I need to see one more good showing for Delaware. I'm watching.Yep, I struggled with that one a little bit and I probably got UND too high as well, I didn't realize the extend of their injuries, should have done more research. I actually thought about putting Cal Davis in there someplace but I might wait a week and see.

They have two one point losses against teams that are currently 1-5 with the only win being Jacksonville.

The other polls have them at 9 as well.

You would be making a mistake to assume the margin of victory with Wofford has anything to do with how good they are or how many teams they would beat in the top 25. Whenever they are really good they always win by 1, 2, or 3 pts. over pretty much everybody...good team or bad.

Pay very little attention to that.

So did CAA and MVFC schedule makers take too much PTO prior to this year? I thought those schools always made tough OOC schedules? Schedule makers used to make it look so easy.

Its not just the margin of victory. It's the quality of opponents. I personally can't justify a team with an eek out win over Furman (Yes it was. Furman out gained them by 100 yards and was a missed chip shot FG from winning.) over a team with two FCS blowouts and an FBS win.

South Dakota? If so, I had them 9th previous and 7th now......I also remember that it is USeD....and that 7th ranking puts them 3rd my MVFC picture. Plenty good for now.

Yeah, definitely the worst OOC slate for SDSU in a long time most likely. Depending on what Montana State does. If they keep the passing game going then I would bet on them to win the Sky. If they are what everyone expected then it's a very poor OOC. Next year is better.

SOS does matter somewhat. How good your team is also matters. Your team is highly unlikely to have as good of a record playing the schedule of a CAA or MVFC team. It is possible your team is that good but it is not likely that that they would storm through the other two conferences with the ease they probably go through the SLC.

I agree with DT though, I do think the SLC is on the rise.

If you have SDSU in the top ten, it is kind of tough to not consider them at least. They played a very close game with SDSU and have a FBS loss. I have not voted for them yet (trying not to be a mega-homer), but if they beat UND this week, I will give them a place in my poll.

They've looked solid. The game they played against SDSU coupled with holding the WSU to 31 when their offense couldn't stay on the field was pretty impressive. At least compared to the other teams I look at for the bottom of my poll IMHO. I think they will be at the top of the Sky with what I watched. But hell, if they lose this week then I guess I was wrong and they get dropped from my poll.

Hey Thumper, do you think there will be some empty seats for the Bison game?

I called a couple of other buddies to try and get tickets but to no avail....

Wofford #5? Did you see their earlier squeekers?

I did. I feel like the Terriers are a team that always gets better as the year goes on under Coach Ayers. Their option attack really gets rolling. They started with a conference rival which is never easy. Sometimes you have to survive and advance. I can see the skepticism though. Time will tell...

So far, no one would disagree with you I don't think. This is the only time your SOS is gonna be close to the others I think. In the end it's probably not gonna be.

I agree but "unlikely" is why we have the best playoff in all of college football. My point is that a week three poll is really just wall paper. But it's fun to talk about if people don't lose their minds over it

And i was also considering my team among that top five. We don't have much leeway either if we hope to get even a low seed

And while i'm enjoying finally getting to pick on NDSU and sdsu about SOS, i do understand that that is short lived once we both hit conference slates. And regardless, i think 3-10 is pretty much the same...and none of them is on the level of NDSU and JMU imho. i don't care if those two play Katy Highschool every week. They are on another level right now.

Sagarin somehow has you guys at 11. Panthers would be on my radar with a win in Carbondale next week, depending on what happens to the teams I have ranked 20-25. Similarly, SIU would gain consideration with a win over you guys. UNI wins over SIU and WIU back to back would almost definitely put them in my top 25.

In the same vein, who the hell is putting Holy Cross at 16 and 17? We need to string together a few more before getting consideration to be ranked this high.

As much as NDSU would like. No FBS will play us, even stronger FCS teams will sometimes avoid us ala Georgia Southern and Montana State. I know the rest of the fanbase isn't happy with it either.

Look at articles like this- https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2014/8/30/6086977/north-dakota-state-fcs-fbs-STOP-PLAYING-THEM

And it all comes down to perception. Most FCS teams continue to completely **** the bed vs FBS. You might come back from a loss against Boise State and make a big bowl but you can't come back from a loss to NDSU. It sucks, I would like to see a competitive game. Our OOC has been dismal, and EWU was supposed to be a substitute for a mid major FBS foe, but they are having a down year.

Afraid things aren't going to get better, we will sign home-home with some FCS teams but FBS has completely run away from us. I guess that is what happens when you start taking out teams like K-State and Iowa both of whom were looking at a possible FBS title game the year before they played us.

That game was never in doubt. I watched most of it. Yeah it was a respectable effort but you guys only had one decent drive all game. 5 turnovers and you guys only cashed in once. The only thing that was in doubt was Auburn's ability to actually hold onto the ball.

And the whole time I was hoping for another Auburn fumble so the Bears could get a scoop and score because I knew they weren't going to be able to piece together another TD drive. You guys hadn't shown anything on offense outside of that one drive.

Hoping for scoop and scores isn't an effective offensive strategy.

So, you're saying Coach Malzahn, Coach Lindsay, and Coach Steele were absolutely serene when Mercer had the ball with a chance to take the lead with about 1/2 a quarter to play? If, as you (ludicrously) say, the game was "never in doubt," they would have been totally at peace, right?

No. They should have been whipping you guys worse.

Gus and his offensive staff are a joke. They have been since before we even played them. Their defense could win them a championship if they knew how to 20 points a game on the board.

Sorry, I wish you guys would have won and it was a good effort but I had more way confidence in Auburn's defense than your offense.

Hoping for scoop and scores isn't an effective offensive strategy. Putting your Team in a position to have more points than the other Team at the end of the game can be a very effective Winning Strategy. Mercer had that opportunity against the #15 Team in FBS, which, only 1 week earlier had played the #1 Team in ALL of College Football to a 1 score game.

Meanwhile this season, the 2017 Jacksonville State Team was out of the game and about to get completely WORKED before their band sat down after beating & blowing at halftime in their game against a GT Team that is ranked somewhere below #42...we'll behind such traditional FBS Football powers as Duke & Wake Forest.

Nope. You implied that Mercer wasn't in that game late in the 4th qtr. Which was a stupid thing to do because they were.

They scored with 5 minutes to go. That's an eternity in football. I wouldn't call it "late" in the quarter.

I didn't say it wasn't close at that point. I said that Mercer was never that big of a threat.

The only reason it was close was because Auburn couldn't hold the ball not because Mercer's offense kept them in it.

Why would I expect Mercer's offense to win them the game when they only got into the red zone one time the whole game without Aubie's help?

But go ahead, champion Mercer's loss as the SoCon's grand achievement. It's funny like the Southland rubes stroking it to Nicholls.

How is it boasting? I showed an example of a game that actually went to the wire. I didn't know referencing something was the same as Mercer fans and Citdog trying to act like only being down a touchdown with more than 7 minutes to go after being behind the whole game makes Mercer the biggest, baddest little 1-2 ballclub in the south.

I tried bragging about our loss in 2015. It didn't help us get our ass kicked any less.

Considering your obvious state of inebriation, I probably shouldn't even try to splain this to you, but...

1) As far as I know there were not, nor have there been, any posts (at all) on AGS made by Mercer Fans regarding the loss to Auburn on Sat. prior to your post (#101).

2) Your post (#101) was 2-pronged.
A) It clearly attempted to denigrate Mercer's showing against Auburn by citing statistics, that, though factual, were all not favorable toward Mercer and these were the only statistics you cited. If you had posted that Mercer held Auburn to the type of rushing yards (146) that only Defenses from Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia had held them to in recent games or that ALL 5 of those turnovers were clearly TAKEAWAYS by Mercer Defenders, then you might be able to claim that you were not attempting to espouse an anti-Mercer narrative. But you didn't and you were, as is further evidenced by you ludicrously (best word I got) trying to claim that a 1 score game in the latter stages of the 4th quarter was "never in doubt." I know you are a band-person, but you seem to have at least a cursory working knowledge of how athletics contests work. Mercer has a shot to win that game until 4:50 was left & Auburn scored a TD to make it a 2 score game. Anyone with any knowledge of sports knows that & YOU DO TOO.
B) In a ludicrous (just seems so right) attempt to bolster JSU & the OVC's credibility, you tried to BRAG about REALLY "taking Auburn to the brink...YEP" by posting a 2 year old YouTube of JSU's HIGHLIGHTS in a LOSS against a bad, last-place in the SEC Auburn Team. I really can't imagine a better example of "bragging about a loss"...actually.

3) In response to your post (#101), a few Mercer (and SoCon) Fans disputed your ludicrous (sorry) mischaracterization of the certainty of the outcome of the Mercer @ Auburn game. There was no bragging about the loss. Mercer Fans have suffered through way too many close losses to highly ranked Teams to take any pleasure from them at this point. There's certainly a measure of pride about the way the young men competed in their 1st time on such a large stage, but no joy, pleasure, or satisfaction. Instead, another painful loss that, possibly, could have been a BIG win.

Does this all make sense now? If not, try reading it in the morning after some aspirin & tomato juice.

This !!!!!

for what it is worth ... both Sagarin and Massey predicted NC A&T would beat Charlotte.

Why ? Because Charlotte is a bad FBS team, If they were FCS, Massey would ranked them 40th behind Indiana State .. Sagarin would rankt hem a little lower than Massey and lower than Missouri St.

Good for them that they won ... but this idea that NC A&T deserves a top 25 ranking, much less to be moved up to #15 for beating a team that would be ranked 40th in FCS by 4 points. Yeesh .. strength of schedule is not rocket science. Every MVFC team plays 7 or 8 conference games much tougher than Charlotte, plus 1 or 2 non-conf.

Nicholls State, Holy Cross ... how about getting more than 1 good win in several years before you get catapulted into top 25 ... this is why there are such disparities between polls and ranking systems ... total lack of objective analysis.

Tenn St is 3-0 .. Massey ranks them #51 .. guess why ? Because they barely beat 3 bad teams. Jackson St by 2. Florida A&M by 11. And a Charlotte like Georgia St by 7. They jumped from #24 to #20 for beating a bad team by 11. And 2 weeks ago they beat an even worse team by 2 (Jackson St) ... why are they moving up barely beating bad teams ??? They should be falling out of top 25, not moving up ... weak wins are a bad thing.

FCP Coaches Poll ... you need to look an inch beneath the surface ... STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE ... Stop punishing good teams for scheduling tough games and losing to good teams then simultaneously rewarding average teams for barely beating bad teams. There are many systems easily available to assist in this ranking process .. it is not that hard.

So then the good conferences should just play each other exclusively in their own championship? then when those "good teams" and "good conferences" start getting bad (cycles) then how would anyone know it if they are only playing each other in the playoffs? You can't simply go by computer rankings. FCS is a nationwide system. If one conference keeps winning the title, then tough crap if they can only be allowed 3 teams in. If the other teams don't like the system or their conference then they can switch or move up. But they need to stop singing about the joys of their conference one day, then crying about it the next.

Shame on you M- Kat. You must bow to the almighty football conference in the Great Plains. You must obey their rules as we are only here because they allow us a meager existence. We are grateful as we know that their 6-5 teams are far superior to our top teams. M-Kat is guilty as charged. Insubordination to the Great Plains Conference. LOL! Exactly!! Well said milleniumkat!
I don't disagree with both of your's point there regarding stronger conferences.

I have always argued on Redbird fan page that the most statistically unbiased rankings occur about games 7 pr 8 (my swagged guess based on a balanced 3 or 4 non-conf and 3 or 4 conf games), but otherwise agree that after that point, they can become partly self-perpetuating when relying entirely on statistcal systems ... that is, really good conferences tend to cluster higher and really bad conferences tend to cluster lower .. because of the point you make. But it is still far better than FCS Coaches Poll and STATS/TSN. For what it's worth I tend to agree more with the AGS poll than FCS or STATS.

Bottom line .. NC A&T and Tenn St are prime examples of why subjective polling does not work, especially at FCS level .. the coaches being polled are too lazy, even though they typically know better.. And then the writers and coaches are too regionally biased.

My suggestion would be for anyone publishing a subjective poll, would be to adopt a SOS system and post the objective SOS right along side the subjective ranking. That way when you have 7-4 team who played the 60th ranked SOS versus another 7-4 team who played the 6th ranked SOS .. there would be some objective context to those clearly unequal 7-4 teams.

What does last season have anything to do with this season when it comes to rankings?
What else would you go by just 3 games into current season ? Too few data points to do anything worth a dime.

I really like what Keeper is trying to do, particular to improve ranking systems early in season .. combining a statistical ranking system with lost starters/production. Lot of work tracking the lost starters/production, but this is the way to do it.

What whining ? I argued UNI and YSU should have been ranked lower early in season. I argued ISU was about right for this point in season .. though believe we will continue to climb.. The only MVFC team I argued should be higher ranked was WIU.

This is a message board where I am simply criticizing a clearly flawed ranking system.

So again .. what whining ?

Gang, I'm not sure if anyone in the MVFC ever endorses his opinion.

Mostly because he posts an opinion like this, gets torn up over it, and then posts a response like this one where he claims innocence and that he never said anything. xlolx

That's pretty much what Supe's "How they fared" weekly thread does (SOS starts appearing after week 4) plus even more information regarding computer rankings, wins against ranked opponents, etc.

Have you seen A&T play this season?

Have you also checked out Massey's Composite Ranking this year? Better yet, have you talked to the numerous NFL scouts at A&T's games checking out Brandon Parker, Khris Gardin, Lamar Raynard, Jaquil Capel, and numerous other Aggies?

You speak of SOS, but SOS can also be very subjective. Don't penalize the kids on these teams for just running the plays they are coached to do so, against teams they have no control in scheduling.

Well I misunderstood your post a bit then. When it started off with "This !!!!!" it lead me to believe you thought basically every MVFC should be ranked.

Apologies on that. But, you are whining about something and putting down others for things you say are so basic when you do not in fact put in any work on these things and believe you have all the answers...and Massey is not that. I don't give a rat's ass how much some of the MVFC boys want to lean back on it.

I've been around here long enough and in these conversations so many times I remember when the MVFC fellers were absolutely against the Massey or computer style rankings...or at least a lot of them were because the conference was 4th at best a lot of time. So you see, people rely on different tools when they can just sit back and complain but most of the people voting here put in a good amount of time sorting through various pieces of "evidence" to get what they think is correct. Yes, it is still absolutely flawed cuz if it wasn't we wouldn't be able to have all these arguments every week.

But seriously griping about it being flawed when we all know this and still try to make it as good as possible and have the discussions seems a little whiny to me.

As others have done, you do not have to actually vote if you want to show and tell your top 25 cuz believe me the Massey copiers get eaten alive quickly around here as well.

Massey didn't predict a win for A&T and still gives Charlotte the three point home field advantage even after the game has been played. It currently has the Aggies at #30; which is within earshot of the Top 25 anyway. Gardner-Webb was a well-regarded mid-level team when they played A&T. It's not A&T's fault they're on a down spiral. Gosh y'all got me defending the farmers. xeyebrowx

Both Tennessee State and A&T have spent time in the top 25 in recent years and have some brand-recognition. Their appearance in the poll isn't fly by night.

If it makes you happy, TSU is predicted to lose by double digits this weekend at UT-Martin. But if a team keeps winning, they should be ranked. Expanding on your example, the 7-4 team from a 'less competitive' conference isn't usually going to be ranked. These things have a way of working themselves out. xdontknowx

Some do
my friend. Some do. I honestly think that WILD fluctuations in the first qtr of the season should be acceptable as good teams play good teams and good ones play alleged bad ones. Then by mid point, things should iron out.

I think the Nazi death grip on the top four spots based on last year when other teams are kicking in people's faces is dumb. dumb. dumb. Nice win last week btw.

If a voter was to go strictly on the first 3 weeks results with no thought to prior years' experience, the Yotes should come in the top 5. And FBS win, a top-10 win, and a complete blowout of a pioneer, matches the best record of any team out there.

Polls including AGS should not come out until week four! Votes should be cast only on the first three games of the season not on how a team finished previous season. Injuries, new coaches and teams not playing up to par make a preseason poll and early season polls worthless and make voting a nightmare first few weeks.
Look at the teams that started in top ten that have struggled out of the gates this year, EWU and UND for example. would anyone have EWU,UND or Poly in your top Twenty after three weeks if they had not started season so high? Anyone who does not have USD in top three are crazy IMOxtwocentsx.

Another question If MSU or Montana win this week are they good wins based on UND and EWU preseason rankings or ok wins because both of those teams will have 3 losses?? I think a win over USD today is as impressive as a win over Sammy,James Madison or NDSU.

Last year matters. I would get your point if everyone graduated everyone and had to build a brand new team. That's not the case.

EWU is a perennial playoff team and UND was a playoff team last year. Odds are once the dust settles that will be true again. If not they will fall out of the poll. USD looks impressive so far, but it's also likely they get beat around some in the MVFC.

As you pointed out USD will have some losses and will move in the poll accordingly. What's crazy to me is Sammy gets exposed for being a poser. Next year the other polls put them near the top. They walk thru the Southland. The other polls move them even higher. Sammy fans storm the board like they've won the Natty. Then they get exposed again. Wash, rinse, repeat. That's literally how it's played out for three years running. My bet is it happens again. Could be wrong. If I am I'll eat my crow and place them appropriately in my poll.

One thing I don't do and most AGS posters strive not to do is slot vote. You can win and drop in my personal poll if someone jumped you or I was under impressed with your performance.

Edit: On your question to Kalm. I don't really have a week that all of a sudden last year no longer matters. Every week last year matters less. I also don't drop someone thinking they may work their way back up. My poll is my best guess at how the season will end this week with what we've seen so far.

See Tru's excellent reply above. And yes, this a great discussion.

I rely upon last year somewhat the first few weeks and they're also the most volatile for my poll. Case in point, I moved EWU out of the top 25 after week 2 based on how they played so far this year. I moved them back in at 25 this week because there's a load of talent there if it can be harnessed. Another example is moving USD way up into the top 10 quickly not because of last year but how how they've played so far against good competition.

I had SAM at 6 week one because they return talent on both sides of the ball and have them at 4 now.

We get exposed in the quarter finals or semi finals each year. Ok most get exposed before then. Anyway, then we start the next year with a ton of returning players so it's easy for me to see how they could be tricked in to believing that we could make another deep run. I think it will be interesting to see how it works out this year. If we do get lucky enough to go deep again. Next year we will lose a ton of important senior talent so Im just going to to enjoy the delusion. I'm sure there are plenty of other fans that would love to not be exposed until the late rounds of the playoffs. Your success has made you lose touch with the reality of what most fans experience.

If you can't beat the top 2 teams, and the committee usually has guy unranked and you beat everyone but those...then you are a poser. got it.

Shsu has only had a playoff seed twice in six seasons. Yet win at least one game per year. Some of these douche bags just make **** up to act like they have a sweet take.

They don't actually have facts other than the one game per year their backwoods rabbit ears will pick up.
We are not elite, that is a fact, but poser is just not accurate.

Really we shouldn't do a poll until after we finish the season, but whats the fun in that. Polls are for fans. If you don't like them don't look at them.

Kalm serious question How long do you consider last years results?
Team A was great last year made deep playoff run. Started season ranked 4th. Lose 2 games, where do you rank them? Do you keep them ranked till "after the dust settles" because you think eventually they will be good? Or do you drop them and they can work their way back up?

Hell I'm a Griz fan and I will say for 5yrs they were ranked waaaaay too high based on past seasons. The reason they were voted the most overrated team in the ags era was because they were voted too damn high to start each year lol.

Anyways thanks for the great discussion I like to find out how people vote and what goes into their thought process.

The last couple seasons I have heard how much Sammy has coming back, but we have a poster here (keeper) that puts together a spreadsheet of what everyone in the nation is returning or losing. Sammy has looked pretty average in regards to returners and not comparatively.

I'm lower on Sammy than most. Top 10, absolutely. Top 4, I'm skeptical. I'll defend that position and eat crow if I'm wrong. NDSU was exposed last year. I felt and voted them number 1 going into the JMU game. We clearly were not.

The great thing about all this is we can argue even ruffle a few feathers, but we will all eventually find out.

I agree and I think most of our fans agree 5-10 until we prove otherwise. If you mean stats poll I agree problem is in that poll you lose to Alabama by a point and you lose ground. I think most ags voters do a very good job. This year each week has had its surprises. By returning players I don't just mean quantity I mean quality as well.

Interesting to note that 8 top 25 teams lost today...and five top 25 teams were idle. That's 40% of those playing...losing. More interesting to note is that 6 of them lost to non-top 25 teams. And 4 of those lost to team that were not even receiving any votes. Hmm. Somewhat of a wild day.
