7 of 10 MVFC teams in the AGS top 25 (or top 21 to be more accurate)! That will thin out once the MVFC conference meat grinder starts.
NDSU's last 6 games (@YSU, WIU, UNI, @SDSU, USD, and @ISUr) are all against teams currently ranked in the AGS Top 25. Now that's a 6 week gauntlet!

Honestly surprised we secured 79 of 84 first place votes. I figured people would quickly forget JMU's win over a seemingly crap ECU team and focus on NDSU's blow out of EWU (a then top 10 team). Throw in the fact that ETSU's defense sold out to stop our running game and held us to only 122 yards rushing and well.... yeah.

Nice poll. AGS folks do their homework. Is there a banner for not getting a pm all year? So far I am perfect with no double entry's, two weeks running.

JMU still has the big tie breaker over NDSU and that's last year's win. Honestly NDSU's thrashing of EWU isn't any more impressive than JMU's thrashing of ECU and the other blowout wins against overmatched teams are equally pointless.
As time goes on though last years results mean less and less. I'm trying to be as objective as possible but with the October and November MVFC schedule gauntlet that NDSU has to run that I mentioned in my previous post I could see NDSU eventually leaping JMU even if both teams keep winning (of course it depends on how impressive those wins are as well). The same goes for SDSU if they can maneuver the MVFC gauntlet unscathed.

I went back and forth. And I did vote for NDSU but only because NDSU played well, winning at EWU is hard. Probably could've flipped it just as easy. It's really hard to judge NDSU this year. 2 OOC games are easy. JMU played ETSU and ECU looked bad. I don't know what to think.

At this point in the season, it's really more about figuring who belongs and roughly where. A spot or two at the top, and 5 or 6 spots down lower on the poll are not that important yet IMO.

My Bears around 14/15 is about right. I mean they started the year out at that number, were expected to lose to Kansas State and beat Murray State...so no surprises there. I think they ended last year around the top ten.. This is why I like the AGS poll. Good job voters! xthumbsupx

This is a good poll as well. Sound reasoning other than using last years results as a tie breaker.
Still really too soon to bicker. JMU win over ECU took a hit this week, NDSU win over EWU looks good at the moment, but still need another week or too to figure that out. So although i lean NDSU #1, i can't argue against leaving the champs at the top until they lose.
SDSU has looked more complete then my Kitties but we have a better win of the two. So since we still look to be in "figure stuff out" mode, i'm good with them at #3.
Can we start the playoffs today please? The best team almost always wins regardless of home vs away imho.

Good work there mk. I think the granularity between 1 & 2 and how close that decision is for some people is why you would go back to the game last year. At this point they look so similar in level you sort of have to flip that mental coin.
SHSU does have a better win at this point but looks to just a bit under what is needed to push them over SDSU since most are pretty sure they are going to be real legit down the road. Those two teams are a real toss up to me and that speaks well for both of them. Very talented FCS teams.

If you watched that game, Maine had two or three opportunities to win it but found a way to lose it. The 1 point difference was a missed PAT late by Maine.

I'm giving the benefit of the doubt for now. It was a road game and I'm still not convinced there's a team that can stop your offense.
Plus like I said, the few teams I have below SDSU weren't not worthy of jumping anybody.

Maybe they are a good DII team this year but they were a .500 DII team last year. Not impressive for VMI.

I only look at who is showing up on last week's top 40 "on the radar" teams and then I pick who had the most catastrophic loss among that group. I kind of figure why bother looking further down the list than the top 40? If you're that bad, is it really THAT significant of a loss to anyone? No.

This is how I felt too. "Why should I punish SDSU because they still won and because they played in one of the better attended environments in fcs football?" Additionally, the four or so teams immediately behind them didn't really do anything notable to justify passing them, so there you go. They stayed put because they won, even if it was ugly.

I'm surprised you think Samford is top 15 considering they've looked like cheeks so far. Talk about ugly wins.
They are probably my one holding on to too much preseason thought right now. The flip side is, of the teams I'd move them behind who do I think would win? They fell for me from last week. Barring a real impressive showing this week I could see myself dropping them again.
It's the same thing I have with UNI. They didn't look great against CP, but I'm willing to pass that secondary issue as a scheme thing Poly used. My question with UNI has always been the offense. Well, we are averaging 300 yards passing and 3 TDs passing per game. That question seems answered. My guy/fandom tells me not to rank them. Don't trust them. My head goes - "neutral field, UNI vs insert team around the....who wins?"
I dropped Howard from 8 last week to out. They had one of the best first weeks. I rewarded it. I saw a quick regression to the mean from them, so I dropped them. Moves like that happen when not slot voting the first 2 or 3 weeks. Teams quickly rise and fall.
USD was about 50 for me last week. 10 this week. Did I overreact? Maybe. However, they've been impressive through 2 weeks.

I had them at 10.
Through 2 weeks their resume is a top 10 resume in the FCS.
This is what I was struggling with. I put them at 16 myself, but I think they can make it into my top 10 by next poll. I have been having a very hard time with stuff each week this year. I try to evaluate things each week and relist everything every time. And I dont' know I just didn't put them in my top 10. They definitely deserve it and will likely end up there next week most likely.

By Nicholls grasping defeat from the jaws of victory they could have made a big bump but instead showed up in the latter parts of polls. My alternate was ewu which disappeared for me in two abysmal losses.

You refer to a MVFC "gauntlet"...and why would that be anymore impressive or difficult than playing a schedule that consists of Villanova, New Hampshire and Richmond?
Sorry, not buying your logic.

Because in between those games JMU has William & Mary and Rhode Island. NDSU has 6 ranked teams on their conference slate and JMU has 3 (as of right now). That could change but it's pretty easy to see who's got the tougher conference schedule right now.

September 11th, 2017, 08:38 PM
7 of 10 MVFC teams in the AGS top 25 (or top 21 to be more accurate)! That will thin out once the MVFC conference meat grinder starts.
NDSU's last 6 games (@YSU, WIU, UNI, @SDSU, USD, and @ISUr) are all against teams currently ranked in the AGS Top 25. Now that's a 6 week gauntlet!
wait till SIU starts creeping up ... but then inevitably, the MVFC conference grind takes is toll and we go 40-40 in conference play. This season is starting to feel like 2014 for MVFC .... and my Redbirds.

The fact that The Valley took the supremacy title from the CAA hurts these East Coast Biasers so much they have to ride the coattails of others for them to claim they have success. If JMU sustains this, then it is JMU, not the CAA. First 3 years, it was the Bison and UNI and not the MVFC, but SDSU, ISUr, and YSU stepped up and now it is the MVFC as a whole that is good. Hell, even USeD is trying to climb the ladder and say "look at us too".
The broken record argument. Our top teams play your top teams & no one goes OMG they killed us. Your OOC success may be something great to the Big Sky folks, but the sample size is very small vs. the CAA & not as dominant as you would think.
I witnessed 1st hand in a cornfield somewhere north of Sioux Falls what was described as the greatest offense since the Kurt Warner Rams. I read how mediocre of a team Villanova was last season on the Jackrabbit threads. 10-7 win for them. They moved on, but please don't tell me how great all these teams are. I watched that team get 7 yards rushing & 200 total yards. They won, but wouldn't you think that the great MVFC would steamroll a basketball school playing in the FCS? You guys are jokers.
Top CAA teams have nothing to fear nor do we hid behind JMU. They kicked NDSU to the curb. We played them tougher than NDSU did last season.
JMU is #1 this season until they lose. The guys from the MVFC can't handle that so be it.

You Valley people act like y'all play in then ONLY conference that has ANY good teams in it. You DON'T.
It is not just about how good the teams are. it is also about the style of play. MVFC plays a smash mouth take no prisoners style of football. The physical toll is brutal on players. Can a wide open air attack beat them, certainly depending on the match up. But I do not consider an air attack brutal. effective, skilled certainly but that is not brutal.

If both NDSU and JMU ran the table going into the postseason, NDSU is my #1 seed.
JMU would get it simply by being the defending champion. A champ deserves the top seed in that scenario.
RootinFerDukes
September 12th, 2017, 07:07 AM
I would tend to agree but it would depend on how well each team handles the elite teams on their schedules.
And I doubt NDSU does run the table... there always has to be a slip up in conference it seems.
With the lack of an fbs too, I would think the SOS isn't AS strong as in past years for ndsu.
RootinFerDukes
September 12th, 2017, 07:12 AM
I'd have a chortle, but the 2nd seed is worth the same to me. Homefield is homefield.
Last year shouldn't mean **** remember? The unintelligent will argue "der der, FBS win tiebreaker, der der", but I can differentiate garbage FBS wins against G5 schools for what they are. The difference is the conference schedule. Top to bottom....it is tougher in the Valley. Yes....UNH, Nova, and Richmond are tough, but it isn't comparable to SDSU, YSU, UNI, and Co....even ****ing USeD is on the rise...ISUr...WIU....
Well then if your conference is so tough, the prospect of running the table is virtually non-existent, so what exactly are you arguing?
RootinFerDukes
September 12th, 2017, 07:16 AM
I'm not the one dragging a defending national champ moniker into a poll argument. You are. If both teams run the table, I'll worry about it then. It would be an interesting argument depending on how the teams get there...

2012 - reigning 1 time champ: 1 seed
2013 - reigning 2 time champ: 1 seed
2014 - reigning 3 time champ: 2 seed - off of a 15-0 season
2015 - reigning 4 time champ: 3 seed
2016 - reigning 5 time champ: 1 seed

Uses real scenarios that show that a reigning champion that had a good follow up season did in fact get home field throughout a playoff in four of five years. Unwittingly proves others points.

Oh yeah.... because ndsu hasn't benefited whatsoever from being a one, then two, then three, then four and then five time champion at any point in the previous five years. Not once. Woe is them!
Show me where they have. In 2012 they were the #1 seed because they were the only one loss team in a power conference outside of ODU (who played a cupcake schedule despite it being in the CAA). In 2013 (#1 seed) they were undefeated with one of the better FBS wins in recent memory and had been obliterating teams down the stretch. The only team that came close to them was the OVC's 10-1 EIU who had an FBS loss to a worse team than who NDSU beat. 2016 should be fresh in everyone's mind and I still contend NDSU had the strongest argument for #1 given their win over Iowa and 5 other regular season wins over FCS playoff teams (including a head-to-head win over the #2 seed).
In 2014 and 2015 I'd argue NDSU lost the coin flip in seedings. In 2014 both NDSU and UNH were 10-1. UNH's loss was FBS whereas NDSU's loss was FCS but NDSU had a dominating FBS win. Both teams had wins over multilple playoff teams but UNH got the #1 seed and NDSU got the #2 seed. In 2015 both NDSU and Illinois St were 9-2 and battling for the #2 seed. They are both obviously MVFC teams but they didn't play each other and were co-champs at 7-1 (though NDSU got the autobid). Both NDSU's losses were to FCS teams whereas only one of Illinois St's losses were to an FCS but NDSU beat the next best team in the conference (SDSU) and Illinois St lost to them. Illinois St got the #2 seed and NDSU got the #3 seed. In both years it seemed to come down to which team had better losses rather than which team had better wins which is still a beef I have with those selection committees.
Don't get hung up on the "we're #1 until we lose" stuff. That's all well and good for the polls but playoff seedings have already set the precedent that the defending champs do not get the benefit of the doubt. What they look is (supposed to be) purely based on the current season's results. So all I'm saying is if things are equal (i.e. both JMU and NDSU finish 11-0 or both finish 10-1) you can't expect the defending champs moniker to get you anywhere when it comes to playoff seeds.
Not with some MVFC posters. They need to create & market a scenario that puts their beloved NDSU #1. All others including an undefeated defending National Champion needs to stand aside. Pleaaassee!

Trust me, I've seen it because I've followed the defending champs much more closely than you have over the last 6 years during the seeding process. See above. I've said all along that JMU could have the best argument for the #1 seed if they finish with the same record as NDSU this year but you can't just decide it based on last year's results without taking into account what each team did this year.

You all never finished worse than a 3 seed in five seasons. You haven't had to play a road playoff game since 2010. You can drop 2 FCS games and get no worse than 3 seed.
Do you really believe any other non-NDSU MVFC team can drop 1 or 2 FCS games and still be guaranteed a 3 seed or better, especially if they didn't win the title the previous year? Regardless of what else happens nationally? Even more so if one of their wins wasn't NDSU?

Go back and look at what the options were in 2015. The #4 seed was 10-0 (with a D2 win) McNeese St. SHSU's 2016 schedule looked tough in comparison to McNeese's 2015 schedule and McNeese had several close calls during that schedule. The #5 seed was your JMU Dukes who also had 2 FCS losses and not a single win over a playoff team (but did have an FBS win - prior to your QB's injury).
I said it several times towards the end of the last year but 2015 NDSU would've been seeded #6 last year (behind EWU, JSU, JMU, SHSU, and The Citadel). Some years those high seeds are easier to crack than others. In 2015 it was uncommonly easy. In 2016 it was uncommonly tough.

Defending champ & undefeated is what you have to answer to. Any season NDSU defending champ & undefeated wasn't #1? That's what I said about JMU. They are undefeated this season they are #1 until they lose.
Read it slow. Not defending champ with 1 loss. Defending champ & no losses. You have found a concept that u can put NDSU #1 in that scenario reeks of homer.

I have JMU as my #1 team in my poll as I have all year and I don't forsee that changing anytime soon if they keep winning because last season still carries a lot of weight for me this early. However, as the year goes on last year carries less and less weight until it means essentially nothing. Say NDSU gets through SDSU on 11/4 and they're still undefeated at 9-0 I'm going to need JMU to show me more than just their 2016 championship trophy for me not to jump NDSU over them. If they easily handle Nova, UNH, and Richmond I have a hard time seeing how NDSU can jump them in my poll at least. But once you get to Selection Sunday being defending champ means zilch whether you're undefeated or on the bubble. Sorry to break it to you.
EDIT: I highly doubt NDSU goes undefeated so if JMU does I'd say there's a 99% chance they're the #1 seed. But that will be because of their stellar resume this year, not because they're defending champs.

You blew it with your pedestrian effort on Saturday.
No kidding.
The only way St. Francis scores on us is if Horn throws them pick sixes.
So we just need Roc to get 4 rushing TDs so we can win by 7. Easy.

Spiders getting too much love at moment. Must show UR can run and get consistent pass rush. They have talent but do not look that formidable under new coaching staff yet. So far, Lauletta and the receiving corps are positives and Clyde on defense. Expect steady improvement and Howard game will be revealing.

He reminds me so much of Shakir Bell from Indiana State a few years ago with how he runs. He'd break a few.....but I have a feeling MVFC defenses would break him, just like they broke Bell.

I think it would be more of an issue with the offensive line then it would be with Roc. Roc had a healthy 5YPC against GT on 18 carries. Got to win in the trenches before Roc can really break it loose. Fortunately Roc is arguably the best receiving back in FCS so running him isn't the only way to get him involved.
One of the reasons he left Auburn was because Malzahn wanted him to play slot.

Well, we'll agree to disagree then. I think even if they keep winning JMU could eventually be supplanted at #1 in my poll ballot by NDSU or SDSU most likely if the chips fall right but I'm just one voter of around 80. To each their own.
In the end I don't really care who #1 is in the polls or the order of the #1 and #2 seeds. The top two are pretty equal in this playoff structure.

I'm sure you never saw Bell play - Bell was built, and ran, exactly like Thomas. Make 7 jukes before getting to the LOS. Try some spin moves. When it worked, it worked. Unfortunately for Bell when it didn't he was lit the **** up in MVFC play.
I remember he had 124 yards in the first half against UNI. Then on the final play (I think) of the first half he tried a cut back and was literally ded on the turf for about 10 minutes. That happened a lot with him. I bet he missed 30-40% of every game he played in simply because he'd try a cut/spin and he'd just get lit the **** up by guys like LJ Fort, Nic DeLuca, Connor Underwood, etc...

Well. If this was last year I'd agree with you because Roc spent more of his time dancing than running North South. Fortunately it seems this year the coaches have finally gotten to him. He seems to finally be learning the difference between being shifty and being a ballerina. He hasn't been afraid of contact this year like last either. We would have to see. I was worried about NDSU this year because I figured Deluca would eat his lunch.

One way that #1 is better than #2 is that ESPN has historically proven they are more willing to air higher seeded teams on the "bigger" networks they have available. It helps from an exposure standpoint.
With that being said, if they feel that one team or matchup has significantly better viewership potential, they'll still throw the bigger fan base on the bigger network of the remaining teams, regardless of seeding.

You're signature is literally him doing a spin move - granted against a defense that clearly doesn't know how to flow to the ball.
I watch that UTC game. 70% of his runs had a spin or juke before the LOS.
When it works it works - but eventually someone is going to crunch him. Then again, he plays in the OVC so probably not.

Aside from a secret and until now private infatuation with blonde women wearing green, here's why i tend to lean NDSU #1 at this point:
....0.....
^^That is the number of combined D1 wins by JMU first two opponents thus far.
....0....
That is the number of total Victories by NDSU's first two opponents thus far in 2017.
However, NDSU has played and dominated a perineal FCS playoff team who's only other loss was to a top 40 FBS team.
While neither team has faced a team thus far that has had a taste of a hard fought victory or even much of a pulse to be honest, I still give the Bison win at EWU the nod until proven otherwise.
But the 2 good things for JMU is the Bison are taking a break this week and they will get to strut their stuff vs 0-2 Norfolk state.
With ECU on a two week bye, The Dukes will have to wait until next week before they face a team with a D1 win under their skirts.

The computers think ECU and EWU are similar. I am not sure ECU can beat EWU. It was a marginal decision for me. Both top teams have awful SOS. At least in NDSU's case I know they are having to buy games because no one will play them. JMU played a FBS but they turned out to be bad.

ECU may be an FBS team, but they aren't that big a deal. Maybe if they show they have a pulse.
I currently have JMU 1 and NDSU 2 and would change it without hesitation if JMU has a lackluster performance and NDSU shows out. The margin between the two is paper thin IMO and I'm giving JMU the benefit of the doubt right now.

Define "consistent". And add in how many seasons back do you have to go before that term applies.
It's not a criticism or a slam, it's a fact. ECU has a great chance to start the season 0-5 or even 0-6.

NDSU beat their similar opponents better. I voted NDSU as #1 but like we've talked about it's razor thin. And I had JMU #1 till I swapped it last second. I think people are completely underestimating hour good EWU is. They lost to Texas Tech and NDSU. Their SOS is upper P5 worthy.

Is your weekly vote in the poll simply a listing of Sag/Massey rankings, or do you think some human judgement is acceptable? Because the rankings you posted confirm what everyone is saying - it is extremely close between these two teams. Which means it is to be expected that different people will give the nod to different teams. Personally, I have JMU #1, but I think it's entirely reasonable to have NDSU as #1.

also bear in mind that the AAC is not the SEC, Big 10 or Big 12. Not even the Pac 12. ECU has 8 wins in 2.2 seasons in prolly the 6 or 7th best FBS conference. I believe EWU is a better team than ECU today...i know they were last season.

I concede that the combined two jmu opponents are better than the combined ndsu opponents. but i think ndsu has the better win. hence "leaning" that direction.

Not arguing for or against your point, but you really can't use the numerical ranking of the teams. As a rough measure I guess you could, but a much more accurate method would be to use the actual rating #.
For example ECU is ranked 122 in massey, but their overall rating is 1.24, ETSU is ranked 223 but their rating is 0.48. Average is 0.86
MVSU rating is -0.16 and EWU rating is 1.38. Average is 0.61.
The reason you want to use the rating is there could a whole bunch of teams clumped together in ratings but be much further apart in ranking. Just more accurate this way. Sorry, I have a thing for accuracy.
