View Full Version : Pat Forde on court logos

JMU got a mention, as he attacked many schools for having logos at center court that are way too large. Funny thing is, I never have felt the Duke Dog was way too big, mainly because there's not much in the way of other logos on the court.

I have to say, I've never been a fan of lots of paint and color changes on bball floors. I saw a couple minutes of a game from ATM and I got a headache from their floor. :nonono2:
The new one at JPJ looks awfully sharp blur. Can't wait to get down to see it in person.

Holy hell - what on earth is Southern Ill thinking with that court.  :bawling: Hideous.
Texas A&M and Boise St - Gaaaaaaah. xlolx
Didn't think the JMU court looked that bad.

I tend to agree. JMU's logo is too big. Reminds me of Drake.
UNI on the other hand I think is too small.

Why didn't he mention Texas Tech? That's the worst court in America by far. Looks half bball court half Nascar racacar. They're going to run out of room soon to put corporate sponsors. They've already sold half of their arena to O'Rielly Auto Parts.

Graphic Arts is my professional background and undergraduate field of study, and I disagree with Forde on several points. Balance principles suggest that, when you're branding a space that is 4700 square feet, it's probably OK to use a logo that isn't restricted to a 113 square-foot circle at center court. There are limitations, of course. I'd say JMU is safe, though. SMU and So. Ill. are pretty bad.
I've often picked on my VCU-grad wife because her school's logo is so atrocious. It's so half-assed and two dimensional looking, and the horns are mechanical and unrealistic. It's like the designers got fed up with the development process and said "screw it - use one of those sketches."

Fordham's ram, on the other hand, is one of the better examples of ram graphics in college sports. If anything, it's a bit too symmetrical. But the symmetry makes sense, since it's clearly part of the total logo package. To lump Fordam's logo in with VCU's is careless at best.

You should do your logo assessment thing again. I actually really enjoyed that. xlolx

As I said on the CAA boards, we pretty much have the exact same logo on our football field, but with the 'JMU' underneath in the same font that's on our helments (pretty much like blur2005's avatar pic), and it looks very nice on the new turf. On hardwood, it looks ok, but maybe it could be a bit more dynamic with a bit of shading...but then what do I know.

Well, even trained preference is still preference. Assessment can be pretty subjective, but there's a reason design trends develop the way they do. The best-looking designs incorporate bits of style that evolve as they are recycled over and over, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Hands down, my all-time favorite college logo is this one: :smiley_wi

That goes to show what can happen when the refs don't cheat for Dook and let the game go to OT. *****in' Dook. :nonono2:

Oh, believe me... they tried. Lot's of ghost fouls, every out of bounds went to Dook, more than a couple of travels overlooked...

I loved the sign the UVA fan had that said "SportsCenter is next, unless Duke needs more time"

It's a Northern Iowa logo I did as a joke after calling the NIU several times by accident.

Gizrd, don't you know that the first commandment is thou shall not capitalize dook.:nono: :hurray: Getting back to the thread, Me thinks Pat Forde is a little full of himself and has to much time on his hands or nothing else to write about:twocents:

Yeah, I think all of I-AA football, the state of Iowa, and MVC knows that if you want to irritate a UNI fan, call them NIU.
But that is a good job with the logo. It looks authentic!

Oh, 89, I was most CERTAINLY there. Fricken pandemonium. Singletary gets #1 on Sportscenter's top 10, which was definitely in order after the shot he pulled out of the bag.
That's a great sign! xlolx xlolx xlolx
BTW, there were a bunch of awesome signs, though that was probably the best.
In general that was one of the best games I've ever seen just in terms of a team never giving up. I thought we might be out of it when we got down 59-51, but J.R.'s free throws brought us back. Plus Sean is a machine, hitting the jumper to force OT and then the sick one-handed fade away to win. I was scared ****less though that Paulus was going to hit his shot to win the game. Fortunately, and as we told him when he was at the free throw line, he sucks.
Funny story: when I rushed the court, I was getting around the Duke bench, tripped on the last chair and went stumbling behind the line of ushers protecting the players. I tried to turn and get back to the court, but that would've brought me into the players. I'm pretty sure they were about to tackle me, thinking I was going for the Duke players. But I eventually got on the court. What a great game.

I almost gave up on them twice. Too many stupid shots and behind the back passes. BUT, they kept coming back.

What's up with Boise State and all the schools in Idaho. should we say yikes!!!. at least as Boise's court is not blue.. Aesthetics must not be important in the "I'da -ho" state

You did see Napoleon Dynamite xlolx If the movie represented Idaho then I would say they are currently living in about the year 1986 which might explain things. :eyebrow:
