Interesting story- thanks for sharing.

I love this historical stuff. Sometimes they have reasons for why they picked the colors that they did- or even that they changed them.

I didn't click the link but for The Citadel the police chief in Charleston was named Paddy Miles. He hired a bunch of The Citadel Men for the Charleston Police Dept and those men were known as "Paddy Miles's Bulldogs". When we began playing sports we became The Citadel Bulldogs.

I've never heard that story - I just assumed it was like most other mascot names- it just got picked

Wofford's mascot apparently arose from its baseball team. There was a local Jack Russell Terrier that would go to games and then chase down opposing runners trying to reach home plate.
Over time, the mascot evolved from a Jack Russell to a Boston Terrier.

Maybe when Mercer has been playing football for a few more years we'll remember what their mascot actually is

Beavers? Bruins? whatever... we're playing that team from Georgia

HA! I had forgotten that one.

Now I will re-tell my favorite Furman Citadel Story. Someone (can't remember his name) used to call me the Sunday before every Furman/Citadel game and call me every purple tinted curse word he could think of (and there were lots of them). I waited until he was done and said "If I ever want to be cursed out by a The Citadel man, I will get in my car, drive to Charleston, check in to the Francis Marion Hotel...............and for get to tip someone":p

"Tough as a bearkat" was apparently a popular expression in Texas in the 1800s.

There are also schools with football related nicknames that no longer sponsor football. Just about every four-year school that admitted men prior to WWII had a football team. You can see some of the football remnants in today's mascots.

St. Mary's Gaels...name given to fb team by a sportswriter
Detroit Mercy Titans...see St. Mary's.
St. Louis Billikens...fb coach resembled a Billiken doll.
Loyola-Chicago Ramblers...fb team traveled a lot.
Wichita Wheat Shockers...fb players had summer jobs cutting and shocking wheat.
