Wearing #79 and standing seven feet, nine inches, i s the latest import from China, Sun Ming Ming, who will play for the ABA's Maryland Nighthawks. That's one tall basketball player!

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — The "have size, will travel" basketball odyssey that's taken 7-foot-9, 370-pound Sun Ming Ming from China to California to Kansas to North Carolina made its latest stop today in the back room of a Chinese restaurant in this tony Washington, D.C., suburb.

That's where the Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Association introduced their newest player, a man they're touting as the tallest in the history of professional basketball.

Sun donned a uniform with the number 79 — Get it? — and his new team's owner and coach and a teammate all gushed about his "basketball IQ" and "soft hands."

Only reason I know is because my future mother-in-law uses it and she took care of the TT and soon to be fiancee last week!

BTW, I have never in my life heard of the Maryland Nighthawks and they apparently play at a college that's 5 miles from my house. I may just have to go to the game Saturday night and check it out.

Hell, just looked at their roster and they even have a former Blue Hen (Andrew Washington) who is averaging 20 points a game! I've definitely got to go now, even if he did have to leave the Hens because of academics.

Just a follow up. I did not make it to either game that Ming-Ming has played, but both were sell-outs (1800) and in his debut he had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocked shots in 20:46 of play. Not bad for a guy who struggles to move.
