Jermaine Garner, a running back and kick-return specialist, has committed to Jacksonville State. Gardner (6-3, 285) was a left offensive tackle for the Yellow Jackets. He played occasionally on defense.
Plott said Gardner, an All-State performer as a junior, missed six games in his senior season after having his appendix removed.
“He has real good feet as a lineman," Plott said. “He has the size and the ability to move. He’s got good strength. When he’s blocking guys, he can move them out of there. That’s pretty much what attracted the college scouts."
Garner rushed for 1,724 yards and 18 touchdowns. He caught 20 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He scored five times on punt returns, averaging 24.8 yards on 17 attempts.
Garner also played in the defensive backfield.
“We played him out as a receiver sometimes and threw screens to him," Plott said. “With Jermaine you get a lot. He’s a playmaker as a running back or receiver or when he’s returning kicks. He can pretty much do it all."
