Art Monk is just insanely underrated. He needs to be in the Hall, one of the best WRs ever!

I was kind of surprised Paul Tagliabue didn't get immediate induction.

No surprise there...
Heard from a member of HOF committee on the radio that he was more than likely not going to get in on the first ballot...

since Irvin made it on the first attempt, then these guys will have no room to bitch and complain when TO comes up for election.
Derek Thomas deserves it more than Irvin.

Here are some stats on Monk:
940 receptions (first NFL receiver to eclipse 900)
12,721 yards
68 touchdowns
183 consecutive games with at least one catch
3 Pro Bowls
His teams went 3-1 in Super Bowls, although he did not play in one due to injury.

Irvin made it on his second attempt...
Bruce Matthews was the only first-time eligible player to make the HOF this go around...
From the Houston Chronicle, "Matthews is the only finalist in his first year of eligibility."

I don't like Irvin either but he deserves to be in the HOF. He didn't make it first ballot but is worthy thus he made it on his second chance. I agree Art Monk deserves to be in the HOF. I don't remember his "prime" years but i remember him enough from the end of Redskin days and i think he played with the Jets a couple years after to say he was very very good. Richard Dent i'm not so sure about. He was a great player but i think to some extent his was the product of his surroundings. Derrick Thomas should and will ultimately make it. Thomas should make for his charitable work alone.

From Pasquarelli on ESPN...
"Two elements seemed to scuttle Tagliabue's chances: First, it was cited several times that Pete Rozelle, arguably the greatest commissioner of any sport at any time, was not elected to the Hall of Fame until his eighth appearance on the ballot. Second, although Tagliabue plans on becoming a globetrotter and will never return to the league from which he retired less than six months ago, there was some sentiment that the final chapter of his celebrated tenure is not yet really completed."

He also says Tags did not even make the 11 finalists. I'm not surprised. Tags will get in eventually...

Now I write this as a die hard Redskins fan. I went to Art Monk Football camp. He was one of my favorite Redskins. But...
He had 5 seasons of 1000 yards receiving.
He only had one season of 100+ receptions.
He never had more than 8 TDs in a season.
He was the Skins #1 WR option, one year.
His stats are cumulative. I don't think he's a hall of ffamer.

I know character isn't a criteria for voting, but Irvin getting in makes me sick. How many drug arrests and character flaws can a man have.
It's pathetic with all his drug COVICTIONS he gets it, but Mark McGwire is suspected of using and he's kept out by the pussy baseball writers.

I will NEVER visit the NFL HOF again.
Art Monk (thanks grizbeer for the stats)
940 receptions
12,721 yards
68 touchdowns
183 consecutive games with at least one catch
3 Pro Bowls
Post-season: 69 catches for 1,062 yards and 7 TD's.
Andre Reed
951 receptions
13,198 yards
87 touchdowns
7 Pro Bowls
Post-season: 85 catches for 1,230 yards and 9 TD's
Michael Irvin
750 receptions
11,904 yards
65 touchdowns
5 Pro Bowls
Post-season: 87 catches for 1,314 yards and 8 TD's
Does Irvin belong in the HOF? Probably, but CERTAINLY NOT BEFORE Monk and Reed. :nonono2:

I understand your point, but Irvin tallied those numbers in 6 less years.
career average per season
Irvin 69receptions / 1082yards / 6tds
Reed 58receptions / 825yards / 5tds
Monk 58receptions / 795yards / 4tds

Longevity PLUS stats = Hall of Fame IMO.
In the HOF...
Charlie Joiner
750 catches
12,146 yards
65 touchdowns
John Stallworth
537 catches
8,723 yards
63 touchdowns
Lynn Swann
336 receptions
5,462 yards
51 touchdowns
Again, this is not to show that Ivrin (or those mentioned above) doesn't belong, but he should NOT have gotten in before Reed and Monk. NO WAY.

No, it was 4 less years. And just to throw it in there, in Art's last season he only played 3 games and in Irvin's last season he only played in 4 games.
Let's not forget about the much heard "Art would have caught that" among Redskins fans over the past decade or so. There is no other receiver, except Jerry Rice, who had better hands than Monk. If he could get even one finger on the ball, he could catch it. Many of today's receiver's can't even do that with 2 hands.

FWIW, keep in mind that hated the Skins and Monk and I'm still PO'd that he's not in.

And I HATE Michael Irvin, although I think he deserves a HOD nod (Aikman was throwing the ball to him to catch, and he certainly did his job pretty damn well, so...). But just not before Art....: smh :
