to invite charges of racism. No school wants that.

There’s a broader issue here that raises questions about the whole concept of the “scholar athlete.” This is the most egregious example in recent years, but at virtually every school in the land athletes who are considered academic risks are steered toward fluff courses that offer easy A’s and majors with the lowest standards.

In a second. Now that they’ve set the precedent? Who knows.

I’m starting to wonder what the ncaa can control.

They can’t do anything to athletic departments that systemically cover up significant, heinous, criminal activity.

They can’t do anything to schools who systemically commit, and admit too, academic fraud. They just told every other school - feel free to do the same thing. We can’t touch you. Meanwhile the hypocrisy of it is the ncaa mandates eligibility and clearinghouse requirements. Starting in 2 years the NCAA is going to start distributing money to schools based on apr scores. Fake classes sure will make that easy to get too.

However, give a kid a hot dog, have a kid with a YouTube channel making money, give a kid a plane ticket to get home to a family members funeral, etc... **** you. You’re going down.
