MSU downs the Peacocks 47-7 in the snow. Cold and wet- it took me about until halftime of the basketball game across the street after the game to warm up.

Should get the bye for next week. Duluth should be #3 and play at home.

Who is going to be #2 in the region?

Who is going to be #2 in the region?

I didn't hear of any upsets today, so here are last weeks rankings. I'll assume Tarleton- I'll have to look for their score.

Super Region Four (11/5)
1. Minnesota State-Mankato (10-0, 10-0)
2. Tarleton State (9-0, 8-0)
3. Minnesota-Duluth (10-0, 10-0)
4. Colorado School of Mines (9-1, 9-1)
5. Colorado State-Pueblo (9-1, 9-1)
6. Texas A&M-Commerce (8-2, 6-2)
7. Midwestern State (7-2, 6-2)
8. Central Washington (8-1, 7-1)
9. Azusa Pacific (7-2, 7-2)
10. Chadron State (7-2, 7-2)

With none of the top 7 in SR4 losing today, along with Azusa beating Central Washington, it would seem that the top 7 spots would be unchanged. If that's the case..6 Tex Commerce at 3 Duluth7 MW State at 2 Tarleton5 CSU Pueblo at 4 Colorado Mines (winner at 1 Mankato in R2)

Seems like every year there are unbeaten D2 teams that get beat by teams with multiple losses. Some regions are weaker than others.

Mankato has a good shot this year.

I love it that they have the bye. Should be an interesting opponent- either Mines or Pueblo. Pueblo shut us out in the title game in 2014 and should have beaten us in the first round last year. Azusa got in instead of Midwestern of Texas- not a total shocker as the committee likes to pick someone from each conference. Three unbeaten teams.......

UMD lost their QB early in the game- I think first series. Their defense had a couple of pick sixes. Commerce was the national champs last year and beat us on special teams after we had the lead. Darn tough team. We have our hands full Saturday against Pueblo. We barely beat them last year and they have ten of eleven starters back on defense. Found out yesterday that one of our two thousand yard rushers from last year just had knee surgery and is out. We will just have to suck it up and prevail.

Depending on the weather- maybe 2000. Remember the students, who have showed up really well, won't be there because of Thanksgiving. And Pueblo won't bring a lot of fans. It is unfortunate, it should be a good game.

Zylstra is a true joy to watch. Each stride is like a runaway giraffe as he made a great catch and scored the first TD. Gunn had 121 yards rushing. Pueblo's defense is pretty salty but once you get ahead 24-0 it is tough for them to score quickly.

Hosting Tarleton from Texas next week- top two seeds.

Mavs trail 10-0 in the 4th, put on a 12 minute drive that took 27 plays to score on 4th down TD pass to Zylstra. Then Nate Gunn scores on a 20 yard run with two minutes to go to win 13-10. He rushed for 262 yards on 50 carries in the Snow Bowl. The Mavs o and d lines were fantastic.

Personally, I would have seeded the D2 semifinals 1) MSU-Mankato, 2) Ferris State, 3) Valdosta State, 4) Notre Dame (OH). IMO, the top 3 teams are probably all distinctly better than Notre Dame.

He fumbled inside the 10. There was an interception inside the ten. We missed a field goal. He had a bunch of yards on drives where we ended up punting to keep them pinned back.

Tarleton had the ball for 45 seconds in the third quarter.

They knew we were going to run. The o-line did the best job of the season and kept bulldozing them back about 3 yards a play. Sometimes we had to make it on 4th down. Zylstra's 4th down TD catch as he was falling was classic Zylstra. If we hadn't scored on that drive I think we would have been broken psychologically.

Could you even see the football in the air? How was the wind? I can't imagine trying to throw more than about 30 yards as you wouldn't be able to see the defenders.

Ferris State got jobbed into being the #2 seed in their region, as well, especially after having handed Grand Valley their only loss. To go undefeated along with having a road win @ Grand Valley State and not get a 1 seed was a major mystery. It was a near guarantee, in my mind, that they'd beat Ouachita in the regional final.

In the end, they all have to beat each other. I just think Ferris has had some unfortunate bounces having to go on the road two straight times now despite being undefeated and having beaten some very storied teams.

Yep. Gunn has 149 yards and a TD and we didn't give him the ball enough. Too many long passes that had a low %. 18 for 48. We could run on them and chose not to. We needed to keep their offense off the field. Get a couple of first downs on the ground, then throw deep, throw deep, throw deep. Not a wise thing to do on a windy day!

They beat us in all three phases of the game. Four if you count coaching. We missed 2 PATs and a 60 yard field goal that had no business even being tried. Darn near turned into a kick 6- I thought I was watching Alabama-Auburn.

I keep hearing that Augustana is going D1. That would mean Pioneer football. And they want MSU to go with them in the worst way. At least the guy with the big money does. That would mean Pioneer football too. If we could actually compete in the Summit that would be one thing. I'm afraid it would be just like the old NCC days. The Dakota schools would dominate and AU and MSU would be battling each other in the second division.

IMO they would be higher than the middle of the pack. They do have a very well rounded athletic program with both men and women. And they have a ton of money. Great recruiting spot. For years they have actually considered going D1. I don't think they would make the move on their own- they would have to get kicked out.

Today is the MIAC meeting about St Thomas possibly getting kicked out of D3 MIAC. If you are on Twitter, follow Patrick Reusse. He is more than a little fired up about this.

There are 13 schools that have a vote. A motion needs 9 votes to pass.

Here are the schools- and their original religious affiliation. They are all private.

Augsburg- Lutheran- for expulsion
Bethel- Baptist- I've heard against
Carleton- Congregational- now non-religious- for
Concordia- Norwegian Lutheran- unknown
Gustavus Adolphus- Swedish Lutheran- I've heard against
Hamline- Methodist- for
Macalester- Presbyterian- now non-religious- for
St. Ben's- Catholic- against. This is the sister school to St. John's
St. Catherine's- Catholic- used to be the sister school to St. Thomas. Reusse says yes, which surprises me.
St. John's- Catholic- the Tommies biggest rival. They would be the next to get voted out- against
St. Mary's- Catholic- no football. Reusse say's for.
St. Olaf- Norwegian Lutheran. Home to the Om Ya Ya song- supposedly ringleader of this- for
St. Thomas- Catholic- obviously against.

Honestly though, what do they think they can do? The MIAC is stupidly stable and has 9 football playing members. Why would they punt St. Thomas and go down to 8?

The weak sisters know that Macalester is more than willing to come back for football (they are still MIAC in the other sports) if UST is booted.

I remember talking to a gal who played basketball at Macalester. She said the hardest thing for her was that her teammates really didn't care about winning- or putting in the time to do so. When she was in high school they had a winning tradition- I had seen them play in both basketball and softball. At college they never knew if they would even have a full team to scrimmage against- gals just wouldn't bother to show up if they didn't want to- they would use the excuse that they were studying. It is one thing to lose- and another thing to not even care.

Also of note, if the MIAC is open to looking at schools, I know of one that has low enrollment, private/religious and kinda sucks taint at football right about now. xlolx

The NCAA is proposing to modify the D2 playoff bracket prior to the 2019 season. Currently, the D2 field is composed of four regions with seven teams in each region, and all teams are seeded within their region. The proposal would keep the four regions and seed the top four teams in each region, but would allow the bottom three teams in a region to be shifted to a different region, subject to minimizing travel.

https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/committees/d2/champs/Apr2019D2CC_Report.pdf

The proposal would make the D2 playoff bracket more similar to the DI-AA/FCS playoff bracket. Some D2 football fans on the D2Football.com site (which I always think of as a sister site to this site due to its similar board layout) would prefer if the bracket was even less regionalized; what some posters have suggested would make the bracket quite similar to the current DI-AA/FCS bracket.

Why the hell would anyone spend private college money to get a nursing degree when you can get it at a community college?

You can get a LPN and a two year degree at a CC. But most hospitals are now requiring a BSN-RN. Some will be hired on with a 2 year degree with the stipulation that they will acquire their BSN with in a certain time period. Some hospitals will also pay for it.

In CA and TX I know 2 year schools were pumping out RN's. They have to pass the same licensing test as BSN-RN's, but way cheaper, especially compared to private liberal arts schools. Ex #1 had a community college RN...Made the same $ as a BSN RN. She probably would have needed an upgrade to BSN RN for management positions, but nowadays state universities essentially have a 1 year night school RN to BSN program. For the 2 year RN, its really 2 years in name only. They usually have at least a year of prerequisites before they can get accepted in a 2-year program, making it really a 3-year degree, which is why they generally only need a year to get the BSN. LPN is a different deal and I dont think they generally have prerequisites prior to acceptance in a LPN program..

Concordia-St. Paul 41, Sioux Falls 17
Bemidji State 33, Northern State 7
St. Cloud State 35, Mary 12
Minnesota-Duluth 52, Minot State 7
Minnesota State-Moorhead 44, Minnesota-Crookston 20

Huge upset- USF was missing their All-American running back. Blocked punt- CU got off to a 27-7 halftime lead- USF scored right way in the 2nd half, then stalled to kick a field goal at 27-17. But CU put them away.

Bemidji dominated and may challenge UMD in the North.

No surprise with SCSU over Mary.

UMD pounded Minot, but a Beaver kick return got on ESPN's Top 10. I think it was second behind Eddie Rosario's throw to the plate after the BoSox hit one off the Green Monster to cut down the runner at the plate and end the game 2-1.

Moorhead beat Crookston as expected. UMC will be lucky to win a game this year- but I could say the same for Mary and Minot- and they all play each other so at least two of the three will get a win.

Laker: Did you make it over to Marshall for the end of the game?

Met Thumper in the library lot. Got to hear The Pride play and enjoy some grilled cheese dogs. Met several FGS posters and finally got to thank Rabid Rabbit in person for sending me his ticket for Hobo Days a couple of years ago. Sat in the rain next to the few Long Island Shark fans. They were quite amused by our antics. Jacks put it away by halftime so I scooted over to Marshall in the monsoonal rain. Got back for about the last half of the 4th. Gunn had 3 TDs and about 250 yards rushing. Zylstra caught a TD pass and they made a couple of field goals. Both Mav and Mustang fans (and players) were surprised at how well they played- they had a great 3rd quarter after their starting QB got hurt.

Long Island was college team # 465 and FCS team #57 that I have seen play in person. Will need to get an LIU cap when they come out with them.

Yes- I have a doctor appointment in New Ulm, then I have to help show people where there parking spots will be for this year. We have a new tailgating area- yes, with booze- with spots that sold for $150. There will be some confusion for the pre-game.

Augie came the closest to beating us last year at their place. I don't want to lose to the soon to be D1 school. Should be a good one.

Bemidji State has UM-Crookston today....xlolx

Should be a complete beat down. UMC is something like 2-56 and have not won a game since Nov of 2015....xeekx They should be in the NAIA along with Mayville State, Valley City State and Dickinson State. D2 is not for them.

Then the next week BSU has Minn Duluth at home. This game will be huge. Duluth is ranked and a win over them would really help in potentially winning the NSIC North. NDSU has a bye so I'll probably go to this one.

Bemidji can't afford another loss or they can kiss their playoff hopes goodbye. Augie just beat USF- I was at the game and neither team looked good. Augie's starting QB wasn't getting it done- he put in the backup in the 4th and it really sparked them.

I've been watching the Mavs play since 1971 and I've never seen them put a half together like this one. And this was against a good team!

Shane Zylstra caught eight passes for 220 yards and three TDs. Nate Gunn finished with 146 rushing yards and one score.

The finish of the year in the NSIC this year- Bemidji goes 95 yards in the last minute, then goes for two for the win. Watch the receiver on the PAT fall down, get up and catch the winner. Ten straight years of homecoming wins at BSU- which means that the team jumps into the lake beyond the east end zone. I got to see it once- quite a tradition!

Mavs took a knee the last two minutes with their backups- I was relieved because I didn't want to be like St Thomas and get voted out of the conference.

I'm flying into MSP early on the 14th and will be heading to Fargo/Grand Forks Thrus/Fri/Sat/Sun A.M. before coming back to the Twin Cities for a meeting on Monday. I'm a big fan of the Red River Valley. I nearly moved to Grand Forks in 2011. I just might get a second chance....

I'm considering going to the Minnesota-UND game at the Barn Sunday evening. Also tossing around going to the Vikings-Broncos game if I can find a "cheap" ticket. I'd love to see a game at Williams Arena. That place has also been on my bucket list.

They easily could have scored a hundred. Both UMC and MSU were running the play clock down to the last seconds. Last MSU score was halfway through the 4th.

MSU has two thousand yard rushers back- Gunn has set the career rushing record, Taorima his backup had over a thousand when Nate was injured. Both had three TDs last night but neither hit a hundred yards. The #3 and #4 both had over a hundred. Zylstra made is usual fantastic catches, then all of the subs played. So many short drives due to turnovers. It was ugly and both sides couldn't wait to get done.

Upper Iowa upset UMD in Duluth. The NSIC may just have one playoff team if MSU wins at USF.

They only count D2 games. They also beat Stephen F Austin and NAIA Doane. Right now they are a fraction of a point in front of MSU. Top spot gets a bye, second team has to play. Hopefully this weekend will flip the script in favor of the Mavs. According to their criteria, it should happen. The kid from Fertile has one more year of eligibility but he graduates in May. He doesn't think he'll come back but you never know.

Mavs are a machine. Hopefully they can win a title this year.

Northern State let Dosch go today. With a new stadium in the works, could the Wolves pick an assistant from one of the local FCS schools as their new head coach?

Had a PWO to NDSU but went to Bemidji instead. Got playing time right away after his RS year but he doesn't regret his decision. Steidl, former DT for the Bison is a buddy of his.

20 UMD kids make it. 20 MSU kids make it. Seems like too many. But coaches prefer having too many instead of too few. 16 teams in a conference is too many.

2 8 team conferences would be better but how would they split them up??

You make several great points that we discuss quite often in the NSIC.

First- I'd like to see two non-conference games a year- one home, one away. With seven games in the South, two with the North, you would play all of the opposite teams over a four year period. Gives you a chance for some great matchups and variety.

Second- Splitting a conference would be interesting. Especially with 9 Minnesota schools. Do you split them North/South like now or East/West which is more of a stretch geographically. Bemidji, Crookston, Duluth, Mary, Minot, Moorhead, Northern- who would be the 8th? Upper Iowa and Wayne are kind of outliers. Augie might be leaving- all kinds of questions.

And yes, 20 is too many. Maybe they should have one team from the whole conference instead of splitting it North/South. USF defense got hosed.

Actually I'm going to be watching on computer. I drove a mile to shovel out my Aunt's place. Between the wind, the rain and the ice we decided to stay home. Tried driving on 212- 40 mph tops- still have ice and slush on it.

Hancock is up 14-6 in the 9 man title game against Mountain Lake. Watched a couple of Mav recruits yesterday- tight end from Blooming Prairie and the running back from Wayzeta.

Yes, I'm leaving in about an hour. Noon game. This is actually the rematch from two years ago- MSU did have a lead but the Commerce QB Perez picked them apart with short passes as the Lions went on to win the D2 title. Last year's snow game was against Tarleton, who you may be seeing sometime down the line as they are going FCS independent next year. I see that Dixie State in on the USD & SDSU schedules- they will probably be looking for games too.

Dewey, if you are ever in Mankato- at least drive by the bubble. I was inside yesterday. Place is huge. But the city makes them take is down from like May to November. Silly rules. They will be able to use that for softball tournaments, baseball practice and like yesterday the regional soccer tournament. Six million dollars but it should pay for itself.

I was told that we are going to Slippery Rock next week. Our defense was outstanding today. Gave up a TD that answered our opening drive- then we fumbled a punt into the end zone for their 2nd TD, and they scored with 30 seconds to go for their third. Gunn had over a hundred yards rushing before half. Alex Goettl, who will be going to New York next week as the only D2 player up for the Campbell Award stepped in front of a throwback pass for a pick six.

Windy but not too cold- they said 27 at kickoff. Just got back home from the basketball doubleheader.

Concordia St Paul has to be the most likely, just based on geography right?

Yes, CSP is what is being talked about as moving north.

Both SCSU, who used to be the biggest rival for the Mavs and beat us in Kato in the second round of the playoffs in 2013. Crookston has been terrible, but I'd rather have them move to D3 or NAIA than drop the sport.

An who knows if Augie will be leaving. 13 would really be an odd number.

Geography doesn't really work - but I know of an NAIA here in Iowa that has been rumored to want a D2 move

I know there is a D2 conference around here - the one I talk about with WIU, which is geographically similar to the NSIC but south rather than north - but it is mostly full, especially for a smaller private NAIA move up.

Crookston should have never moved to D2, they should have stayed NAIA with Mayville, Valley City, etc....

….and St Cloud is no real shock either, they are a hockey school and football took away from that IMO.

Too bad on schools dropping football but the NSIC was way too big for 16 teams. No OOC schedule.

Pretty gutless of the AD and administration not informing the team first. Typical of a lot of schools. Another example: Nebraska-Omaha

Hockey is top dog at St Cloud and I bet more $$ will funneled to that program. Women's hockey is a joke when it comes to revenue. I had friends that would take in a UND women's game once in awhile and they maybe would get 200 people and that was with ticket give aways for some games.

You missed the time the SRU QB got his thumb stuck in the face mask of one of our defensive players down by the goal post. Player was saying later that the QB was saying, "Don't move, my thumb is stuck in your mask!" It took a while to get it out of there, they had to take the helmet off first.

Yes, I was hoping that the Mav women's soccer team would have beaten eventual champ Grand Valley- the soccer final four was in Pittsburgh Thursday and Saturday. We drove past the Robert Morris arena on our way to the airport.

Gunn is the career rushing leader. Often sits out the fourth quarter because they don't need him. I doubt if he gets that rest on Saturday. Our third string running back had a 75 yard TD run against SRU.

Hah! That would have been interesting.

The D2 message board was overflowing with posts from the QBs brother. "MSU has never even seen such athletes. MSU has never seen such a quarterback. MSU has never seen such receivers. MSU has not played any good teams." Blah blah blah. And even after the game he couldn't shut up. I felt sorry for his brother the QB to be related to someone like that. Then he said that Zylstra was good, but nowhere near as good at their receiver. Here is his one handed catch.

West Florida just started their program a few years ago, but they are already a power; this is their second D2 championship game appearance in three years. Similar to 2017, they upset their way out of their region and upset an undefeated regional champ in the national semifinals (with this year's win over Ferris State probably being even more impressive than their 2017 win at IUP). The Gulf South Conference, West Florida's conference, is one of the best in Division II. IMO, MSU-Mankato should be favored (West Florida lost twice during the season), but a West Florida win would not be a big surprise.
