Tough match ups this week.

North Dakota St at Indiana St - I think Stick and company give the Bison a good 1st half lead and the run game, though not as effective as earlier in the year, plays keep away well enough late to salt it away.
Youngstown St at South Dakota - I think YSU contains Streveler and the YSU run game is too much for USD's defense to slow down.
Western Illinois at Northern Iowa - Rejoice Neck fans! Pretty sure I've picked your last 3 games wrong so WIU should figure out a way to win this one since I'm picking UNI.
Southern Illinois at South Dakota State - The SDSU offense comes out guns blazing after their embarrassment last week and blows out SIU early.
Illinois St at Northern Arizona - I still think the Redbirds end up as the 3rd best team in the MVFC so I obviously believe they have the horses to win this one.

Looks like the Coyotes have still not convinced the majority of their validity this year. People talk about the Coyote offense and the Youngstown defense. What people have always over looked all year is how well the Coyote defense has played. They have only given up 5.5 points per game in the first half. When the games have been close the Coyote D has been excellent and has been way better then expected against the run . Where they haven't been so good is protecting the league. The Yotes average half time score this year is 33-5.5 which I believe is a telling stat. The Coyotes have played 3 of 4 on the road and have looked impressive. We have barely seen this team at home this year.

I would go

NDSU - will win by fewer then most expect
USD - in the win bigger than most expect special
Western Illinois - really a toss up
SDSU - blowout
Illinois State - another blowout

you guys have found a game formula that helps your defense .. you come out fast on offense and defense (a little shock and awe), and put people on their heels. Your run defense is surprisingly stout given you tend to rely more on speed. The WIU game was telling as far as how to counter attack USD. I will say this about ISU .. if we come out conservative like we usually do and like WIU did .. I suspect we will be playing from behind all game like WIU. But a lot of what we do each week this year depends heavily on how our young OL (lost 4.5 starters from last year and have 2 injured newbies from this year that can't stay on field) is coming along, and then our opponent's defensive strengths. We're banking on our OL developing into a solid unit over course of season .. if not, we will start to struggle a lot more on offense as schedule toughens the rest of season.

but i'm a believer in USD even though I picked WIU to win a close one at home. But I also want to see how you do when the "shock and awe" game plan doesn't work as well against some stronger faster defenses.

be warned .. Spack did not let team celebrate their usual "victory Sunday" after 2nd half let down and sloppiness against ISUb. Per Spack, the entire team is very disappointed in that game. Guessing they will come out pretty stoked to make up for last week's let down .. Spack made this all pretty clear in his post game interview Monday.

That said, Cookus is warming up and they are at home playing at their elevation. But we're banking on defensive disparity proving to be the game breaker for us.

Don't forget NAU has a lame duck coach, a situation that is strange to completely bizarre depending on your conspiracy theory notions.

Missouri State and Indiana State are arguably the two worst teams in the MVFC this year and they both managed to hang around for a while. Generally agree we don' know how good we are yet .. and our SOS ranks like 75th or so. Only question mark we have is will our OL continue to develop as SOS toughen. We were up 24-0 at half against ISUb and literally left minimum of 20 points on the field that first half, despite not establishing our run game. But the ISUb run defense is pretty legit .. I know NDSU has really strong run game .. but guessing you won't run over them like everyone else you played so far. Their run defense ranks 23 in total yards per game and 19th on yards per carry, and their SOS rans 4th in FCS so far.

We played MoST just as tough as NDSU .. and we were playing on the road. EIU is not strong at all, but is now 3-2 and we destroyed them on road ... stat we are particularly proud of against EIU .. on 15 of their 16 drives, they netted 1 total yard combined.

But can't argue your point ... we're winning by 30 points against average and below average teams, despite losing 4.5 starting OL from last year and 2 more injured this year. Their development will determine if we are a good team or a great team. But we love our defense and can go 2 deep at most positions.

We have 2 decent teams on road coming next ... NAU seems to be warming up offensively, but their defense is presumably weak. Then SIU who has played inconsistently to this point, but certainly are a decent team.

North Dakota State at Indiana State .. InSU has strong run defense, playing at home, with 20 mph winds (S, SW) that will affect passing attack. So I can see NDSU struggling a bit, but eventually pull away by 3 TDs.

Youngstown State at South Dakota .. toughest pick of week; Youngstown will try to do to USD, same as they did to SDSU ... control the clock. USD likes to come out very fast and aggressive. If YSU can contain them in Q1, they should win game. QB Streveler will have a chance to prove himself against an elite defense .. if YSU offense let's him on field.

Western Illinois at Northern Iowa .. 2nd toughest pick because I have no idea if UNI is back on track. So going with WIU .. they took a beating 1st half against USD, and fought back. WIU in close one.

Southern Illinois at South Dakota State .. should be a game for SDSU to break out a bit. SDSU by 2-3 TDs.

Illinois State at Northern Arizona ... Spack and team not happy with last weeks game. Too much defense versus too little defense. ISUr will slow the game down on offense to help their defense in the thin air ... ISU by 2 TDs.
