Nice to read that more schools are adding than dropping the sport.

There are 97 D1 schools that don't play football. If I could pick one to start up football, it would be the Vermont Catamounts. I liked the old Yankee Conference when I was growing up.

And it's still interesting that it's the smaller colleges that do add football and make them here to stay... xnodx

Games of violence are probably illegal in the people's republic of sanders

Good news, particularly in the middle of the seemingly 24-7 news cycle about CTE.

Interesting that the two states with no DI football (FBS or FCS) are Alaska and Vermont. Makes sense for the Catamounts to start up. Then need Anchorage to do the same.

I doubt the will exists up there to make it happen. Challenges abound:

1) where do they get cash for an indoor stadium/practice facility?
2) can they afford the travel for their team + possible subsidies given to other conference members?
3) where are they concerning title IX?
4) why should the Anchorage campus get the team when the flagship is in Fairbanks?
5) what is the long-term athletic budget outlook with football?

I'd love to see it, though. I have family ties to Alaska, and at one point as a teenager I thought my family would be moving there. Had events unfolded differently I may be a UAA grad today.

They had a real scare this last year- talking about eliminating sports teams, even hockey. Football won't be coming anytime soon, they are worried about both schools programs surviving. Maybe if they have another oil boom.

I was at UAA back in 1994 for the Great Alaskan Shootout which the Gophers managed to win. Had a great time- people were extremely friendly. Days sure were short and it was only Thanksgiving.
