Except it doesn't sound like this was really his decision.

So....we beat them so badly that we got their coach fired?

Wow.

Also, if that's all it takes, then how does Drake or Valpo still even have a team?

Valpo seems to actually be making some strides under Dave Cecchini. They were 4-7 last year, and 3-5 in the PFL. That's not good, but let's remember they routinely were winning 0-2 games a year for a good stretch.

This year, they put up a good fight against Montana, and nearly beat Duquesne who was picked to win the NEC.

Anyways, back to the topic of NAU...

This timing of this is beyond strange. Wonder if the real story comes out?

Except he wasn't fired enough to actually have to leave yet… or something.

Nothing that happened in Flagstaff yesterday makes any sense.

Did NAU have a change in administration lately? To me, it seems they are doing fairly typical for them at this point. They've kept Jerome for 20 years - why this suddenly?

HTF does NAU expect to get recruits for next year with this setup???xconfusedx

As we all know when something is this odd there is usually an embarrassing story behind it.

We know the rest of the story just need Paul Harvey to give us the run down.

Rapes, bribes, hookers or robberies.... usually one or more of the bunch.

He has been there for 20 years. So obviously the President and AD didn't hire him

He is 60, and on the last year of his contract.

Or it could be something as mundane as that. Timing is still strange though.

I was thinking about this the other day. Probably the administration decided it was time for him to go after the first couple of games. Called him into the office on Monday and informed him that this would be his last season as HC at NAU. Told him that they could either do it the "easy way" (season-long retirement party) or the "hard way" (you fired). He's probably not happy about it but chose the somewhat more dignified way out.

Either way, it's a lot better than the way our administration at the time handled the situation with Coach Patterson. Those admins are gone now and the athletics department has "mended fences" with the now-retired Coach P. He even came back for our spring game last year to say hi to a bunch of football alumni.

Why not just keep him on and say you won't be renewing his contract after the final game of the season, or at the earliest, going into the final game? Why now?

Now you have recruits choosing to lay off on their offers to play at NAU until they know who the new HC will be.

I could see an announcement like this if there was already a head-coach-in-waiting and a guarantee of some coaching continuity. So far, that doesn't seem to be the case.
