Hardin: A&T football holds season's 1st practice
GREENSBORO — Footballs were flying around outside Aggie Stadium on a hot August afternoon. Coaches were screaming and players were sweating and Rod Broadway was smiling.
The old coach from Oakboro is in his element. He has his program where he wants it, and he’s not changing a thing.
“What’s the old saying?,” he asked, joking in front of the cameras. “We do chicken.”
That’s all.
No frills or fritters. A&T lost its best player but not its identity. This is a reloading season for the Aggies, and Broadway and his quarterback are looking to December.
“We’re going to be a good football team,” he said Tuesday, minutes before the first practice of the season, which starts in 28 days.
You don’t often hear coaches talk like that in August, but Broadway has seen times when he didn’t know if he was going to have a good football team or not, especially a month before playing the first game.
But the seventh-year head coach at North Carolina A&T has a simple reason for optimism.
“We have good players,” he said. “We have no excuses.”
Never one to duck from a challenge, he’s already lobbed one over his team’s head. Be good or else.
His quarterback is way ahead of him.
“We’re going to be great,” Lamar Raynard said.

Here's a look at Mercer's always way-too-short & way-too-small O-Line on the 1st day of camp. I'm sure they won't be able to block anyone again this year & the Bears will continue to be at the bottom of the SoCon in all Offensive statistics; just as they have been for the past 3 years.

Southeastern Louisiana camp progressing well ... extremely impressed with the size, physicality and depth of the O-line, as well as running back stable ... really good battle going at on QB between Donovan Isom and South Carolina transfer, Lorenzo Nunez ... offense overall is loaded and looks to be back to 2013-2014 territory. Defense has been solid but tough to get a true read going against our offense. Special teams return intact and have been solid.

Outside of the incoming freshman, i was not overly impressed by the Bearkat's first scrimmage. None of the playmakers on offense played. The backups showed some good execution. But overall seemed less intense and competitive than i expected.

I'm sure Keeler wants to get his known commodities to the starting line in one piece. I'm sure it's that way most places.

No doubt and i get it. I was mainly concerned that will a lot of two deep spots in open competition, i expected a bit more "Hair on fire" but didn't really see it. Again, it had been on the heels of s really hard rain so maybe everyone was just trying to Stay Vertical and avoid injury?

Just looking at the thread title.....do we still call it "camp" when there are no two a days? Seriously, "Football Camp" use to mean going away to a literal camp (ala Junction Boys or Bell Buckle) with bunkhouses so all you could do was spend a week or two focusing on nothing but football and suiting up 2 or 3 times a day.....now they just show up a few days before school and run through a few regular practice days.

The term "camp" has evolved over the years, but it generally refers to the period of practice prior to game planning weeks. Once you begin preparation and focus for game one opponent, and reps for kids not in the two-deep become limited, you're no longer in "camp" mode.
