I watched both of these Cotton Bowls back when Jan. 1 was the most important day in college football. Parseghian & Royal reminisce about the back to back games.

Modern day yes- all time would be Knute Rockne. I read the book Shake Down the Thunder by Murray A. Sperber. Excellent read about the early days and the man, the myth and the legend.

I always think of George O'Leary, the only unbeaten Notre Dame head coach.

My favorite ones were Joe Kuharich and Gerry Faust.

I think every family in the Midwest has an "uncle/great-uncle/cousin was recruited by Ara Parseghian to play at Notre Dame, but..." story. My Mom did, and we weren't even Catholic.

(Side note: I'm a millennial and I grew up in the Davie/Willingham/Weis years for Notre Dame. To me, they're an overhyped BYU.)

I think Ara, to date, was the only non-Catholic to coach football at ND. He was Presbyterian. Ara, Bo, Woody...man the midwest put out some good coaches. RIP!
